The contents were pretty surprising… 📖

While investigating the site of a medieval market in Earl Soham, we came across one of the stranger entries in the diary of local surgeon and farmer William Goodwin, who lived in the village during the late 18th century.

In 1786, Goodwin recorded an advert for the “Surprizing Worcestershire Heifer” - a 6-year-old animal said to have two heads, four horns, four eyes and four ears.

Goodwin was a rather eccentric bloke from what we’ve read and fascinated by all sorts of oddities. He even recorded remedies for snake bites - involving fire.

Good ol’ Goodwin, ay…

In this week’s episode, we returned to the site of a lost medieval market and explored some of the weird and wonderful history surrounding it.

First chartered by Edward I, this market site has yielded some beautiful finds, including a sixpence of James I - a king with rather strong views on witchcraft.

We also uncovered the story of an eccentric Georgian doctor who lived nearby, and some of the rather questionable remedies he recorded…

No surprise, we’ll be out in the fields looking (safely!) at this evening’s solar eclipse!

And as we do, we’ll be thinking back to 29th October AD 878, when a total solar eclipse crossed Anglo-Saxon England.

It was the time of Alfred the Great and Guthrum, and the eclipse was even recorded by the Anglo-Saxons.

So what did people back then make of the sun disappearing?

Well, a later eclipse in AD 1133 gives us a pretty good idea. A chronicle records:

“The Sun became as it were a three-night-old Moon, and the stars about it at mid-day. Men were greatly wonder-stricken and were affrighted…”

Still, knowing us, we’ll miss it because someone’s got a signal 😂
