Atelier Beside the Sea Our new arts venue is situated on Brighton Beach across three seafront arches and includes a shop, galleries, and teaching, community and events spaces.

We are a new arts venue on Brighton Seafront, offering a wide range of creative activities and the best in art and craft to inspire and surprise our local community and visitors to our city. GALLERY

ies is a space for surprising, fresh and original contemporary art, craft and design. A national and international programme of exhibitions is currently under development. SHOP
The shop specialises in beautiful and practical handmade work and highlight the individual makers and their processes and be available online. We offer a carefully curated selection of ceramics, textiles, jewellery, print, painting and sculpture from Atelier 51’s designer-makers alongside other outstanding artists, craftspeople and designers from Sussex, and across the world. The teaching and community programme create and run varied classes for all levels. From porcelain paperclay, wood carving and jewellery making, to sustainable fashion design and drawing on the beach, there is something to inspire all ages and interests. HIRE
The arches are available to hire for community events and local artists and makers; corporate meetings, events and product launches.

RISO SHOW 2 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT:
Alice Bartholomew is an illustrator and designer, who has just graduated from Kingston School of Art with a degree in Illustration Animation. Alice’s practise revolves around using analogue techniques to create colourful, patterned and vibrant prints. She particularly enjoys experimenting with different print processes and discovering new methods of making. Throughout the last two years Alice has specialised in risograph printing, testing the limits of colour overlaying and mixing.

RISO SHOW 2 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT:
Maja Andersen's Riso prints are inspired be mid century Scandinavian graphic style and past vacation travel outside of her midwestern home. The print's subject matter is an illustrated page from an imagined story book which lives in her head. Her Risograph prints are printed in 2 to 3 colors with at least one fluorescent color which really pops! A characteristic of riso prints is a slight mis-registration of color in some of the outer areas which adds charm to the print. Maja lives with her husband, Tom, and two cats in Kansas City, Missouri. Maja and Tom have a collaborative Etsy shop, Four Eyes Illustration. Maja's hobbies include flamenco dance lessons and travel.

RISO SHOW 2 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT:
Noah Kulman is a Worcester based illustrator/printmaker who specialises in Lo-Fi printmaking and tongue-in-cheek characters. Since graduating in 2021 from Brighton University Noah has worked/displayed at a variety of events such as the Bankside Gallery, Birmingham Design Fest, RBSA and CMYK Festival sharing their love of printmaking and Riso to others. In 2023 Noah’s independent exhibition ‘Kulmanation’ explored pushing the boundaries of Riso alongside rubber-stamping to showcase a wide array of weird and wonderful character design.

Visit our Brighton Beach store Friday-Monday this beautiful long weekend and answer ten questions correctly to get a chocolate prize!

It’s not that easy so we’ll give you a clue if you get stuck!

Write down the of the picture on the sheet collected from the till, and when you’ve found them all come back to the till to claim a chocolate egg!

RISO SHOW 2 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT:
Fern (they/them) is an artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and co-owner of Swan Meadow, a q***r art co-op, risograph and film studio, and workshop space in St Louis, Missouri, USA. They use art as a way to process the world around them, ranging from environmental education to mental health struggles and q***rness. The natural world is a frequent topic of adoration for them as they attempt to understand their place in the universe; Fern’s art is the product of this. All of their work is risograph printed by Fern at Swan Meadow.

RISO SHOW 2 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT:
Abby Sumner is a designer and printmaker specialising in vibrant, eco-conscious risograph prints, paper goods, and stationery. Working from her home studio in Cheshire, she uses the risograph printing process to craft distinctive designs that combine modern aesthetics with sustainable practices. Abby is passionate about the dynamic interplay of colour, shape, and form, creating work characterised by bold, eye-catching compositions that evoke a sense of energy and happiness. Drawing inspiration from architecture, geometric patterns, typography and travel, her creations are a fusion of contemporary graphic design with a rich visual language that radiates with neon fizz.

Tom Patrick is an experienced and versatile illustrator. He has worked in small design shop, large corporate art departments and for many years as a freelance illustrator creating images for a variety of client projects. He enjoys the research process as much as the storytelling that is part of every illustration project. Tom is eager to start work on new creative and collaborative project opportunities. He lives with his wife, Maja, and two cats in Kansas City, Missouri. Tom and Maja have a collaborative Etsy shop, Four Eyes Illustration.

Hazel Laing is an illustrator and printmaker from Edinburgh, now based in London. She creates playful, nostalgic work inspired by the Ballet Russes, theatre, costume and folk tales.

Vicki Johnson is a Norwich based illustrator with a background in printmaking and textile design. Vicki makes colourful work with a nostalgic feel inspired by flora, fauna, folk art and the everyday.
Vicki co ran a print studio, teaching screen printing and worked as a freelance designer before focusing on the development of her product based business trading under the name Printer Johnson. Printer Johnson Ltd is now a paper goods company specialising in illustrated greeting cards and riso printed wall art. Working with a range of artists and illustrators, their colourful collections are stocked by independent shops, galleries, museums and gardens within the UK and beyond.

HERMIPPE（ヘルミッペ

Joining us from Japan for the Riso Show 2 is HERMIPPE, a pixel artist whose work is a nostalgic window into the world of Tama New Town, his hometown in Japan. Drawing dreamy apartment blocks from memory, Hermippe blends architectural quiet with the textures of retro gaming. His work spans sci-fi illustration, insect studies, and pixel-perfect details — all rendered in unmistakable style.

Beyond the prints on our walls, Hermippe’s creativity spills into zines, record sleeves, embroidery, and even music videos. A truly multidisciplinary mind with a soft spot for structure and story, their RISO work is delicate, strange, and full of heart.

Kate Black lives and works in Malton, North Yorkshire where she creates imagery in response to objects and events inspired by social history, artefacts and artworks found in museum and gallery collections. She’s particularly drawn to British Folk Art, textiles and children’s drawings which comes through in her work. Malton is a thriving market town, which has sheep and cattle markets each week, and is home to many horse racing stables which have inspired Kate’s latest horse series.

We're celebrating the start of spring here at Atelier Beside The Sea. The warm weather has brought out the visitors and locals heading down to the beach to see the last of the FOLK exhibition and maybe catch the sunset with a sundowner at a beach cafe.

SPRING SPIRIT
This brilliant papercut - laser cut limited edition sums up the pagan spring beautifully.

Pippa Dyrlaga is a paper artist based in Yorkshire, England. She uses traditional techniques to create contemporary artworks. Her work is inspired by the natural world, and the things she encounters around her. The simplicity of a blank sheet of paper appeals to Pippa. Paper is used in so many aspects of our lives and used to communicate with each other, and she wants to do this through her work. There is nothing as ordinary as a blank sheet of paper, but it has so many possibilities and can be turned into something beautiful or meaningful, without adding anything to it. Pippa started paper cutting in 2010. Her paper cut works are hand cut from a single sheet of paper. They are first drawn out by hand on the reverse of the paper, and then cut using a scalpel. They can take hours to complete, and she finds the process is as important to her as the finished pieces.laser cut limited editions.

The Madness of March hares

Spring has sprung here on Brighton beach, and the seafront is becoming more vibrant with every lengthening day.

We are definitely feeling it here in the gallery. So in honour of spring we offer an unlikely lineup of March hares...

Leading the pack is this papier-mâché hare by the brilliant Emily Warren aka The Stealthy Rabbit,

and

Hester the Hare features in Sarah Young's cast of Cut & Sew tea towel characters.

In Cally Conway's print, the Running Hare bounds through ears of wheat in an image celebrating Folk Art and the flora and fauna of the British Isles.
