Scotlandโ€™s cultural landscape is at risk of collapse, due to continued inaction and backtracking from the Scottish Government on key arts funding pledges.

Artists Matter ๐Ÿ“ฃ
Response to Creative Scotlandโ€™s Closure of the Open Fund For Individuals on 30th of August 2024

As a Trade Union representing freelance visual and applied artists, we are outraged by the shock announcement made on Monday 19th August by Creative Scotland, who revealed that they will be closing the Open Fund for Individuals. They have stated that this is due to a budget shortfall from the Scottish Government citing that the money that had been promised to Creative Scotland in the Spring Budget has not been delivered.

We are deeply concerned about the immediate and knock on effects this decision will have on our members and across the whole sector. This decision by Creative Scotland and the Scottish Government is further punishing individual freelance artists who are already in precarious financial situations.

Artists are interdependent with networks in the wider economic ecosystem in Scotland. If elements of these ecosystems and networks collapse because of financial instability, there will be consequences that cause permanent scars not only to the vibrancy and viability of the arts sectors, but also to the local urban and rural communities in which they are embedded and serve. This includes impacts on tourism and hospitality jobs that are dependent on the arts and culture sectors.

The Open Fund is the primary source of arts funding in Scotland for individual artists, musicians, writers and performers to develop their vision for their own practice on their own terms, outside of the institutional restrictions and parameters set by arts organisations.

Scotland will not have an arts and culture sector without the individual practices of artists, who make the artworks. This decision to stop support for freelance artists particularly affects artists from low income, marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds. It means that the only people who will be able to afford to develop the direction of their practices are those from privileged or wealthy backgrounds.

Artists who are planning to apply for the Open Fund have until 2pm on Friday 30th of August 2024 to submit their grant applications. See the announcement on Creative Scotlandโ€™s website here: https://www.creativescotland.com/news-stories/latest-news/archive/2024/08/open-fund-for-individuals-closure-of-fund

SAU President, B.D. Owens, along with colleagues from the STUC Creative Industries Trade Unions Group, is due to meet with a representative from Creative Scotland and Scottish Government officials on Thursday 22nd August to find out more details and we will be demanding answers. We will keep you informed.

CHRIS PERRY EXHIBITION

Tomorrow is the last day of our exhibition of works by Auchtermuchty based artist Chris Perry, so pleased do pop in if you'd like to see these excellent pieces in the flesh before we wave them goodbye

And don't forget that we also have prints of Chris's much admired large landscape painting of West Lomond. There are smaller prints available to buy in the gallery, measuring 15 x 12 inches, and Chris is also offering a much larger limited edition version (only 25 of these prints will be produced), which you can order through us here at Foursticks. These measure 29 x 24 inches.

It's been a pleasure hosting Chris and his work over the last fortnight.

CHRIS PERRY EXHIBITION OPENING NIGHT

On Friday evening we were delighted to officially open our much anticipated exhibition of works by the very talented Chris Perry from Auchtermuchty. Chris's work has been turning heads at the gallery for some time now - if you've visited recently you'll be sure to have spotted his stunning landscape oil paintings of the Lomonds. But Chris is also an incredible portrait and figure artist, and you can see the full collection at the gallery until the 15th of August.

We had a wonderful opening night - the gallery was bustling with people, and some great conversations were sparked by Chris's work.

Please do stop by for a look if you're in Falkland.

We had a VERY exciting visitor this morning, in the form of Su from , who dropped off a box of her expertly hand-bound treasures which are all ready for you to admire.

We have lined Coptic bound books in A5 and A6, alongside soft bound notebooks (both lined and blank), all finished in the most beautiful cover papers. And I have to confess there's been a fair bit of sniffing going on here too this morning, as the incredible smell of Su's soft leather bound journals fill the air. We have these is A6 size and in a variety of colours, and Su has skillfully used her offcuts to make the cutest, tiniest keyring sized versions as well.

We're so pleased to welcome to the gallery - we can't wait to show you her gorgeous work.

Our stunning Outlander collection is here too - if you love the show you'll love the pieces we've chosen for you!

There are exquisite lino prints from .grain.prints

Come for a browse if you're out and about in Falkland today

We've had some beautiful and unique jewellery delivered to the shop this week, from the talented Stella Shearer. Stella sources gorgeous vintage teaspoons which are already full of character, then quite literally adds her own twist by skillfully bending them into rings.

As such, each ring is a one-off. We have a selection of everything from chunky checkerboard to delicate Celtic latticework, and everything in between. They're already proving popular - do pop in and have a look.
