Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre

Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre Hundreds of carved figures and pieces of old scrap perform an incredible choreography to haunting music and synchronised light, telling the funny and tragic stories of the human spirit as it struggles against the relentless circles of life and death.

SHARMANKA (Russian for Barrel-Organ) was founded by sculptor-mechanic Eduard Bersudsky and theatre director Tatyana Jakovskaya in St.Petersburg (Russia) in 1989. Audiences in many countries have been fascinated by its magic, and based in Glasgow since 1996 it has gained a reputation as one of the city’s hidden treasures.

ORIGINS OF SHARMANKA/ ПРОИСХОЖДЕНИЕ "ШАРМАНКИ"

This autumn is full of memories - 10 years ago we moved to Trongate 103 Arts and Creativity centre, 20 years ago we were building The Millennium Clock for the National Museum of Scotland. And 30 years ago we were building the first Sharmanka - in St.Petersburg, Russia (then Leningrad, USSR). The story of the artist behind it, Eduard Bersudsky, his family and friends -as well as people whelped to build this unique theatre is told in the film "Origins of Sharmanka" (in Russian with English subtitles)https://vimeo.com/260760513

For the last 20 years our Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre has been working in Glasgow, Scotland. But it was founded in St Petersburg, Russia, where both of us -…

Происхождение "Шарманки" / ORIGINS OF SHARMANKA

That might be interesting for those who already visited Sharmanka performances.
National Science Museum in South Korea, where our two touring sets - "Gothic Kinetic" and "Merry-go-World" - start performing on 11 July, asked us to make a 25min version of the film about early years of Sharmanka to be shown at exhibition and include in it few sentences about what happened after we left Russian. The result is Eduard's monologue about his life before Sharmanka was opened in St.Petersburg (then Leningrad) in 1989.

Russian with English subtitles.

Sharmanka Kinetic Theatreis celebrating its 20th birthday this summer with a series of new creations and tours as far afield as China.

This summer ten large kinemats have been sent from Sharmanka to the Guangdong Science Centre in Guangzhou, the biggest venue of its kind in China, where they will be exhibited for four months from 16 July to 16 November. The exhibition, entitled Mechanical Toys, is shared with England’s Cabaret Mechanical Theatre.

Meanwhile in Glasgow, a brand new set of mechanical sculptures has been installed at the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. Merry-Go-World, a set of ten sculptures with a soundtrack including music by the award-winning composer Brian Irvine – add to the famously extraordinary theatre/gallery. Atmospheric and darkly humorous, the new machines are intriguing, captivating and unlike any previous work seen at the gallery. They premiered in Inverness and Thurso over the winter and were supported by a Creative Scotland grant.

Later in the year, a new exhibition of Sharmanka kinemats will open at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, Ayrshire. Its central piece will be a kinemat directly inspired by Burns, where characters from his narrative poem Tam O’Shanter come to life led by a witch dancing with Tam’s grey mare’s tail. The exhibition will open on 14 October and will run for four months.

Sharmanka is currently working on a new kinetic sculpture commissioned by An Lanntair, the arts centre in Stornoway in the Western Isles, for the Festival of Harris Tweed. Am Beairt/The Loom is a transformation from an old Hattersley weaving loom found on Lewis into one of Bersudsky’s madcap, mechanical inventions. When complete, the resulting work give regular performances at An Lanntair from 1 October until 13 November.
