Very sorry to hear of the recent death of the artist Alan Robb, who was Head of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College for 20 years and was latterly Emeritus Professor. Alan looked after the College Collection for many years and was hugely influential on a generation of art students.

Can you spare us a like?

We have a rather unusual request today for all our wonderful Facebook supporters, especially those in and around Dundee.

Our boiler plant at Discovery Point is now 26 years old and needs replacing. We have submitted an application for funding towards the cost of the replacement system, but the funder would like to see some evidence of community support for this work.

While this might not initially seem like the sort of project that would have much public impact, if our current unreliable boiler decides to stop working altogether it would mean a rather cold museum experience for our visitors, especially during the winter months! We could try and make excuses about offering an authentic Antarctic experience, but we’d rather spare our visitors this…

The replacement boiler system is also the first step towards improving our environmental footprint – Dundee Heritage Trust already holds a Silver Green Tourism Award and we have exciting plans to make Discovery Point a much more eco-friendly building.

We’d be delighted therefore if as many of you as possible could show your support by simply liking this post! We would also love to see any additional words of support you may have and will add these to our funding application which, if successful, will help us maintain the 5-star visitor experience at Discovery Point.

Many thanks – and we look forward to welcoming you back to Discovery Point and Verdant Works when the museums re-open after the current lockdown!

As we can't now do these physically we've created a virtual version of the first walk using Google Streetview, which you can see at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_NTo1FGa6Y&t=35s Hope you like it - more virtual tours to come in the future!

It's always exciting when we find out more about our collections. This bust was always a bit of a mystery but thanks to someone who came across it on the Art UK website we now know it's a plaster copy of Edward Hodges Baily's marble bust of Lord Byron, first exhibited in 1824. Possibly acquired for the English department of University College, Dundee? #MuseumFromHome

Very sorry to hear that our former Principal Michael Hamlin has died. He and his wife Augusta were great supporters of the collections and it was during his era that the Museum Collections unit was first established, and a regular programme of exhibitions was built up in the Tower Foyer and Lamb Galleries.
