Oh and Studioarc received a commendation at the 2020 Scottish Design Awards for the very lovely Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums that we completed last year. The contract consisted of cases, object cores and plinths, timelines, benches, interactives and movable display walls. Really glad that it received the award as this was one of our favourite contracts completed in the last few years.

Yippee! Off furlough for a couple of weeks as we were allowed onsite at the Museums of the University of St Andrews. Fitted the reception desk that has been hanging around the workshop for the last 6 months and completed the rest of the exhibition furniture. 1 more day, sometime in the future, to finish light focus and touch ups. Hopefully we can get some more photos of the completed 4 galleries on that trip.

COVID-19 - is your small to medium business sitting on stock that could help care homes and care providers?

The thought occurs that many large businesses have people within their organisations who are very adapt at thinking outside-the-box. Who can identify the best way their business can help the wider community through the current crisis.
Whereas small to medium business are likely and understandably overwhelmed with the tasks involved in safe guarding jobs and keeping their workforce healthy.
This is a friendly shout-out to all like minded businesses.
Spare just a little time and think about the care homes and care providers in your local comminity. These vital care providers are further down the priority list in the governments supply response and are, we hear, often not allowed to bulk buy at present (as they usually would).

Can they use any of the stock you have? How easy is it to drop them an email to enquire?

For a manufacturing viewpoint things that immeadately spring to mind are;
*Masks - even the basic dust protection units may be better than nothing while the supply chain is so disrupted
*Disposable gloves
*Disposable aprons
*Cleaning solutions / isopropanol / handwash

It is just as important that we DON'T ORDER ANY OF THIS STOCK right now (even if the intention is to donate to a care provider in need). Don't lower available stock levels of suppliers when these care providers are turning to them in desperate need.
This message applies only to stock you may already have in-hand that is not required in the immediate term.

Can you help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to the most vulnerable in your community?

Geometry of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House illuminated with red lasers

https://www.dezeen.com/2019/10/29/farnsworth-house-mies-van-der-rohe-red-lasers-installation-luftwerk-iker-gill/ I loved this house when I was studying at Scott Sutherland. This treatment with lasers really highlights its geometry beautifully. #miesvanderrohe #farnsworthhouse

Designer Iker Gil and Luftwerk have projected a grid of red lasers across Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House to highlight the building's geometric form and its history.

There will be more piccies later after the official opening but thought people might like to see the benches, mentioned way back in 2017, in their rightful place in the rather lovely refurbished and extended Aberdeen Art Gallery. #aberdeenartgallery

And whilst the other's backs have been turned I've been machining aluminium! Suggestion card slots and some digital read out boxes. We keep coming up with more and more things to do with the CNC in-house. Anyway, back to the wood.

What have we been up to lately? As a small part of the exhibition fit-out of Aberdeen Art Gallery we got to prototype a Studioarc bench design before putting it into full production. This collection of pictures gives a good idea of how we do-what-we-do. Why-we-do-it is a lot more complicated, we'll update when our therapists work it out.

The total refurbishment of a hidden gem of Edinburgh's city centre.
We missed our chance to blow our trumpet about building these bespoke showcases and displays (we were just too busy at the time and now we've handed the keys over).
It's free entry and well worth the time to explore.

The Royal Burgess Golfing Society is now complete along with a happy client, new bars, oak panelling, glazed double door room divider, architraves and show cases. Great to be working with Richard Skakel at Sk3d again. The job was made complete hanging some enormous Mike Stoan chandeliers which were double tiered ellipses so you can imagine the scratching of heads involved. Steve, Richard and I were offered jobs as cleaners by a member the night before the opening, due to our hoovering and polishing prowess.

Finally, in this monster catch up, we took delivery of our new CNC router. Unfortunately we are so busy we haven't been able to get the engineer timetabled in to commission and train us! The machine is squatting, wrapped in polythene, under the mezzanine. Hidden behind the new extraction and feeling distinctly unloved. The enclosed photo is of exactly the same machine that Scottish Opera had installed in their somewhat larger workshop.

We are still doing St Cecilia's Hall but in a slight lull we started building about 70sqm of oak panelling and two new bars for the The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh designed by Richard Skakel at Sk3d. This is one of the rooms almost ready for our bars and panelling next week.

After Christmas we worked on a design by StudioSP for the very lovely Blackwell House in the Lake District. 4 mild steel museum cases (unusually), European Oak display frames and some interactive. One was a magnetic lightbox which, although we were sceptical to start with, Robbie had a blast developing. The weather was fabulous.

Wow, time flies! We have been flat out, so, as usual, a certain lack of quality to the photos. This a reception desk/counter for the new Melville Housing offices at the Dalkeith Corn Exchange. We worked with the Susan Stephen Architects and the Colorado Group to come up with something that would work for the client.

25/11/2015

Just in case anyone is wondering, we are currently onsite at the Tea Hut, developing some drawer cases for St Cecilia"s Hall, finalising a reception desk for Dalkeith Corn Exchange, fiddling with a puzzle room and in the time left, designing 2 kitchens. Oh and learning two entirely new CAD/CAM packages. When's Christmas?

Total Transformation - Royal College of Surgeons

We were delighted to have been involved in the fit-out of the Education Room for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Skillfully designed by Campbell & Co. this former storage room was transformed in the tightest of schedules.

Achieved in six weeks (from appointment to completion), including strip-out, electrical re-routing, floor finishes, new plumbing, lighting, graphics, perimeter showcases and whole bunch of storage solutions. Our chap’s hands closely resembled those on display and skin grafts weren’t included in the contract!

Loads going on at the moment but here are some piccies of a greenhouse we designed and built for an unused corner of a friends garden. Obviously unfinished internally! There is a deck but that is awaiting a bit of blingness.

Finished the Old Low Light Heritage Gallery in North Shields back in March but forgot to post some piccies of the finished product. Not only is it a great place to visit but after a fab coffee and a bit of mild browsing you can walk out the door and find two fishmongers selling the freshest crab. Bliss! Designed by GBDM

We have even managed to do a little work to the office. I have a desk and some ledges to catch dust! Hooray. Sure we will get round to some more by 2016. Also Guy is dragon whispering again for the NT. Out of his natural habit in the dark, he is now squatting on the top of the crates!

A braw day oot at the Castle / Scotland in fair weather shocker!

There was actually some blue sky to been found when we dropped in the other day at Edinburgh Castle. This time round to revisit an old project, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Regimental Museum, and update with a suspended graphic system for designers Studio SP.

Travelled down to Hawick Museum to complete the 2nd phase of the install. All that remains is for the graphics produced by Mackinnon and Slater to be fitted and then it is over to Shona to place her artefacts. Loving the diorama by Toni.
