⚔️ FREE SATURDAY EVENT IN GLASGOW! ⚔️

This Saturday, to celebrate the success of Govan Old's 'Stones 'n' Bones' community dig, the Govan Stones is honoured to host a visit from the brilliant living history society, CUMBRALAND!

Cumbraland's historical demonstrations transport you to the early medieval Kingdom of Strathclyde, featuring beautifully hand-crafted reproduction artefacts such as weapons, clothing, jewellery and tools to give us a glimpse at everyday life BEFORE Scotland.

Come along and see the archaeological dig up close then try your hand at some historic 'have a go' activities, including; spinning wool, nalebinding (like Viking knitting, but easier!), early medieval board games, weapons handling, and laying out a viking burial for a funeral! ⚔️

All activities are FREE! Drop in any time Saturday 30th, 11am - 4pm. See you there!

📢🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Could you help us to save a little bit of Scotland's heritage and keep the Govan Stones in Glasgow for the next 1000 years? 📢🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The Govan Stones need your help - urgently. We are trying to raise the match funding required to get the first phase of the ambitious Govan Stones Redevelopment Project underway. The completion of the first phase of works will provide the Govan Stones with their first real income and help keep the museum open. Could you spare a few pounds or even help us promote the appeal by sharing this post?

ATOMIC WINNER!
A GOVAN FERRY supporter has won coveted tickets to see legendary rockers, Blondie, at the group’s Glasgow Hydro concert in November. The lucky winner is Laura from Queen’s Park. Laura was one of this year’s Crowdfunder backers who together contributed £1,275 to the ferry operation. The Blondie tickets were one of this year’s star prizes and Laura tells us she’s delighted to be going along. The summer ferry cost us around £42,000 to run and wouldn’t have been possible without support from people like Laura. Between the Crowdfunder campaign and onboard donations we raised £6,871.

Of course, the ferry wouldn’t have been possible without the support of lots of backers. We’re especially grateful to the BIG SIX anchor funders who’ve supported us now for the third year running, contributing more than £31,000 this year : Glasgow Life/ Riverside Museum; Glasgow Harbour/Peel; Glasgow City Council/DRS/CGAP; Glasgow City Heritage Trust; Glasgow Housing Association and the City’s Area Partnerships.

FULL LIST OF FERRY INCOME
Glasgow Life/Riverside Museum £ 7,000
Glasgow Harbour/Peel £ 5,000

A 3D Hogback for you to peruse. An amazing example of recent archaeological research into the Govan Stones by University of Glasgow 's Megan Kasten. The Hogback model is made using Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry, which consists of taking numerous, overlapping photographs from different positions around an object to build a 3D model. The software finds points in common between the photographs and can calculate distance and depth from the photographs. From these measurements, a 3D model can be created.

Could you carry a 2 tonne hogback gravestone out the back of a van? These guys from Glasgow Museums must be really strong, or are they? Brownie points for the best guess as to what is actually happening.
