Coming to the Window Gallery in May: Ellipsis Prints presents Lèche-Vitrines 👀

Since the mid-19th century, shop windows have shaped our relationship with desirable objects. In French, window shopping is described as lèche-vitrines—literally, ‘window licking’—a phrase that vividly captures the longing stirred by objects on display.

Just as shop windows entice us to covet what lies behind the glass, this exhibition draws a parallel with the way the female body is treated as an object of visual consumption.

This selection of prints on show in The Window Gallery will explore themes of desire and identity, challenging the roles we inhabit and the ways we are seen.

We’re excited to announce In the Eye of a Dream, a new multimedia exhibition by Kinnari Saraiya, opening in our Main Gallery this spring! Co-presented with Brighton Festival as part of their 2025 programme.

In the Eye of a Dream explores how colonial powers afraid of rebellion used anthropologists to analyse the dreams of native populations in search of signs that a rebellion might be on the horizon. Saraiya reimagines these histories through indigenous perspectives that see dreams as portals to alternate realities and transformative experiences.

This immersive exhibition blends historical archives with imaginative fiction, featuring hand-embroidered Jacquard punch cards, lotus seeds, interactive digital worlds, and a travelling cinema. Visitors are invited to explore dreamlike realms inhabited by animated characters whose stories unfold through dance, choreographed in collaboration with Indian classical performers.

We’re thrilled to announce that Dionne Elizabeth has been selected for the 2025 Phoenix Studio Award!

Dionne is a transdisciplinary artist, researcher, spacemaker, writer, educater, facilitator, DJ and creative producer whose inclusive, sensory-led practice spans art, embodiment, care, sound, ecology, ritual, and community building.

The Phoenix Studio Award provides a year of rent-free studio space and support to an artist from an underrepresented background, celebrating originality, equity, and diverse artistic voices in Brighton & Hove. With huge thanks to art critic Tabish Khan who helped select the award winner this year from a very strong set of applications.

Welcome to the Phoenix community, Dionne!

It's the final week to see Home to My Teenage Bedroom by Grant Foster!

On display in our Main Gallery until 13 April, this evocative exhibition invites visitors into the artist’s teenage bedroom—a formative creative space where past and present, analogue and digital collide.

Through a series of paintings and collages, Foster draws on a personal archive of newspaper clippings, adverts, and text fragments to explore how early visual influences and obsessions shape artistic identity. The result is a dynamic, layered body of work—both anarchic and nostalgic—that blends humour, historical references, and poignant reflections on memory and meaning.

Don’t miss your chance to experience this powerful and playful exploration of image, influence, and expression.

Open Wednesday-Sunday, 12-5pm.

Home to My Teenage Bedroom by Grant Foster

"The exercise of layering—whether through pages, images, or paint—echoes the act of turning, where the centre offers a meeting point between two disparate sides. When I think like this, I can return to my teenage bedroom."

Running until 13 April in the Main Gallery
Wednesday - Sunday, 12pm - 5pm
