Enchanted Woodland tickets are on sale now! ✨

Come for a walk in the Park, in the Dark…

As the nights draw in, Syon Park once again hosts the Enchanted Woodland, which sees the 600-year-old gardens transformed by a display of lights and music.

Now in its 14th year the trail winds through the arboretum, passing the sixteenth century Syon House, and ends at the spectacular Great Conservatory.

An array of lighting effects – from high-tech lasers to low tech candles – illuminate the visitor’s way through the trees. The event is put together by a team of lighting designers and Syon staff so you can even ask them about the trees!

Open for three weekends in November, this is an event you will not want to miss!

#OnThisDay in 1609, Thomas Harriot mapped the moon through a telescope in the grounds of Syon Park. πŸŒ•βοΈπŸͺ

Thomas Harriot was the greatest English mathematician and astronomer of his time. He had been a long-time acquaintance of Sir Walter Raleigh, through whose influence he had become a pensioner of the 9th Earl of Northumberland. Harriot moved to a house at Syon, and it was here at 9 am on July 26th 1609, that he became the first person to map the moon, using a simple telescope.

He turned the telescope on the moon and marvelled at its rugged, cratered surface. The drawing he made that night is the oldest known depiction of a celestial object as seen through a telescope, beating Galileo by four months. He also went on to make notable observations such as sunspots, the satellites surrounding Jupiter, and the planet Mercury.

Syon Honey, made by the bees here at syon, is back in stock in our Visitor Centre! 🐝

It is suggested that local honey is great for:

Β· Healing properties - Add it to hot water and lemon to soothe a sore throat. Because it has antimicrobial properties, it can also kill certain bacteria.

Β· Allergies - Local, raw honey helps with seasonal allergies

Β· Immune system - honey also contains bee pollen and bee propolis, which boosts the immune system

Plus it tastes great! Use it on toast, in baking, cocktails, marinades, salad dressings!

Β£9.99 for 384g jar

Visitor Centre is open Wednesdays to Sunday’s 10.30am to 5.00pm so pop in and grab some - while stocks last!

Today is the feast day of St. Bridget of Sweden, the patroness of Europe.

St. Birgitta (Bridget) was the only woman ever to found a religious order, which spread swiftly throughout Europe, with monasteries from Scandinavia right through Europe down to Italy.

The great Abbey at Syon was the only Bridgettine house in England. The foundation stone was laid by Henry V in 1415, and in little more than a century of existence it reached a position of unique influence and importance, with especially close links to the Tudor dynasty.

The Bridgettines were a reforming order who placed great value on austerity and scholarship and Syon Abbey became a great centre of scholarship, with a very fine library. It was a joint community of nuns and priests and a major site of pilgrimage, where huge congregations would take mass and listen to sermons in English.

Recent archaeological exploration has identified the location of the huge Abbey church as under the meadows between Syon House and the Thames, surrounded by cloisters and outbuildings. A series of courtyards stood on the site of the front lawn of Syon House, large enough to accommodate the considerable numbers of pilgrims who gathered on feast days to take mass and listen to sermons of the priests of Syon.
