SPOT THE DIVER - The Diving Museum

SPOT THE DIVER

Those carefree summer days when we could all head to the seaside without a care in the world about maintaining a wide berth from our fellow holiday-makers are becoming rare and precious memories.

One of our members, Alex Double, has taken a photograph of just such a day – packed with colour, fun and lots and LOTS of people!

There is so much to see in his photo that we thought we'd give you a chance to see how good you are at spotting some of the things.

For a start, can you find the scuba diver?

Can you also find:
3 red and white sun umbrellas
An empty rainbow lilo
Someone making a splash
A man in an orange/red hat

You will have to zoom in to find some of them.
If this picture is too small try here

A NEW HOTEL OPENS AFTER LOCKDOWN

Another triumphant achievement during lockdown by our volunteer 'Master Gardener', Michael Barker. As if tending the gardens he created at our ARP bunker store in Alverstoke was not challenging enough, he has now created a magnificent wildlife haven - just in time for the easing of lockdown restrictions.

A NEW PLATFORM FOR 'OUR JIM'.

During lockdown a few of us have continued to carry out essential work in the museum, making sure that we have followed safety guidance at all times, of course.

Meanwhile, one of our volunteers has also been using his time in self-isolation very profitably. He has constructed a new website dedicated to one of our exhibits, JIM. Congratulations to Richard Castle on a fine achievement.

Subsea to Summit - Snowdon Challenge - The Historical Diving Society

THE GREAT SNOWDON CHARITY CHALLENGE 2020

Last year members of our Working Equipment Group (of The Historical Diving Society) successfully climbed Ben Nevis in full standard diving dress (which weighs 80kg). They started with a dive in Loch Linnhe at the foot of the mountain and two days later they reached the summit on a gloriously clear blue sky day. This was our first 'Subsea to Summit' challenge for charity.

This year we are repeating the exercise on Mount Snowdon.
Full details are on the HDS website: https://www.thehds.com/event/subsea-to-summit-snowdon-challenge/

We are raising funds for 4 charities.

If you are planning a visit to Wales in August, please come to Snowdon to see us. We would welcome your support.

If you can't make it, you can always support us by making a donation at our 'Go Fund Me' account.
tps://www.gofundme.com/f/snowdon-subsea-to-summit

Everyone involved in the event is taking not a single penny from the donations.

We have just put our very first steps on the climb up the funding ladder. Anything you can do to support the divers who will be undertaking this charity challenge would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you!

AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR THE MUSEUM

Last year, the Diving Museum was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the Co-op's charities as part of their 'local good causes' sponsorship scheme.

Our 12-months are up and we were invited to attend a presentation ceremony at the Co-op to receive a cheque. To our astonishment, we were presented with a cheque for more than £2,000! What a terrific surprise. We are over the moon.

We would like to thank the Co-op for selecting us as one of their chosen charities and also all the Co-op customers who generously supported us.

THANK YOU!

DEATH ON THE LINE

Or 'How to murder a mystery play and live to laugh another day'.

Thanks to Margaret our amazingly talented volunteer, actress, writer, producer, videographer, animator, and her 'tecchie' husband, Martin, 'Death On The Line' (our murder mystery play for 2019) was another outstanding success and played to packed houses at every performance.

We can't thank them enough - or all the cast for their enthusiastic co-operation.

Read all about it on our website: https://www.divingmuseum.co.uk/blog-page/

Will there be another murder next year?

MANNEQUIN MAGIC

Mannequin man visited us again this year. So that we don't give the game away we don't give advance warning that he is going to be at the museum.

I'm afraid we are a little cunning in luring people into his reach and this year we did not hold back when the Mayor visited us on a Heritage Open Day (sorry, Mayor. I hope you have recovered!)

Then on Sunday we attended the Heritage Open Days in Winchester in the Great Hall. Over 1400 people came into the hall over the weekend and Mannequin Man managed to surprise most of them much to our delight.

Mannequin Man is a living mannequin with an extraordinary portfolio and has had several appearances at the Diving Museum. Hire him for your next event. He is terrific!

Exploring the Hidden Face of our Deep Ocean Planet - The Diving Museum

HOLIDAY TIME

It is that time of year again when our thoughts turn to holidays. Where can we go this year?

Well how about finding out about somewhere that is completely off the tourist trail. In fact, somewhere most of us will never ever visit in our lifetimes.

On 13th July, Jon Copley, Britain's first bathynaut who went under the Altantic ice for Blue Planet II is giving a talk in the museum about this 'extraordinary and exclusive holiday destination'. The ocean floor.

Without even getting wet we will be able to journey to the bottom of the ocean with Jon Copley and discover the extraordinary creatures that live there.

Jon is a marine biologist specialising in the creatures and habitats that most of us can only imagine. He is also an educator and an award-winning speaker.

This could be the most unusual destination you ever explore.
You can even take home his latest book as your 'destination' souvenir.

Come and join us at 7pm for a few refreshments before starting your journey to the ocean floor at 7.30pm.
We look forward to seeing you!

Journey to another world with Dr Jon Copley — Britain's first 'bathynaut' and a pioneering marine biologist. An award-winning communicator, Jon Copley's talk will introduce you to the extraordinary environments and creatures that exist on the hidden face of our deep ocean planet.

NATIONAL WHALE AND DOLPHIN WATCH, 27th JULY to 4th AUGUST

Sea Watch Foundation are looking for as many eyes on the sea as possible during 27th July to 4th August in their survey to get a snapshot of the number of whales, dolphins and porpoises in British waters in order to improve their conversation and protection work with these creatures.

The data collected will be added to a 17-year data set that Sea Watch Foundation have already created.

If you are interested in participating or organising a watch, get in touch with them to get an observation pack. Then find a nice comfortable place where you can look out over the sea on any day during the 9-day period of the Watch. Make an event of it. Gather your friends and family and make it a fun day out.

For more information, visit www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk (details of organised watches will soon be uploaded to their site).

FATHERS DAY AT HMS SULTAN

Every year HMS Sultan holds a charity show with fun fair, steam vehicles, motorcycle shows, military bands and exercises, stalls and attractions of every kind and this year they had a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) tent where the Historical Diving Society and Diving Museum had a stand.

Peter and Cheryl Wingett came to help us and brought their diving helmets to put on display – a Siebe 12-bolt, Heinke 3-bolt and Miller Dunn.

It was a changeable blustery day but that did not deter the families from coming to explore the fair and enjoy the day.

From kids to grandparents they all had an opportunity to try on a diving helmet - the real thing for adults and our lightweight fibreglass one for the little ones. Our Cartesian diver jellyfish was also popular with old and young alike.
A thoroughly enjoyable weekend and our thanks go to all our volunteers who helped and to HMS Sultan for putting on such an amazing show.

A FAIREY AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SOLENT

Visitors to the museum may have noticed some diving activity in the Solent.

As part of the National Grid survey of the seabed between France and England their engineers came across the wreckage of a 1943 Fairey Barracuda Torpedo Bomber in shallow water just off the southern end of the Daedalus airfield, Lee on the Solent. The 3-seater plane is believed to have crashed shortly after taking off on its test flight; it crashed in shallow water just 500m from the shore. The pilot successfully evacuated.

Archaeologists and divers have been carefully removing the wreckage from the mud; it will be sent to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton for restoration. It will be the only complete example of a Fairey Barracuda in the world.

Divers from James Fisher Marine Services who are salvaging the aircraft came in to visit us in the museum. In the photo they are from left to right: Alan Day, Simon Cunningham and Pat Duggan (photo courtesy of our volunteer Martin Marks).

Photos of the salvage are supplied by the National Grid. For more information about the project, contact the National Grid Press Office 01926 653962.

Did you know that the The Diving Museum in #Gosport is the only #museum of it's kind in the UK? Located in a Victorian military battery, the museum displays one of the best collections of diving equipment in Europe and has a fascinating selection of exhibits that will entertain, inform and educate the whole family. New for 2021, you'll be able to see a 3.3metre long model of the HMS Edinburgh that was badly damaged carrying 'Stalin’s Gold' in WW2 and scuttled by the Royal Navy. An extraordinary diving salvage mission was carried out in 1981 that recovered much of the gold which featured as part of a BBC TV special. You will also be able to see other artefacts from the ship such as the only surviving bullion box, shell cases and a replica lead gold bar cast from one of the salvaged bars showing the Russian identification marks. https://www.excursionsshow.com/exhibitor-profile-forms-2020-1/gosport-tourism 📸Kevin Casey from the Diving Museum Gosport Tourist Information Centre Discover Gosport #Excursions21 #tourism
Hope everyone is coping well in these surreal times. Just thought some of you would like to know that I have just put this artefact on EBay. I recovered it from the Carn Brea Castle shipwreck (1829) some time ago, which many of you will know was a very significant wreck in that it was the first commercial helmet salvage task on a shipwreck undertaken by the Deane brothers with their new patented helmet ...(see John Bevan's books for the story). As per normal, I declared any items from the wreck through the official Receiver of Wreck. The connection with the Deane brothers makes this an interesting collectors' item. I have only made three of these, one of which is still with me, another in the Bevan household, and the third now on Ebay in case anyone is interested. Ebay Item number: 284034449441 listed until Sunday 11th Oct
