A major new research project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will use the St Luke’s Hospital
Following the path of the Guildford Poor Law Infirmary through its many transitions, this fascinating story will be told through the testimonies of the inspectors, guardians and inmates of the workhouse, right up to the recollections of people who worked, trained or were treated at St Luke’s until its closure in 1996.

A party of orphan girls sent by Mr Middlemore's Home in Birmingham to Canada in 1879. In 1883 Mr Middlemore began to take children from Guildford Union Workhouse to become British Home Children in Canada.

Percy Dewberry and Harry Longhurst were sent by the Guildford Board of Guardians to the sail training ship Exmouth in 1913 when they were 13. Percy committed su***de in 1921 when he was unemployed. Harry died on board ship during the second world war.
