I wonder if the unnamed German conservator was Helmut Ruhemann (later to become head of the painting conservation department of the National Gallery, London) who also worked at Kelvingrove under Harry McLean. As a modern day conservator I wouldn't be 'horrified' at his methods as he obviously did his best with his skills and knowledge that he had and worked with and what he had available to him in wartime Scotland, no doubt with the best of integrity as well. The materials used were standard materials at the time. This of course could be a journalistic quote taken a little out of context. A nice wee story to share though.
