Pollok House

Pollok House A grand country house near Glasgow city centre, Pollok House is Scotland’s answer to Downton Abbey and gives a real taste of upstairs/downstairs life in the 1930s.
(116)

Above stairs, the lavish family rooms are packed full of period furniture and furnishings, as well as the UK’s finest collection of Spanish art, including paintings by El Greco, Goya and Murillo. Below stairs the vast servants’ quarters show the realities of running a country house. Set in the scenic surroundings of Pollok Country Park, Pollok House is an enjoyable, educational and entertaining day out for all the family.

Pollok House may be closed but we are continuing to share stories about things we can all look forward to seeing again when it re-opens😊

The photo shows our beautiful entrance hall. The two busts flanking the doorway date to the mid-1800's. They depict Sir John Stirling Maxwell’s parents, Sir William Stirling Maxwell, 9th Bart. (1818-1878) and his wife Lady Anna Maria Stirling Maxwell (1826-1874).

Sir William Stirling Maxwell made an amazing contribution to the study of the history of art, and acquired a great deal of our outstanding collection of Spanish art. His “Annals of the Artists of Spain” (printed over four volumes in 1848) were the first books on Spanish art in English, and also the first books on the history of art to contain photographic illustrations. His work greatly improved our understanding and appreciation of Spanish art in Britain.

Eagle-eyed visitors might spot a set of these books in our amazing Library.

He wrote many other volumes and among his many other accolades was a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, served as an MP, and was Rector of both the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh.

Lady Anna Maria Stirling Maxwell (nee Leslie-Melville) was the second daughter of David Leslie-Melville, 8th Earl Of Leven. She married Sir William unusually late in life by Victorian standards, aged 39, in 1865. John Stirling Maxwell was born in June 1866, and his brother Archibald followed September 1867.

As we’re sure you know by now, it’s International Women’s Day this coming Sunday, and we’re celebrating with a day of talks, tours and an interactive workshop!
At 11.30am you can catch ‘Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch to Live’ – a fascinating talk on Scotland’s infamous witch trials!
Pollok House has it’s very own connection to witch trials - a group of people accused of using witchcraft against our own Sir George Maxwell lived in nearby Polloktoun and were later executed in Paisley. Find out more about these persecuted peoples at this brilliant talk on Sunday 8th of March. Follow the link below to our website for more information on ticket prices, times and more.

Firstly, we would like to wish all of our visitors, members and followers a very Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing all of you in 2020! 🎊

If you have travelled to Pollok House lately you may have noticed a lot of groundwork going on around the park. These works are part of the larger plan for the re-opening of the Burrell Collection in Spring 2021. 🌻

If you plan on visiting us over the next few weeks, it’s important that you are aware there is a closure to the Main Entrance (Pollokshaws Road) from the 13th of January for 10 weeks. Alternative routes will be sign posted for visitors to use in the meantime. *pedestrians will still be able to access the house from all entrances*

A photo I took of Pollok House recently. I'm a photographer based in Glasgow Southside and take photos of our local area and around Glasgow which I post at my page here: Photos by Daniel Jones
Spot the maze baby...!
Poor value for money I ordered the in-house ham sandwich. It consisted of a pretty ordinary unbuttered ciabatta roll, containing barely a slice of nice ham, the thinnest slice of tomato possible without using a razor blade, a few limp leaves of rocket and a smear of piccalilli all costing £7.50! Are you kidding NTS? The constituent parts barely add up to £1. As an organisation I know you are always looking for donations, but when did you turn to daylight robbery? The coffee was pleasant enough, but had a sprinkling of sugar on top...which I didn't ask for. Future customers beware https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186534-d5575115-r681886460-The_Edwardian_Kitchen_Restaurant_Pollok_House-Glasgow_Scotland.html# 😞
Hi I attended the Easter egg hunt over the weekend and my daughter had her photo taken by the photographer from Pearl and Plum have they advised you of any issues about viewing the photos on their page?
I was at pollok house yesterday with my friend and he was talking to a guide about the Castle of Mey we enjoyed the Harry Benson exhibition and the story of the house and then a nice lunch in the Edwardian Kitchen.
