Happy Birthday to our workhorse D5314! 62 years ago today she was completed by BRCW in Birmingham. The loco was noted at Doncaster for acceptance trials on February the 6th 1959. It was then delivered to Hornsey shed where it regularly would have been rubbing shoulders with big LNER Pacific’s on a regular basis! In 1960 the loco moved to Scotland where it would see out the rest of its career with British railways being based at Eastfield , Haymarket and Inverness. It was withdrawn from service in 1992 and secured for preservation in 1994, it has been in service ever since.
Fair to say she’s earned her bus pass!

Brechin Canopy Update!

With each day that passes, we are getting closer to our target! Thanks to your generosity, our fundraiser now stands at £4,527.37 of the additional £10,000 needed to help us secure this project's future.

A massive thank you to everyone that has donated so far. We are getting closer every day to making this project a reality but we can’t do it without your help!

If you would like to help us rebuild the canopy, please consider donating to the project - https://caledonianrailway.com/brechin-canopy-project

27er out again today. Nice weather for it.

The P-Way volunteers were out again today continuing with this season's project, replacing sections of lineside drainage at Magdalen cutting and installing catch pits to simplify future maintenance.

A great capture by Karen!

We know everyone’s strapped for cash in this crazy time and all nearly all heritage railways have had the begging bowl out, but please consider donating a few quid to this appeal so we can see a Type 2 under the Brechin canopy again!

Wow! We have had an amazing response to our fundraiser for reinstating the canopy at Brechin station!

Thank you so much to those who have donated so far. We still have a long way to go to reach our goal - we can't do this without you!

Please consider donating to our project to rebuild an iconic feature of Brechin station - https://caledonianrailway.com/brechin-canopy-project

Today's photo from the archive shows an unidentified Class 26 diesel locomotive ready to depart Platform 1 with a short goods train. The canopy as we intend to rebuild it is shown in the background. We do not have an exact date for this photograph but believe it is around the late 60's/early 70's.

Dear all , please go and support our friends at Kerrs miniature railway for one last time this weekend. This is the last time you will be able experience this great little journey on the Scottish East coast. We wish John and the Railway all the best for the weekend

Great for the railway to be in the news! Featuring our gorgeous D5314😍

In the news!

Although the railway is closed to the public, the volunteers are still working away in the background. Last week, the railway featured on STV News showcasing the volunteer refresher weekend and the lengths we are going to to ensure that the railway is in a good and safe position to be able to reopen when the time comes.

Today the sound of a Sulzer 6LDA returned to Strathmore. Volunteer refresher trains were operating. We hope to welcome everyone back as soon as it’s safe and practical to do so.

We're all shocked and saddened to hear of the incident near Stonehaven today. Our thoughts are with everyone involved, their families and their colleagues in the railway family. We have huge respect for the emergency services who are doing their job in very difficult circumstances today.

Caledonian Railway

We regret to inform our visitors, volunteers and supporters that the railway will remain closed for the rest of our planned summer operating season. With recent spikes in Covid-19 cases, it is not safe for the railway to reopen to the public at this time.

Caledonian Railway apologises for any inconvenience caused by this decision, however, the health and wellbeing of our visitors and volunteers is our top priority. Customers that have purchased tickets for the remaining services will be contacted in due course and refunds issued.

During this time of extended closure, we again ask that all members of the public please stay away from railway property. This includes walking along the railway line - it is not safe and you could be fined for trespassing. Please stay off the railway tracks!

COVID-19 UPDATE

With the Caledonian Railway now confirming the cancelling of all services up to and including the 30th of August we can confirm that there will be no diesel services until that date. Unfortunately this also includes our Diesel Running weekend on the 8/9th of August. Although expected it is still disappointing for us as we really enjoy running these events for the public. Trust us we miss them as much as you!

We also must reiterate that although the site is closed for the public, vital engineering trains may still be running at any time to reassure we can return to service as smoothly as possible. Please DO NOT TRESPASS on the railway. The site is covered by CCTV.

Stay safe everyone
Team CRDG

We cannot stress this enough KEEP OFF THE TRACKS. Vital trains are running to keep the railway operational . There’s only one winner and it’s NOT you

#volunteersweek

We’d like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to our frankly amazing team of volunteers of all ages who help to keep our historic fleet of diesels running up Strathmore. No job is too hard for this motley crew!

We’ve been established at the Caledonian Railway since 1992 with our trusty 27024 being the first Mainline locomotive in service by 1994 just two years after it arrived from the Northampton and Lamport railway in a derelict condition! We are proud to be a part of the “Queens Award” winning Caledonian Railway!

If you are interested in helping out in this team after all of this please email Kirsty at [email protected] or send us a message on this page

We have some good things planned for after all of this, but for now please continue to keep away from the railway tracks as trains may continue to run for critical maintenance and engineering purpsoes at any time. Please keep following government advice and we hope everyone is staying safe

Covid-19 Update from the Caledonian Railway

“Further to our last update, the Caledonian Railway regret to advise all volunteers, supporters and visitors that the closure of the railway has been extended to Sunday 2nd August. All train services up to and including this date have been cancelled.

We are saddened that we have had to make this decision, however, the health and well being of our visitors and volunteers is our top priority. Customers that have purchased tickets for the affected services will be contacted in due course and refunds issued.

During this time of extended closure, we again ask that all members of the public please continue stay away from the railway. Walking along the railway line is not safe and is trespassing - any offenders found will be reported to the relevant authorities. Our sites are monitored 24/7 with CCTV systems.

We thank you all for your patience during this time. We are continually reviewing the situation and taking steps to ensure we are prepared to reopen when the time comes.

Please continue to keep up-to-date with the railway during this time through our social media outlets and website.”

Trust us we are missing the locos like mad. We’re sure everyone won’t be feeling 100% right now so here’s a picture of one of our volunteers starting his modelling career, he might need some new clothes and a haircut first though...

37097 first start 2nd attempt

We’re sure that everyone is feeling the withdrawal symptoms as bad as us! Here something to help ease them from 11 years ago in April 2009! 37097’s first start after having a couple of piston swaps and being out of service since 2007.
Would you like us to revive our diesel group YouTube channel again? Let us know ,The volunteers will have some cracking videos to upload to it!
We hope everyone’s keeping safe and following government advice. We’ll see you all soon!

The Gin Bothy

It’s that time of year again. We are delighted to welcome back The Gin Bothy team and all their wonder local Gins for the Take the Sloe Train event. This will be the third year in a row it has ran and we hope it’s as successful as the last! Tickets for this event sell out fast so grab them while you can, come along and have a lovely local gin while being hauled by the wonderful Sulzer soundtrack. Now doesn’t that sound nice .

https://caledonianrailway.com/events/12

We look forward to seeing you!

All aboard the sloe train! This Saturday we take to the rails for another gin tasting event in conjunction with Caledonian Railways.

This sell-out event is a very special experience. Guests travel through the Angus Countryside on board a heritage diesel hauled train whilst sampling a selection of our premium spirits.
