๐ซ All the team at Dynamic Earth would like to wish our visitors, friends, patrons and supporters a very happy Christmas! ๐ซ
Today marks the 150th anniversary of the expedition of the HMS Challenger - often described as the birth of oceanography!
On the 21st of December, 1872 the HMS Challenger set sail from Portsmouth, UK and began a 3 ยฝ year voyage of discovery, exploring the global deep-sea for the first time ever ๐
You can learn more about the Challenger expedition and the incredible marine science that has been going on since then in our new 'Discover the Deep' permanent exhibition, thanks to National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland ๐
๐ Solstice time! ๐
This an all-sky view from just above Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. The top red line shows the path of the Sun on the Summer solstice, and the bottom line is the path of the Sun today, the Winter solstice - shortest day of the year. Long, dark nights = perfect time for stargazing! โจ
You can come and learn more about the night skies and what you can see at different times of year in our 'What's Up' LIVE Planetarium show, daily at Dynamic Earth!

Itโs been super cold outside these last few days, and we've been loving the wintery mornings here at Dynamic Earth! But, have you ever wondered how Polar Bears stay warm living in the Arctic? ๐ปโโ๏ธโ๏ธ
Polar Bears have a special layer of fat, called โblubberโ and a thick layer of white fur. And beneath these layers, they actually have black skin! This means that when Polar Bears warm up they do not lose much heat, and can stay warm for longer. Just like when you wear a jumper and coat, and layer up to keep warm!
We have some super cute Polar Bears hiding out and keeping warm in our Gift Shop right now - why not come along and check out our range of fascinating and unique gifts while you're visiting Dynamic Earth, or pick up a present for that special someone's Christmas stocking... ๐โญ๏ธ๐

Come along and join us during the school holidays for some family fun, exploring the wonders of the deep.... ๐๐
Take inspiration from research vessels old & new, and build your own boat that can withstand Scotlandโs seas... Test your piloting skills with a Remote Operated Vehicle simulator, and get creative with some coral crafting - plus lots more exciting activities for the whole family! ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ชธ๐
Head to our What's On Guide for more details and remember to check our festive opening hours on the website. 'Sea' you there! ๐๐

โจ๐ Space News! ๐โจ
We are wishing NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration the best of luck as they attempt to launch Artemis I - the first in the Artemis program which hopes to take people back to the Moon for the first time in 50 years!
The launch window opens at 6:04am on the 16th November so, if all goes to plan, we could be waking up on Wednesday to the return of Lunar exploration! ๐
Artemis I is an un-crewed mission which will fly around the far side of the Moon testing out all the rocketโs systems before Artemis II takes humans on a similar flight. Then, in 2025 NASA hopes to land people on the Moon once again.
GOOD LUCK ARTEMIS! ๐๐๐

This November an international group of research scientists are embarking on an exciting expedition to help us understand giant earthquakes and mega-tsunamis. IODP Expedition 386 is taking place on board a research vessel in Japan where sediment cores from 8km deep in the ocean trench will be examined by a group of scientists from around the world. By studying the sedimentary record, a long history of seismic activity can be reconstructed. ๐ข
Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an approximately 40,000 km long arc-shaped belt around the Pacific Ocean where more than 90% of stress accumulated by global plate tectonics is released. The majority of Earthโs earthquakes occur here, including two of the largest known magnitude: the giant 9.2 Mw Sumatra earthquake in 2004 and the 9.0 Mw Tohokuoki earthquake in 2011. ๐
These high impact earthquakes and associated tsunamis were major geological events with catastrophic societal consequences, and the evidence of these and perhaps many more huge earthquakes through time is held in the sediments, waiting for discovery.
Join Dynamic Earth's Learning Team and the British Geological Survey on Microsoft Teams for a live link-up to the research ship to hear about their amazing research and life onboard, with opportunities to ask questions to the on-board scientists, too!

You may have seen in the news that the all-important COP27 conference has started - but what is COP27 and why should we care? ๐
COP is an abbreviation for the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (you can tell why they shorten it!) The meeting is held annually, and 2022 is the 27th meeting, held this year in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt. COP meetings are a unique opportunity for world leaders and their representatives to come together and discuss how the planet can navigate the potential disasters linked to climate change. ๐
Many have described COP27 as a defining moment, in terms of making real change to save our planet - scientific fact shows that the window of opportunity to take action is closing rapidly and we all must work together to overcome the issues we face. We will certainly be watching the outcomes of COP27 closely.... ๐

As part of National Engineering Day, weโre telling the story of HMS Challengerโs expedition which explored the deep-sea, looking at the incredible science and engineering of the expedition that paved the way for the marine science we see today!
We began to investigate ocean depths and salinity 150 years ago with the basic equipment that you can see in the first image, this was state of the art engineering at the time! Fast forward to today, improvements in engineering allow us to take measurements at extraordinary depths, with equipment such as the CTD which can take multiple measurements at multiple depths on a single launch!

Thanks to support from the ScottishPower Foundation we were able to work with local Community Groups as part of the Planetarium Pass! 10 community groups enjoyed sessions that engaged them with our Planetarium and all things space. The sessions were co-created with each Community Group to give them the opportunity to explore the science that they wanted to learn about. Their science learning was then focused and fun over multiple in-depth session. #TheBraidwoodCentre were inspired by the stars and created new artworks for the constellations. The flag first flew in 2019 in Madrid for the COP25 UN Climate Change Conference. It was also carried by the crowd both at the end of the 500,000 people-strong march for climate, and in the COP25โs Green Zone. On 6th March 2021, after an unprecedented year of natural disasters and pandemic, the eyes of the world flew high above Geneva - home of the Human Rights Council - to mark the opening of the FIFDH International Human Rights Film Festival. The flag is growing and continuing its journey to climate events around the globe, keeping the eyes of the world firmly on decision-makers. It will be present at Glasgow's COP26 in November 2021. Dynamic Earth will be marking #COP26 by hosting #WeAreWatching Tues 12th to Wed 13th October @ 10:00 AM Find out more about the project at wearewatching.org
