Bergman Österberg Union | Celebrating the Legacy of Madame Österberg

'Friends of The Österberg Collection' is a Facebook Group which has been set up to share news from The Österberg Collection.
This Group welcomes all those who support the maintenance and preservation of The Österberg Collection.
The Collection is owned by the Bergman Österberg Union and is currently housed at North Kent College, Dartford, on the original site of Martina Bergman Österberg’s Physical Training College For Women.
The game of netball was developed at the College, and it was at the College that the ‘gymslip’ was first designed.
The Österberg Collection is an important research resource for Physical Education; Gender Studies; Women’s Studies; Health and Medicine; Education, and local history of Dartford, Kent. The Collection incorporates original documents; College and student records; historic photographs; items of sports costume; sports equipment and books.
Search for 'Friends of the Osterberg Collection' and apply to join the group.

Next Monday, 30th September, is National Sporting Heritage Day, which focuses on the sporting heritage in the UK. To help celebrate we are opening our Österberg visitor centre (NKC Dartford Campus) between 2-4pm, showcasing the history of our college and honouring the birthplace of Netball. We would love it if you could come along and join us!

Dear Member

Towards the end of last year, and because of the Netball Gold Medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Michael Portillo visited the archives of the Bergman Osterberg – where Netball was devised from basketball back in 1897!

He toured the archives, talking to Ann Stuart, the Chair of the Berman Osterberg Union, and then played Netball for 15 minutes!

The episode of Great British Railway Journeys is due to be transmitted on Thursday 21st February on BBC2 at 6.30pm. Our part of the programme will probably only be a short snippet, but will give more publicity for our Sport!

Do watch if you can and I hope you enjoy the episode.

Kind regards - Joan

Why exercise alone won’t save us

An interesting read about the history of exercise and its role in tackling today’s sedentary lifestyles. Madame would no doubt have had plenty to say about this!

The long read: Sedentary lifestyles are killing us – we need to build activity into our everyday lives, not just leave it for the gym

The Christmas season is now upon us and with it the giving and receiving of presents amongst family and friends. Sometimes items are upgraded so older versions become surplus to requirements and need to be recycled. The archive has recently moved and would welcome any of the following:- DVD player, portable cd drive, scanner, large flat screen TVs, slide projector, trolley to move items between the new rooms and mannequins to display clothing in the new visitor centre. Please consider passing on any of these if they are no longer needed in your household!
E-mail any offers to: [email protected]

What a great day! The University organised another wonderful ceremony and everyone really enjoyed themselves. So proud to see Michele Verokken receive her Hon Doctorate and delighted that Norma Izard was there having recovered from last year’s car crash. Great to see some of my year (‘77) all looking so good too! And the weather was beautiful, what more could we ask for?
(Please post your photos on here or on our website so that we can get a good record of the day. And don’t forget to join the BOU and support all our work in the future!)

Dartford girls! If any of you missed out on a place at the degree ceremony, get in touch asap with the alumni dept at the University of Greenwich - [email protected]

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM ANNE STUART:
The University are now trying to rectify the situation. If you have got into the honorary degree ceremony, but some of your Year group haven't, then please send in those people's details to [email protected] asap, or get the individuals to do it. The alumni office needs need to know the full extent of the demand.
It has indeed taken a great deal of time and effort to get this far, and I am really hoping that they will be able to get year groups together, now that they've realised how important it is. Make sure you tell them your Year Group. Thank you to all of you who have written to them about this.

Are their any ladies from the College football team back in the late 1970's. I am researching Dartford Football Club, Womens team and am putting together a history of the earlier days of ladies football - the 1970's and 1980 in particular. Can anyone help please?
1970's group reunion 6/7 September. Details to be circulated shortly.
Sad news - Maureen Kenney (1952) died on the 12 February. She was on holiday in Kuala Lumpur with her son and died in her sleep. The funeral will be in a few weeks time and her daughter is collecting reminiscences about Maureen for the occasion. These can either be written or a short video. If you would like to contribute anything, please send it to me via this page or to my e mail: [email protected] Maureen was a good friend and a staunch supporter of the BOU, rarely missing a reunion. We will miss her. Anne Stuart
