Good news update coming in from across the globe! Researchers in the Galapagos Islands have found that two native bird populations, Galapagos Penguins and Flightless Cormorants, have increased to record levels!

The penguins only exist in the wild on the Galapagos Islands so it is especially important their populations are healthy. Biodiversity around the world means a healthier planet that is more resilient to climate change, so this is great news. More of this please! 🐧

Did you know that you can be a scientist, right now, without even moving away from your screen? That’s right! You can be a Citizen Scientist just by playing this game, Cricket Tales! 🦗

Watch and record information on wild crickets to help us learn more about them and their ecosystem. The more we know about the crickets, the more we’ll know about how they might adapt to climate change, and whether they will survive. 🌳

Visit www.cricket-tales.exeter.ac.uk to play the game and become a scientist for yourself!

This weekend at Dino’s Outdoors we were helping keep Holyrood Park clean and had great fun with our litter pickers! We spent some time thinking about where litter in the park comes from, what it is made from and what happens to it, once it's been thrown away. Wasps often get a bad reputation, but are vital for the pollination of our plants and crops, just like bees and butterflies!

Calling all gamers! Try your hand at living as a wasp, one of the very important pollinators in our ecosystem! #Wasplove, a game developed by environmental scientists, challenges you to live as a wasp, defending your home from invaders, laying eggs and keeping energy levels up by finding nectar from flowers.

We love this game and the leaderboard is getting pretty competitive! Can you beat us to the top spot? Visit www.wasplove.com to have a go for yourself!

Glacial Formations

If you live in Scotland, you will be familiar with the incredible landscape all around us, much of which were carved out and formed by glaciers during our planet’s ice ages!

The last ice age ended over 10,000 years ago but we can still see the signs of it all around us, even in the city centre of Edinburgh! The very hill that Edinburgh Castle sits on was shaped by a massive glacial ice sheet which formed the distinctive ‘crag and tail’ - the crag being the hill and the tail being the Royal Mile!

Visit DIY Science on our #DynamicEarthOnline page below to find out more and to learn how to make a crag and tail at home, as well as some other glacial land formations.

International Migratory Bird Day

Tomorrow is #InternationalMigratoryBirdDay, celebrating how birds connect us and our planet!

Lots of common migratory birds in Britain such as chiffchaffs and goldfinches, are being affected by warmer temperatures due to climate change. The RSPB Love Nature reports that in the last 20 years, both chiffchaffs and goldfinches are living further north than they used to, due to higher temperatures and changing food availability, so we are more likely to see them in Scotland.

Chiffchaffs usually migrate to warmer climates in the autumn, but now many stay in the UK all year round. Some birds are able to adapt and survive in new places, but not all are, and so some species are at risk of dying out.

Greener Together

Did you know that in Scotland we throw away over 600,000 tonnes of waste food every year?

We can try and reduce this amount as much as possible, but we can also recycle the waste food and turn it into a source of energy! Check out this video from Greener Together to find out how.

https://www.facebook.com/GoGreenerTogether/videos/400426300789567

#fridaysforfuture #energynotenemy #foodwaste

Food waste: enemy or energy? Well, that all depends on what you do with it! When you throw food waste into your household bin, it gets taken to landfill, where it turns bad……reallllly bad. But recycle your food waste and you can turn it from enemy to energy!

If you ever take a trip around Holyrood Park here in Edinburgh, you may be lucky enough to spot these little pink flowers growing on the hillsides.

This is Maiden Pink, a rare wildflower which is protected by the Holyrood Park Rangers as it is thought to only exist at this location in the whole of Scotland! Holyrood Park has lots of special and rare wildlife and so has been made into a Site of Special Scientific Interest (or SSSI) to help protect the species there.

Keep your eyes peeled next time you visit your local park to see what kind of wildlife you can spot!

Why Every Environmentalist Should Be Anti-Racist

During #climateweek we’ve been examining all the ways in which the climate crisis can be tackled. It is important for us all to ‘do our bit’ and make changes in our daily lives to reduce our impact on the planet, but we also need to examine bigger, worldwide systems. This article by Vogue magazine, interviews intersectional environmentalist Leah Thomas, who explains the ways in which systemic racism and environmental issues are linked. People of colour are disproportionately affected by climate change, air pollution and resource extraction; find out how by checking out the full linked article!

As a Black environmentalist, I’ve long wondered: Why is fighting for my humanity considered an optional or special add-on to climate justice?

Happy Friday! Did you know that this weekend Edinburgh has a really special visitor?

In preparation for the 2021 Darwin200 global voyage, chartered tall ship Pelican of London will visit Edinburgh and Glasgow on its journey around the UK. On board is a team of specialist environmental scientists who will mentor a group of young scientists and work together to carry out observations, experiments, discussions, and problem-solving sessions related to the health of the UK’s surrounding waters.

Next year the ship will journey to the Galapagos to re-create the experiments that Darwin himself carried out on HMS Beagle. The aim is to understand how our planet has changed over time and to inspire the next generation of conservationists!

To find out more, and check where you can go to see this incredible ship, follow the mission here: Darwin200 or visit https://darwin200.com/uk-launch/

What is Dynamic Earth?

Travel back to the beginning of time in our Time Machine before rocketing through the universe in a spaceship travelling billions of times faster than the speed of light and see stars explode on the other side of the galaxy. Feel the ground shudder as a molten lava flow speeds straight towards you and volcanoes throw clouds of ash and gas into the sky. The Polar ice caps are brought to within your reach giving you the chance to touch an iceberg for yourself. Fly high above ice cold glaciers and marvel at their power as they carve out entire continents. From your dizzying height it’ll feel so real you could almost be there before you soar from the sky and dive beneath the ocean in an epic 4D adventure across the globe. Experience films in the 360 degree ShowDome Cinema. New for 2019 watch Capcom Go! The Apollo Story - 50 years after the first moon landing, this film tells the story of the Apollo space programme, one of humankind’s greatest achievements. There are many films to choose from throughout the day, visit website to see daily schedule.

It's very interesting the idea of what is a fascinating audio-visual experience that some people have... Is not going to be me the one who compare “Destino” with your performance “Dark Side of the Moon” Dynamic Earth (Dome Nights...) Judge for yourself.
Hi. Do you have luggage lockers suitable for small suitcases? Thanks
Brilliant family visit today, surprised to find so much unnecessary “pink and blue” in your gift shop - happy to discuss how you could support young explorers and future scientists to push back against gender stereotyping #letclothesbeclothes #lettoysbetoys
On September 21,2019 I was visiting When we left we were going to take lift to parking area. Having landed At Edinburgh Airport at 7:30 AM and with no sleep we went to a couple Of tourist attractions. I was exhausted And on our way to garage I didn’t realize The lift had 2 doors. I was leaning against what I thought was a back wall. When we arrived at a floor the “back Wall” opened up and I fell breaking my Femur. I want to thank the staff who comforted me while waiting for the Ambulance. Lisa, Luke, and I think Ross. You were the kindest, helpful people ever. Although I spent 8 days In the hospital after having surgery I Have a high regard for the Scottish Folks. I plan to come and visit Scotland Again without any accidents. Thank you for your support and Kindness❤️
We had a wonderful visit today and must mention your staff especially James on the main desk were outstanding, I love that you offer carers free admission and provide sensory bags for children who may need ear defenders etc, your cafe was very reasonably priced and your exhibits were fantastic x
