On This Day: 1st March 1634 Mikhail Borisovich Shein surrenders his army to King Władysław IV of Poland who had succeeded in lifting the Muscovite siege of Smolensk 5 months earlier. James Wardlaw was a major in the contingent of the Muscovite army that had been remodelled according to the Western European regimental system under Colonel Alexander Leslie of Auchintoul. The picture below depicts Shein at the moment of his surrender to the Polish King. Behind the prostrate Shein kneel three men who are dressed in a more western style. It is possible that Wardlaw is represented by one of these figures.
