Sketching at Shrewsbury Folk Festival, trying to capture the atmosphere of the different venues whilst listening to good music! My black stabilo pen ran out after the sketch of the outdoor Severn stage so I completed the last one of the Pengwern stage with a grey pen, which wasn't capable of creating the stark contrast I was looking for. But considering the pen work was done more-or-less in the dark it's not too bad!!

A lovely day out sketching at Dudmaston Hall near Bridgnorth with the Shropshire Art Society sketch club. First a pen and water sketch of a side aspect of the hall and then I dodged the raindrops, sitting under an enormous yew tree, practicing my greens and trees for part of the gardens with my watercolours. All in all a happy day! 😊

A hot July summers day at Cremorne Gardens in Ellesmere, North Shropshire. The blue of the sky is reflected in the water of the Mere, the grass of the hill on the far bank is dried to straw, the Egyptian geese are sheltering in the relative coolness of the shade on the old fishing jetty, and just one lone duck braves the beating sun on the water. I too am in the shade of the trees surrounding the Mere, sketching this peaceful scene.

Sometimes a painting doesn't turn out the way you wanted or like. In the original painting of a late summer afternoon in Cremorne Gardens (third photo) I felt there was too much space, no clear focus for the eye and I really didn't like the huge dark shadow in the bottom right! So I got brutal and got out the knife!

A lovely little square painting, where the eye is drawn immediately to the man sitting on the bench, appeared and then I used part of the leftover painting as a bookmark, where the composition also surprisingly worked! So got 2 for the work of one! 😅

A weekend with the caravan on a campsite near Ironbridge, Shropshire, and I couldn't not give the iron bridge a go! First a pen sketch to get the composition and have a first crack at values. Eat lunch and after come back to the sketch to see what needed improving or changing.....Then I decided to brave my very first plein air urban sketch using pen and watercolour (not yet finished so not yet shown!)

I had a superb location on one of the fishing jetties, under the shade of the trees looking down the river towards the bridge. Ian came to find me in the kayak at the end of the afternoon and took some snapshots of the artist at work! 😅

I had a lovely peaceful time practicing my plein air watercolour sketching this afternoon! Settled down in the zone, I was soon joined by some local wildlife; a red admiral butterfly settled first on my knee and then went to explore the paints, two ducks came foraging in the dry grass a metre or so from my feet and a family of ducky geese (no idea what breed) came and settled at the waters edge, beautifully posed to add the focus for my sketch!

Having moved location for a second sketch, I completely missed the two guys posing with arms and legs outstretched just out of my imagined frame! "Nope, she's in the zone" I did hear them mutter as they then passed by. And I was! Beautifully and peacefully in the zone.
