Wethersfield Airfield Museum Preserving the history of RAF Wethersfield (1944-1990). ONLY OPEN ON SATURDAYS DURING AUGUST

The Museum is currently open each Saturday (10.00am to 4.00pm, last admission 3.00pm) until the end of October 2026. The museum opens each Saturday and Sunday between April and October from 10.00am to 4.00pm (with last admission at 3.00pm.

Here we have a pic of an RAF Wethersfield based F-100D Super Sabre (55-3664) from the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing courtesy of Dave Kelly.

Like many F-100s the aircraft would subsequently go in to storage at MASDC in 1977 before conversion to a drone (No. 110). It was 'written-off' on the 7th August 1989.

Airfield Museum member Brian Render has uncovered an interesting article that appeared in the Halstead Gazette on the 29th August 1960.
The article relates to the renovation of the tower at Coggeshal Church and the assistance provided by RAF Wethersfield to enable church bells to be re-hung thanks to a crane supplied by the base.

Airfield Museum member Brian Render has uncovered a few more RAF Wethersfield related stories from the archives of the Braintree & Witham Times.
First up we have a wedding picture featuring Ellen Daly of Black Notley who married Sgt. Joe Shideler at Braintree Catholic Church. The picture was published on the 29th August 1969.

Airfield Museum member Brian Render has found an unusual RAF Wethersfield related article in the archives of the Halstead Gazette.
This one was published on the 29th August 1958 and concerns a clay pigeon shoot involving the Halstead & District Gun Club and members of the RAFW 'Rod & Gun Club'.

This RAF Wethersfield related article appeared in the Halstead Gazette on the 29th August 1969.
The article, referred to the story being in the base newspaper 'Wingman' contained some useful motoring advice to US personnel from the base Commander Col. Joseph Hagemann.

At just before 6.00pm on 28th August 1944, 38 A-20 Havocs from the RAF Wethersfield based 416th Bomb Group took off for their 133rd mission since arriving at the base.
The target was a fuel dump at Doullens, some 60 miles North of Paris. From a height of 12,000 feet, a total of 208 x 500lb bombs were dropped scoring excellent results and destroying rail lines in the process. Little flak was encountered and all aircraft returned safely to Wethersfield.

AIRFIELD MUSEUM OPENING ON SATURDAY 29tTH AUGUST

Curator Ross and the team are looking forward to welcoming visitors old and new to the Airfield Museum on Saturday 29th August from 10.00am to 4.00pm (last admission at 3.00pm). Why not have a run out and pay us a visit?
We are located in the beautiful village of Finchingfield on the first floor in Unit 2, next to the bridge. We have disabled access following the installation of a stairlift. Sadly, we do NOT have toilet or refreshment facilities. Public toilets are located near the Village Hall. The village has two tea rooms and three pubs to choose from for refreshments.
Join us on Saturday and learn about the rich and diverse history of RAF Wethersfield. You will not be disappointed.
Admission is FREE. Donations welcomed

On 27th August 1944, 39 A-20 Havocs of the RAF Wethersfield based 416th Bomb Group attacked a Ferrying Area at Rouen in France.
Large concentrations of German tanks, vehicles and troops were attempting to cross the River Seine in boats. Cloud haze and smoke obscured the target meaning two of the six flights were unable to drop their bombs.
Using fragmentation bombs, the remaining four flights unleashed their cargoes. The 416th were one of seven Ninth Bomber Command Groups to attack the target which destroyed hundreds of vehicles.

Prior to the closure, of the old Airfield Museum in 2022, visitors usually completed a tour of the base by going in and experiencing the serenity of the base Chapel.
Here is an article that appeared in the Halstead Gazette on 27th August 1954 regarding the history of the Chapel bell. I have to say that until this article was uncovered, museum volunteers were unaware of the bell's Essex heritage.

The Super Sabre featured is 56-2963 from the 55th TFS. The 'Hun' would subsequently crash at Grissom AFB on the 26th August 1971.
