This year, between July and August, the ship Sarmiento de Gamboa set sail for Cape Verde, where the research team on board will not only be gathering information about the health and resilience of ecosystems in the North Atlantic using state of the art technology, but also providing learning opportunities for marine scientists at all stages! This Friday, the team of the #iMirabilis2 expedition will be running an 'Ask Me Anything' session on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/), so head along and get your burning questions answered! You can catch up with everything that the team has been up to so far here: https://www.iatlantic.eu/imirabilis2-expedition/.

Climate change does not affect the planet equally, low latitudes, where many of the world’s poorest countries are located, are more likely to experience the effects of climate change.

These countries tend to suffer from more extreme weather events such as hurricanes, flooding and heat waves, which can result in millions of dollars of damage including loss of housing and electricity, contaminated water supplies, healthcare costs and much more. Many developing nations struggle to recover from the impacts of climate change and lack the infrastructure needed to protect themselves from future disasters.

Unfortunately, the countries that have the fewest resources to battle climate change are also the ones contributing to it the least. Not only do developed countries have the highest CO2 emissions they have dedicated budgets for disaster recovery and climate change mitigation putting them at much lower risk.

It is vital that developed countries work with the countries most at risk supporting their recovery and helping protect them from the impacts of climate change.

This #FridaysForFuture we are focusing on how climate change effects Asia! Asia is the biggest continent in the world, this means that its landscapes and ecosystems are hugely varied and so the impacts of climate change are also very diverse. Climate change is putting countries in Asia at risk of more extreme weather, bigger storms, terrible droughts meaning people can’t access clean drinking water and melting permafrost.

There are also many amazing #YouthClimateAcitivists who are working hard in Asia countries to fight these terrible impacts here are just a few of them.

Mitzi Jonelle Tan: She is the convenor and international spokesperson of Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP) and organised the youth climate summit MockCOP26.

Ridhima Pandey: At the age of nine Ridhima sued the Indian government over climate change Her home state of Uttarakhand has been devastated by heavy rains, flash floods and deadly landslides

Rita Naumenko: She is a Friday’s For Future coordinator which is particularly challenging in Russia because there are strict rules law prohibitive mass protest and people under 18 from organising protests.

To learn more about these amazing activists and the issues facing countries in Asia keep an eye out for out activity pack coming to #DynamicEarthOnline soon.

Today's research project featured from our #DiscoveringTheDeep exhibition is the BRITICE-CHRONO project!

The team studied the history of the last ice age by taking sediment cores from the seabed around Scotland using a machine called a vibrocorer (pictured). This can help us to work out how the Earth's glaciers and ice-sheets will respond to climate change and cause sea levels to rise - a growing problem for coastal communities around the world 🌊

This #FridaysForFuture we are focussing on some of the amazing projects that have been founded by #YouthClimateActivists who are working hard to solve some of the biggest problems that our Planet is facing.

Choked Up is an organisation co-founded by UK climate activist Anjali Raman-Middleton and other black and brown teenagers which campaigns for changes to clean-air law to protect communities.

Anjali says, "I want to see the government enshrine the right to breathe clean air into legislation. This would mean that any future decisions made on transport, industry and other key areas take into account the damage that could be done to our lungs."

Polluters Out is a youth-led coalition which unites young people and scientists from 80 countries to challenge the fossil fuel industry.

Climate in Colour is an organisation founded by Jocelyn Longdon which makes climate conversations more diverse.

The Sunrise Movement is a youth climate movement which campaigns to stop climate change and create green jobs. It was co-founded by Varshini Prakash who says, When I was in high school, I had low self-esteem. I didn’t believe I was powerful or smart or worth investing in. But, when I became part of a campaign, knowing that there were thousands of people like me out in the world transformed me."

To learn more about these amazing projects and the activists who founded them keep your eye out on #DynamicEarthOnline as we will soon share lots of #YouthClimateActivist profiles and climate activity packs.

Today for our #DiscoveringTheDeep spotlight we're taking you all the way to the icy Davis Strait near Greenland 🇬🇱

Here Eu-ATLAS scientists have studied the rich ecosystems present there. One of the ways they did this was by being lowered onto the ice! ❄️

What is Dynamic Earth?

Travel back to the beginning of time in our Time Machine before rocketing through the universe in a spaceship travelling billions of times faster than the speed of light and see stars explode on the other side of the galaxy. Feel the ground shudder as a molten lava flow speeds straight towards you and volcanoes throw clouds of ash and gas into the sky. The Polar ice caps are brought to within your reach giving you the chance to touch an iceberg for yourself. Fly high above ice cold glaciers and marvel at their power as they carve out entire continents. From your dizzying height it’ll feel so real you could almost be there before you soar from the sky and dive beneath the ocean in an epic 4D adventure across the globe. Experience films in the 360 degree ShowDome Cinema. New for 2019 watch Capcom Go! The Apollo Story - 50 years after the first moon landing, this film tells the story of the Apollo space programme, one of humankind’s greatest achievements. There are many films to choose from throughout the day, visit website to see daily schedule.

Do you still have to book to come now that restrictions have eased?
Congratulations to Dr Hermione Cockburn on her award of an OBE! Well done, Hermione well deserved!
Just to say how much we enjoyed the new showdome show "We are here". What really made it great was the hosts undeniable enthusiasm for the subject. Kept us all tuned in, and that's not the easiest thing for my 9 year old autistic son. So well done, very enjoyable 👏👏
Are there any restrictions on visiting just now?
It's very interesting the idea of what is a fascinating audio-visual experience that some people have... Is not going to be me the one who compare “Destino” with your performance “Dark Side of the Moon” Dynamic Earth (Dome Nights...) Judge for yourself.
Hi. Do you have luggage lockers suitable for small suitcases? Thanks
Brilliant family visit today, surprised to find so much unnecessary “pink and blue” in your gift shop - happy to discuss how you could support young explorers and future scientists to push back against gender stereotyping #letclothesbeclothes #lettoysbetoys
On September 21,2019 I was visiting When we left we were going to take lift to parking area. Having landed At Edinburgh Airport at 7:30 AM and with no sleep we went to a couple Of tourist attractions. I was exhausted And on our way to garage I didn’t realize The lift had 2 doors. I was leaning against what I thought was a back wall. When we arrived at a floor the “back Wall” opened up and I fell breaking my Femur. I want to thank the staff who comforted me while waiting for the Ambulance. Lisa, Luke, and I think Ross. You were the kindest, helpful people ever. Although I spent 8 days In the hospital after having surgery I Have a high regard for the Scottish Folks. I plan to come and visit Scotland Again without any accidents. Thank you for your support and Kindness❤️
We had a wonderful visit today and must mention your staff especially James on the main desk were outstanding, I love that you offer carers free admission and provide sensory bags for children who may need ear defenders etc, your cafe was very reasonably priced and your exhibits were fantastic x
