Hillier Garden Centres and the Syon Park Estate (Syon Park) have announced the Spring 2021 opening of Hillier Syon Park. Hillier will work with the Estate to transform the garden centre with both businesses investing significantly to improve the site.

Through this new centre, Hillier looks forward to being part of the local community, sharing the company’s passion for plants, offering gardening expertise and becoming a friendly destination for people to meet, eat and be inspired. This acquisition will also create a number of jobs locally.

#OnThisDay in 1642, The Battle of Brentford took place. It was a small pitched battle during the First English Civil War between a detachment of the Royalist Army (predominantly horse with one regiment of Welsh foot) under the command of Prince Rupert and two infantry regiments of Parliamentarians with some horse in support.

Algernon, the 10th Earl of Northumberland, was Lord High Admiral and President of the Council of War under King Charles I. He held back from full commitment to the Royalist cause in the early days of the Civil War and so lost his commands. Yet the war came close to his home at the Battle of Brentford on 12th November 1642, as Parliamentarian forces attempted to stop the king’s march on London. The Royalist general, Prince Rupert, made Syon House his headquarters during the battle, and there was a heated exchange of fire with several ships and barges on the river and repairs subsequently had to be made to the house ‘where it was shot through with ordnance’. The Parliamentarian forces were outnumbered and retreated to the river where some were drowned and others, including the radical John Lilburne, were forced to surrender. The victorious Royalist troops ransacked the houses and taverns of Brentford but their march on London was halted the following day by a parliamentarian army at Turnham Green.

Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, was born #onthisday in 1341. Living to the age of 66, the 1st Earl played an important role in many national events in his lifetime - his part in the deposing of Richard II, and his rebellion against Richard's replacement Henry IV, were included in William Shakespeare's history plays.

On this day each year, we remember those who died in conflict.

2020 marks the 80th anniversary of the death in action of Henry Percy, 9th Duke of Northumberland, who was serving with the Grenadier Guards during the retreat in 1940, he was just 27 years old. During heavy fighting, the Duke helped to drag the wounded out of immediate danger, but he was then killed advancing on enemy positions waving on his troops.

It's Bonfire Night!

#OnThisDay in 1605, Guy Fawkes was found in the undercroft beneath the House of Lords, with 36 barrels of gunpowder, enough to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

The day before, Henry, the 9th Earl of Northumberland dined at Syon House with his distant cousin, Thomas Percy. Thomas was one of the gunpowder plotters.

Once the plot was foiled, the Earl was arrested because of his association with Thomas Percy and the meeting at Syon before the plot. He was fined £30,000 and imprisoned in the Tower of London for 15 years.

In the light of the latest government announcement, the Syon Park Gardens will remain open and will welcome visitors for exercise and relaxation on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday 6th November to Sunday 20th December. Please note that this is subject to any changes in Government guidance or rules.

We have installed a series of measures to enhance the safety of visitors and staff, including circulation routes, social distancing, and enhanced cleaning. The Visitor Centre giftshop, Syon House and the Great Conservatory will be closed in line with government guidelines.

Please be aware that new restrictions from the government apply to visitors in outdoor locations like Syon. You must not enter if you are self-isolating or if you have symptoms of Covid-19.

The ghostly housekeeper took the children on a tour of the house, while telling gruesome histories and real staff stories. We look forward to welcoming tour groups back to Syon House soon.

We are really looking forward to our two Classical Club children's concerts this half term week, filmed at the beautiful Great Conservatory at Syon House. LMP presents Roald Dahl's Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs, set to music by Paul Patterson, and narrated by Polly Ives – who introduces the concerts here. Lots of fun for the youngest music lovers (and grown ups too!).

Little Red Riding Hood goes live at 10am on Thursday 29 October

From today until Sunday 1st November, we have our Creepy Syon Conservatory Trail. This family friendly activity gets children to help the 9th 'Wizard Earl' of Northumberland with his spell to remove a ghost. There are tiny pumpkins in each part of the Great Conservatory. Each pumpkin patch spells a word, but the letters are jumbled up so you need to work out what the spooky word is.

This is a touch free activity, abiding to our one-way route through the conservatory. The Halloween activity is included in the garden admission fee and two children go free per paying adult during the school holidays. The Gardens are open from Wednesday to Sunday between 10.30am and 4.30pm (last entry 3.30pm). For more information about this activity or visiting Syon Park, please email: [email protected]

Today is #InternationalArtistDay which celebrates the contribution that artists have made and continue to make to society. Syon House’s art collection features an array of different artists, such as Sir Peter Lely and Gilbert Stuart.

We would like to highlight the artist Philip De László, who was an Anglo-Hungarian painter. He was a guest of the 8th Duchess of Northumberland, and he painted portraits of various members of the family.

Pictured is Earl Percy (Lord Warkworth), aged 4, by de László. He became the 9th Duke of Northumberland in 1930. During the Second World War, the Duke offered a wing of Syon House as accommodation for Guards officers, one of whom recalled:

‘George Northumberland kindly opened a wing of his house at Sion. There we were to live in the greatest elegance – but in great discomfort from the intense cold.’

The Duke was killed in action in Northern France at the age of 29, fighting a rearguard action with the Grenadier Guards during the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940.

The De László painting now hangs on the bedroom landing of Syon House.

Clockwork Cycles

At last we can confirm that we will have a pop-up gazebo at Syon Park TW8 8JF next to Birdies Cafe, where the old Garden Centre used to be, starting this Saturday 12th September from 11-3 plus the other dates on the poster. We will be giving any bicycle that comes our way a 30 minute bike health check. Replacing brake pads, indexing gears, tightening headset bearings etc. Please come and see us.

Last on our virtual House tour is the Duchess of Kent’s Bedroom.

As you will see the Duchess’s bedroom is rather more opulent than her daughter’s, the then Princess Victoria. Victoria’s mother was a determined force in her life and often a cause of unhappiness in the young princess’s childhood; yet letter’s found at Frogmore House after the Duchess’s death in 1861 showed the depth of a mother’s love for her daughter. Queen Victoria mourned her greatly, and in the future blamed her unhappy childhood and difficulties with her mother, on the interference of Sir John Conroy and her governess Louise Lehzen.

P. S. Did you know that Frogmore Cottage in the grounds of Frogmore House was briefly home to Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex?

As we continue along the bedroom landing we reach the east wing which contains the principle suite of State bedrooms, furnished by Robert Hughes in 1832 for the use of young Princess Victoria and her mother, the Duchess of Kent.

Charlotte Florentia, the 3rd Duchess, was the official governess of the young Princess Victoria, who regularly stayed at Syon.

From all accounts Princess Victoria got along very well with the Duchess, unlike her mother whose overbearing ways and Kensington System (a very strict set of rules set by her mother and her aid Sir John Conroy) Victoria found very difficult indeed.
