1476 Rayleigh - Royal Air Force Air Cadets Official page for 1476 (Rayleigh) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets. All enquiries to [email protected] Worried about fitting in?

The Air Cadets is a youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Air Force with over 40,000 cadets and staff from hundreds of units across the country. Cadets undertake hundreds of activities every year, mostly subsidised by the Royal Air Force and earn qualifications useful in both civilian and armed forces careers. Are you up for fun, adventure, incredible experiences and making new friends? Are yo

u looking for something to give you the edge in life? Then welcome to the Air Cadet Organisation (ACO). Better known as the 'Air Cadets', we’re a UK-wide cadet force with more than 40,000 members aged between 12 and 20 years. So, are you ready to take the first step towards all the opportunities and benefits that the air cadets can offer you? It's important to know that we're not a recruiting organisation for the Services (but it's great if you decide you want to join later on). We're not interested in anything but you and your potential, and will help you get the most from your experience as a cadet. Equality is a central part of the Air Cadets’ ethic. The cadet experience is open to everyone, so whatever your nationality, background or ability, whether you're male or female, if you're in school year 8 or above and under 17 years old you can join us. The maximum age for entry is 17 years old, therefore you can request to join us any time after starting year 8 at school and before your 17th birthday. If you don't fit into that age group and still want to enjoy all of our activities and more, you could join as a volunteer.

On Friday, FS Capon attended the Rochford District Council Civic Dinner in her role as Rochford District Council Chairman’s Cadet at The Lawn. Cllr Jo McPherson kindly presented her with a certificate to thank her for her dedication to the post. The FS had a great time talking to the wonderful members of the charities Hockley Day Centre and South East and Central Essex Mind. These amazing charities do wonderful work in our local community. She also talked to the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, our Squadron President the Rt Hon Mark Francois MP, Mr Bayo Alaba MP, and the current and previous High Sheriffs of Essex. Well done FS for representing both our Squadron and the Air Cadets as a whole at this prestigious event.

Rochford District Council Councillor Jo Mcpherson Bayo Alaba MP

To all the Mothers involved in the Air Cadets, both on our squadron and in the organisation as a whole, we wish you a very happy Mother’s Day.

Yesterday, the Squadron hosted our annual Mother’s Day afternoon tea, to thank and celebrate the cadets’ mums. Organised by Mrs Baldwin of our Civilian Committee, this is the fourth afternoon tea we have run, and it could not happen without Mrs Baldwin’s hard work and preparation. Thank you Mrs Baldwin for making this event happen.

We would like to take this moment to thank all the parents, but especially the mums, who help wash and iron uniforms, sew on badges (and then sew them on again!) and taxi our cadets to their various events. We recently won the award for best squadron in Essex, and we could not have done this without your help. So to the mums and parents of our cadets, thank you, and have a lovely relaxing Mother’s Day.

Following the Essex Wing Presentation Evening, we are very proud to announce that 1476 (Rayleigh) Squadron have won the Essex Wing Lees Trophy nomination for the second year in a row! This means we have been recognised as the best squadron in Essex, and are being put forward to compete for top squadron in Central East Region.

We also won the Essex Wing Aircraft Recognition Trophy. For this, the cadets competed against other squadrons to identify foreign and British aircraft from all eras of aviation history.

We are proud to have won these awards and thank you to all of our cadets and staff who helped achieve them!

We are delighted to announce that FS Capon has been awarded a place on the International Air Cadet Exchange! After being put forward by our Squadron, then the Wing, she had an interview at Region level, and we are very proud that she now has the opportunity to go to America for two weeks in July.

IACE is a global programme that enables air cadet organisations from different countries to take part in exchange visits. It’s aim is to promote friendship, cultural understanding, and cooperation among young people with a shared interest in aviation. The programme involves cadets aged 17 to 21, who travel to a host country for around two weeks. While there, they take part in activities such as visiting military bases, airports, aerospace companies, and cultural sites.

Our Squadron Mess Dinner also marked CWO Baldwin’s dining out. Since joining in 2018, the CWO has had a distinguished cadet career, attending many camps, every event the Squadron has run, national parades, overseas trips, Gold Dofe and being the Lord Lieutenant’s cadet for Essex Wing in 2024-5. We are incredibly proud of the young man he has become and the Squadron and NCO team he has built. We wish him the best of luck with his RAF application and welcome him as staff in the mean time. Congratulations CWO Baldwin, and thank you!

Last night was our Squadron Mess Dinner, a formal three-course sit-down meal in the elegant surroundings of Apton Hall. The number of attendees was the highest we have had in recent years reaching 150, and the night was enjoyed by all.

Our Guest of Honour was Flt Lt Lana Balmer, an RAF Air Traffic Controller, who spoke about the many adventures she has had serving in the Royal Air Force. The Squadron President the Rt Hon Mark Francois MP also addressed the Squadron, and described how he mentioned 1476 in a speech he made in Parliament, meaning we are now immortalised in Hansard. The Chairman of Rochford District Council, Councillor Jo McPherson, also attended.

Two founding members of the Squadron, Peter and Michael Wood, were also in attendance, and were presented with certificates commemorating their long association with the Squadron by the youngest cadets.

The formalities ended with the customary humorous Sod’s Opera put together by the NCOs, and a raffle.
