That's TV Hampshire

That's TV Hampshire visited the House yesterday to find out about our appeal to save Jane's roof. We've been overwhelmed by the number of people who've sponsored roof tiles so far. 🏡 Play your part in the restoration efforts here: www.justgiving.com/campaign/roof-tiles

The Jane Austen Museum in Alton is calling for people to help raise funds to save the original roof of the house.

As inclement weather has damaged the roof over the years, the museum is in need of restoration to secure the author's house for the future.

The museum is asking individuals to sponsor a tile which will be in their name and they will indirectly be a part of the museum's history.

our reporter James Poingdestre has more on this story.

The most treasured Austen site in the world

Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, Hampshire, is the country cottage where Jane Austen lived and wrote.

It was here that Jane’s genius flourished and where she wrote, revised and had published all her major works: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Jane lived at what is now Jane Austen’s House Museum for the last eight years of her life. She moved here in 1809 with her mother, sister Cassandra and friend Martha Lloyd. The cottage was owned by Jane’s brother Edward, who had been adopted by the wealthy Knight family and had since inherited the Chawton Estate. The cottage was offered to the women rent-free for life.

Today, Jane Austen’s House Museum is a Grade I listed building and one of the most important literary sites in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. The Museum holds an important collection of objects associated with Jane Austen, including letters written by Jane and personal effects belonging to her and her family. Particular highlights include her jewellery, first editions of her books, textiles and the table at which she wrote her much loved novels.

Visitors to the Museum can freely explore Jane’s home and beautiful cottage garden whilst learning about her life through exhibitions and displays. Hands-on activities for all ages can be found alongside in-depth information panels and family objects, housed in the rooms that Jane would have known. Then, once visitors have had their fill of the enchanting atmosphere, the Museum shop with a large selection of souvenirs is well worth a browse. Schools and colleges are welcome too, with a dedicated Learning Officer ready to inspire and transport classes back to early 19th century Hampshire.

Jane Austen’s House Museum has Accredited Museum status under Arts Council England’s Accreditation Scheme and is a registered charity.

Wow! "The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got that Way" just cleared up a mystery for me. Bill Bryson writes, "A 'forest' was any area of countryside set aside for hunting, whether or not it was covered with trees. In England, to this day, the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire, is largely treeless, as are large stretches of the New Forest in Hampshire."
Christmas greetings from Regency Rum Bluffers and an opportunity to sing along to the Portuguese Carol as written out by Elizabeth Knight in the Austen Music Collection. We hope you enjoy hearing my 1812 square Broadwood piano.

I enjoyed a lovely visit to the Museum last Sunday, which led me to exploring more about Jane Austen in Southampton, where I’ve lived all my life. I’ve recently started a new job in the town centre and spend my lunchtimes wandering around - I’ve discovered all sorts of things which have been here my whole life, but which I never noticed before! Today I found this plaque in the Nuffield Southampton Theatre. More info here: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-hampshire-46252657
