NT River Wey Navigations and Shalford Mill

NT River Wey Navigations and Shalford Mill A really unusual National Trust place in Surrey - 20 miles of river navigation, running from Godalming to Weybridge. Visit Dapdune Wharf in Guildford.

National Trust is a charity with a love for preserving historic places and spaces across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

River Wey Navigations is a 20 mile mix of river and canal, created in 1650 to serve the agricultural and industrial are of west Surrey and provide an easy means of transporting goods to the London markets. It remained a commercially viable transport system until the 1960s when it was donated to the Trust. There is a visitor centre at Dapdune Wharf, open Thursday to Monday and a full events programme. Shalford Mill a wonderful hidden gem, in the quiet backwater of Shalford sitting across the Tillingbourne stream. The building has remained almost unaltered since ceasing operations in 1914. Although the water wheel no longer functions, you can trace the journey of grain around the mill until it was bagged up and carted off to the bakers. There are regular guided tours of this well preserved early 18th century water mill as well as many fun events for children. Open on Wed/Sun

Operating as usual

Many will remember the sweltering weather we had in the summer and the resulting fires, such as the one near Coxes Mill Pond. A couple of volunteers and I visited the same spot last week in almost the opposite weather to plant some tree saplings into the spots that were scorched. Chilly work but it will be exciting to monitor their progress as they grow to fill area. Steve - New Haw Lengthsman

What is the current state of play with Shalford Mill? Is there a schedule of conservation work leading to it being re-opened to the public?

Can anyone on here help please. I am bringing my Sheerline 950 cruiser up the Wey this summer to Guildford - is there anywhere a list / map of bridges with bridge heights? I have 7.0 foot air draft with windscreen down and would like to get my windscreen down in good time for each low bridge!
It's World Book Day today and to keep the celebrations going, our friends at NT River Wey Navigations and Shalford Mill are holding a special family book event this weekend at Dapdune Wharf. How can we find out if there's been a sewage leak or dump (excuse the pun) please?

‘Rain threatening, Triggs Lock’. Nice to be back painting on the Wey, lots of atmosphere on an overcast day which eventually turned to rain..
Today, a little late and somewhat unplanned, I joined the team of folk helping clear out the invasive floating pennywort from a section of the River Wey below Papercourt Lock. Whilst hard work, it was also good fun, and great to see folk from all types of river users working so well together. Despite a big turn out, maybe 40+ folk, we could only clear part of the intended section, so more such events will probably be needed to clear the rest.

Volunteers were coordinated by British Canoeing and the Angling Trust, as well as support from the National Trust and a representative of the EA. A real team effort.

Floating Pennywort is a rapidly growing raft-type plant that can quickly block waterways, and spread from the smallest escaped fragments. As such, as water users, we should be vigilant in checking & cleaning our craft and equipment after use.

As a regular River Wey user, I'd be happy to coordinate sightings of Pennywort on the Navigation and especially the backwaters, and report them back to the team. At the moment, the sections between Papercourt and Walsham weir are bad, with more downstream around Byfleet and up the Basingstoke Canal. If folk find it on the backwaters (Triggs Loop, Bowers Loop, Gresham Loop etc) it would be useful to know. I have plotted some patches up the Broadmead Cut and have arranged to share with Ben at BC.

Some photos of the day attached. Anyone is welcome to share these if it helps promote such clearances and educate folk on invasive species.

Good job everyone!
