Woodend Mining Museum

Woodend Mining Museum Woodend Mining Museum has been set up to celebrate the History of Coal Mining in the Lancashire Coalfield particularly in Burnley This is the only Mining Museum in the Burnley Coalfield.

Woodend Colliery was one of the smaller pits in the area, it opened in 1912 and closed completely in 1959 and it was in fact the last vertical pit shaft to be sunk in the Burnley Coalfield
Although there were a lot of pits around here there is unfortunately very little left on the surface for us to see and so when we bought the old colliery site in September 2009 little did we know of the history

I like Albert but he looks his best over the fence!!πŸ˜€

Let me introduce you all to Albert our Broad Breasted bronze Turkey Stag. He is all pumped up with testosterone at the moment as his ladies are sitting on their eggs and he is feeling very protective.
Usually he roams freely like a stately galleon but unfortunately he is a bit aggressive just now so is confined to barracks which he is not too happy about!!

This is all Keith's work, isn't it super? Want to be able to do it yourself, well ring 01282 788290 and come on one of his one to one wood turning courses here in his "Cabin On The Farm"

Now you all know how good Keith is, he can turn his hand to anything, in fact I have yet to find something that he can't do, Anyway these are some of the things he makes in his cabin here on the farm, and if anyone is interested in having a go at making something similar he does run one to one courses as well. Just give us a call on 01282 7882990 for more details

Hi, if any of you know this man, or if you see him anywhere he is not to be trusted. He rang the campsite last night to ask for a Pitch and said he would ring us when he was 10 minutes away, which he didn't do. He then arrived at the site was spoken to by another guest but assured him that he had spoken to us and we had told him where to pitch his tent. He then stayed the night, used his disposable BBQ leaving the debris for us to clear, and this morning at about 7.15 am he packed up and left without paying a penny. So if you know other sites in the area warn them to be on the lookout for him

Yesterday was a bit quieter than I would have liked but we had a good day, and those who came enjoyed the wonderful sunshine as well as the food and the stalls. A big thank you to the Burnley Miners Memorial Fund group for their tombola stall and in fact to all who came along and joined in the party.😊😊

We are going to have a party on Saturday 19th May, a Royal Wedding seems as good a reason as any and we are on with the organisation of it now.
It is a bit last minute but hey ho here goes:

We are planning to have the Wedding of the Year live on TV in the cafe from 10 am
There will be stalls such as a Plant Stall, Cake Stall, Woodwork Stall and
The Miners Memorial Fund are going to have a Tombola

The Pods Shepherd's Hut and Lodge will be open for viewing and of course all our animals will be around for the children to pet and feed and don't worry if you have no carrots or apples for the ponies we will have them available here along with corn for the hens.

We will have Right Royal food and drinks available all day in the cafe starting with King Sized Breakfasts from 8.30 am and Queen Sized Cream Teas in the afternoon

Anyone wanting to have a stall just get in touch and for a small donation to the Museum we will be happy to have you along on a first come first served basis, so give me a call on 0780 927 4910 asapπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§οΈπŸ˜ŠπŸ€”πŸ€£.

We have also hosted a meeting of the organisers of the Burnley Mining Memorial Fund which we hope to help in anyway we can. These guys want to raise money to buy a memorial to all the men who died in the Burnley Coalfield, it is a very worthy ambition and if anyone can help in anyway I am sure they will appreciate it, so as their campaign progresses we will keep you informed. For more information get in touch and we will pass your details on.

Well it almost that time again, the start of the "season for camping and caravanning" and this year Glamping!! Last year we added Bell Tents which were a huge success but this year we have invested very heavily and put two beautiful Pods on the site which are ready now for their first guests, and we are part way through fitting out a Family Lodge which will be ready in two or three weeks.
The Pods are magnificent and were built by Lune Valley Pods to a very high standard. They are for two adults and have either a comfy settee or two chairs, a coffee table, a TV, a Fridge for that all important wine or beer, a double bed with memory foam mattress and a toilet.
They both have tea/coffee making facilities and color
co-ordinated bedding and curtains, in fact they are in every way just like a quality hotel room. Each pod has its own table and chairs to sit outside when the weather improves and as soon as we can we will extend the decking to put them on. The Pods have LED lighting and a heater for when it is cooler.
So why not come and chill out and try out one of Pods, they are on offer at the moment for just Β£59 per night for two adults, give me a call and I will book you in. 01282 420701 or 0780 927 4910

I am just sat here thinking how lucky we were that The Great Mile was last week!! The weather is awful today and I honestly do not know where we could have sat the riders for their meals to keep them dry, however for next year we have already bought a 10m x 4m commercial marquee, because one thing is for sure we could not be so lucky twice, not in this country !

They will be here tomorrow, arriving from around 4pm having made it down from Glencoe in Scotland. It will have been an exhilarating but hard ride and I hope many of you will turn out to welcome them to Lancashire in general and Pendle in particular.
We will have a stall where you will be able to get a hot or cold drink so come on down and enjoy the spectacle. See you tomorrow!!

They say on the website that these Bell Tents can be put up by a girl on her own in 15mins !! This one on a rare hot day this last week took two men working hard, about 45 minutes to get the job done. But the job is done and the tent is up now on its new base and already rented out. It looks magnificent, Job very well done guys thanks.

This gentleman arrived with his bike and trailer all the way from Belgium as he cycled around Britain, what a nice guy by the name of Francis Klein. We managed the language problem between us all, although his English was better than my French or Harry's German! But we sent him on his way with a full farmhouse breakfast to fuel the journey!

On Friday we were treated to a visit by the "Galloping Grannies" mainly ladies with just one or two men who go horse riding together and a lively lot who came for a tour of the Museum and then Afternoon Tea. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and we certainly enjoyed having them here and hope to welcome them back again sometime soon.

Today we have hosted a birthday party for Cath Birtles who is 82 years young. The family came for a meal followed by a birthday cake homemade here as well and then had a tour of the Museum. This was of special interest to Alwyne Birtle, Cath's husband as he was a miner in days gone by and in fact was a trained rescuer, he brought us some photos of Bank Hall and also his Rescue Lapel Badge. Thank you so much ALwyne and enjoy the rest of your birthday Cath.

We have had yet another amazingly busy weekend and this time without me on the scene, I have somehow managed to damage my leg and am now hobbling about on crutches not really what I need right now!! However Harry , Keith and Debbie have all risen to the challenge and everything is going along smoothly, with lots of breakfasts and lunches in the cafe yesterday for both campers and visitors and everyone leaving not having missed me at all😒
Ah well no-one is indispensable! But thanks to them for all their hard work especially Debs who had to sort out all the cooking and did a magnificent job. Thanks Debbie😊

Yesterday our Gift In Wills team held a special event at Woodend Mining Museum. There were no high-tech machines to extract coal from Woodend in the 1800’s and this is still the case in the mines in which Brooke works today. Life for equine and owner is hard; working in dangerous conditions, to earn enough to feed their families. Over the last 150 years the UK has moved to mechanisation. In Pakistan, the current percentage of mines mechanised is only 5%. What will this increase to over the next 150 years? Leaving a Gift in your Will to Brooke helps to strengthen local service providers within the coal mines today so that these animals can live a life free from suffering To find out more, visit thebrooke.org/get-involved/leaving-legacy 🧑
