“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door."
from The Raven

Indulge in some thrills and chills this Halloween courtesy of the master of the macabre Edgar Allan Poe.

Curl up by candlelight to read one of his short story collections or novels. You can borrow them at our libraries or read them online:
https://edin.ac/31XSCfj

Or delight in Vincent Price and watch one of Roger Corman's lesser known film adaptations of Poe in The Tomb of Ligeia on Box of Broadcasts https://edin.ac/31TKUCQ

And remember … that rapping at your door, that tapping at the window "'Tis the wind and nothing more." …

"At St Cecilia's Hall, I get to use musical instruments as a way of opening a window to the sounds of the past to our visitors, researchers and students. Through our wonderful collection, I get to show or play musical instruments that were often made hundreds of years ago and by doing this offer a tangible connection to an intangible experience - the experience of music. I love seeing how surprised people are at the sound of a 400-year-old harpsichord, the appreciation of the beautiful craftsmanship of a 500-year-old recorder, or the look of wonder at the sight of our 16-foot-long anaconda serpent. When facilitating research, it is exciting to see the enthusiasm exuded from a researcher as they handle an instrument that they have only read about - often their trip is a once in a lifetime experience. It is a fantastic feeling when a student ‘gets’ the connection between the design of a musical instrument and its relationship not only to the music of the past but also today’s music. Through my work I get to guide people in exploring the fascinating history of musical instruments and I love all the challenges and experiences that brings.”
Sarah, Learning and Engagement Curator,St Cecilia’s Hall #humansofourlibrary

If you're a student or member of staff at the University and you're interested to know what can we learn from musical instruments, you can book onto the Dissertation Festival session tommorrow (Fri 30th Oct) at 10am. Link to register --> https://edin.ac/37KbaDy
