The Museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays (10.00am to 4.00pm, last admission 3.00pm) until the end of October 2026. The museum opens each Saturday and Sunday between April and October from 10.00am to 4.00pm (with last admission at 3.00pm.

It is always heartwarming when visitors to the Airfield Museum make positive comments about their experiences with us.
It is equally gratifying when we receive positive feedback from external bodies and officials in recognition of our efforts to preserve the history of RAF Wethersfield. The letter pictured below from the Ambassador of The United States of America London dated 24th June 2019, sent to Museum Curator Ross Stewart is especially cherished by the team.
Sadly in June 2022 we were forced to vacate our building on base and this was followed by being homeless for two years. Fortunately we found accommodation in Finchingfield but this has limitations for display space, parking and visitor facilities. After this dispaly season ends in October we will need to consider our ongoing viability.

Throughout the life of RAF Wethersfield, rumours of the base closing appeared at regular intervals up until 1990, when it did close. Shortly,
Bearing in mind the 20th Fighter Bomber Wing arrived at RAF Wethersfield in 1952, i was somewhat shocked to find this 24th June 1955 article in the Halstead Gazette regarding resurfacing and future extension of the runway. So, i found it a bit of a surprise that the story should include a denial to a rumour that the base would close.

The article below was published in the Halstead Gazette on 23rd June 1967 and relates to the arrival at RAF Wethersfield of Royal Canadian Air Force CF-104 Starfighters from 427 Squadron.
At the time, 427 Squadron were based at Zwiebrucken in Germany. 427 Squadron would make further exchange visits to RAF Wethersfield between the 14th and 20th September 1967 and then from the 27th May to the 11th June 1968.
Norwegian Air Force F-104s from 331 SKV also came to Wethersfield from 24th November to 4th December 1967

Airfield Museum member Brian Render has found another RAF Wethersfield related news item in the archives of the Braintree & Witham Times.
This one was published on the 23rd June 1956 and is entiled 'Land Shortage Stops USAF Homes Plan'. It would not be until 1959 that construction of family housing and purpose built barrack blocks would commence at RAF Wethersfield.

This one was published on the 23rd June 1955 and concerns travel to a prospective wedding to an RAF Wethersfield US serviceman, which ended up being deferred until December 1956.

On the 22nd June 1944, 40 A20 Havocs of the RAF Wethersfield based 416th Bomb Group, attacked a strong point at Cherbourg, France. Dropping bombs from 11,500-12,000 feet the group had mixed results.
Two aircraft were lost due to crashing in allied territory and 11 sustained flak damage. Here are 2 pictures from the raid, one a Google Earth overlay of the target area.

On the 21st June 1944 the RAF Wethersfield based 416th Bomb Group attacked a V-1 Rocket site at Middel Straete in France.
This particular mission was a first for the Group. A total of 31 A-20 Havocs was led by two Martin B-26 Marauders acting as 'Pathfinders'. Despite thick cloud cover, the mission was a complete success with the target destroyed, no flak or enemy fighters encountered and all aircraft safely returning to Wethersfield.
