Wethersfield Airfield Museum Preserving the history of RAF Wethersfield (1944-1990). OPEN ON SATURDAYS DURING OCTOBER PLUS SUNDAY THE 18TH

The Museum is currently open each Saturday (10.00am to 4.00pm, last admission 3.00pm) until the end of October 2026. The museum opens each Saturday and Sunday between April and October from 10.00am to 4.00pm (with last admission at 3.00pm.

EXTRA OPENING OF MUSEUM THIS WEEKEND
AIRFIELD MUSEUM OPENING ON BOTH SATURDAY 17TH AND SUNDAY 18TH OCTOBER

The team is looking forward to welcoming visitors old and new to the Airfield Museum as we open on BOTH Saturday 17th and Sunday the 18th October from 10.00am to 4.00pm (last admission at 3.00pm).

We are located in the beautiful village of Finchingfield on the first floor in Unit 2, next to the bridge. We have a stairlift for use by mobility impaired visitors. Sadly, we do NOT have toilet or refreshment facilities. Public toilets are located near the Village Hall. The village has two tea rooms and three pubs to choose from for refreshments.
Join us on Saturday/Sunday and learn about the rich and diverse history of RAF Wethersfield. You will not be disappointed.
Admission is FREE. Souvenirs available. Donations welcomed

As previously mentioned, the RAF Wethersfield based 819th Civil Engineering Squadron (Red Horse) provided continual support to the local community by completing a number of projects.
Following what is now known as 'The Great Storm', on the night of 15th-16th October 1987, the men of the Red Horse were once again on hand to use their specialist skills and equipment.
Here is a picture from the 1990 Yearbook showing some of the guys taking a short break whilst removing fallen trees blocking local roads. Their efforts were very much appreciated.

When the Airfield Museum was located on the base, visitors were given a tour of the site. Many would ask when various buildings were constructed.
Well this article which appeared in the Halstead Gazette on 12th October 1956, confirms when the sports hall opened. Racquetball courts were subsequently added around 1983/4.

The 12th October 1944 saw two Short Stirling bombers from RAF 299 Squadron take off from RAF Wethersfield on supply drop missions to Holland.
Both aircraft were piloted by New Zealanders, P/O D.H. Graham in LJ879 and W/O A. G. Brown in LK544. Heavy cloud cover obscured the drop-zones and both aircraft returned to base without dropping containers. The nature of these drops were such that a number of missions were unsuccessful due to not identifying the selected targets.

Airfield Museum member Brian Render has found an interesting RAF Wethersfield related news item that appeared in the Halstead Gazette on the 11th October 1957.
The story relates to roadworks associated with the extension of the runways at RAF Wethersfield to coincide with the introduction of the F-100 Super Sabre.
