RSA Interpretation Centre

RSA Interpretation Centre We're open Monday to Friday, 10:00am - 2:00pm. We're happy to let people visit outside our open hours and at weekends, get in touch to arrange a visit.

The Interpretation Centre is our ‘museum’. It opened in 2001. You can visit it between 10:00am and 2:00pm Mondays to Fridays. Just ask in the Management Office to be let in. The displays include model machine tools, engineers’ tool sets and examples of some of the factory’s products. This includes a ‘sectioned’ Lee Enfield No. 1 rifle. You can also learn about our 1783 Thwaites & Reed clock and our bell, Albert. The clock still works and Albert still tolls throughout the day.

Thank you to all who came out in the rain to visit us as part of Open House this year, we estimate that we had over 200 visitors!

We'd like to thank in particular the RSAF Apprentices Association for providing the volunteers and the Royal Armouries for their fantastic exhibition this year.

If you missed the exhibition it will be at the Museum of Enfield in The Dugdale Centre from Monday...

The posters have gone up and the Centre prepared for tomorrow!

We'll be open between 10am and 5pm. Remember the Lea Valley line is closed tomorrow, so our nearest station will be Turkey Street. Alternatively you can park for free in our car park at the RSA Island Centre.

20/09/2018

We are very excited to confirm that once again the RSA Interpretation Centre will be taking part in London Open House this Saturday (22nd September).

The Centre will be open between 10am and 5pm on the Saturday, with access available to the top of our clock tower to view our John Thwaite bird cage clock, dating from 1783 close up. Former Factory workers will be on hand courtesy of Royal Small Arms Factory Apprentices Association to tell their stories of working life at the Factory. We will also have our interactive Enfield at War display operating, detailing life in Enfield during both World Wars.

We will also be hosting as part of the Roll of Honour project an exhibition in the Community Hall from the Royal Armouries. This shall tell the stories of some of the workers at the Factory in the First World War and will function as a point of contact if you would like to contribute to the project over the coming months.

Finally, we’ve been advised that there will be no trains on the Lea Valley line all weekend. Thus our nearest station will be Turkey Street on the London Overground, it’s a half an hour walk, but you can pick up the 121 bus from Enfield Highway and alight at Canalside Walk to visit us.

The Youth Centre at the RSA Island Centre, Enact, which we work closely alongside provides a huge amount of support for families and children & young people from birth to 25 years of age.

The youth workers do fantastic work day in day out, creating opportunities for young people in Enfield to reach their potential and steer them away from the false glamour of criminality.

New Rifle Test For Experts (1951)

The EM2 was a prototype replacement for the .303 Lee Enfield. Bearing a striking similarity to today's SA80 assault rifle the gun was revolutionary for its day. However in the spirit of international cooperation the government of the day elected to produce a variant of the Fabrique National FAL self loading rifle, the L1 A1.

Sten Gun Production - 1942 (1942)

The mechanism for the STEN gun was designed by RSAF draughtsman Harold Turpin whilst he ate his dinner on the 2nd December 1940. By the end of the month two prototype guns had been made and tested. These became the easily assembled and cheap STEN gun, which could be made in any workshop. This ease of assembly, combined with its 'throw away' nature made it a popular choice for resistance forces across Europe during World War Two.

Location Unknown / Unclear. Various shots of the arms factory showing all stages of a sten gun production. Mainly women work on benches and in assembling. Th...
