Exciting news from our Environmental Commission Artist Andy Hughes: his film Shimmer is being screened online until 16 January at VRAL, part of the Milan Machinima Festival.

The screening includes an interview with Andy and Matteo Bittanti and is available to view at https://milanmachinimafestival.org/vral-screening

The film blends photography, archival footage, and video game imagery to explore pollution and climate change. It opens with scenes of a virtual planet, Devon’s River Torridge, and the video game Cyberpunk2077 Night City riverbank.

Don't miss the final week of Jason Wason: A Journey through Clay and Culture.

Wason spent his formative years travelling throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia, and later worked at the Leach Pottery in Cornwall, where he refined his craft. He became a master of form and technique within the Leach legacy, fusing traditional craftmanship with his own creative, sculptural style. His works, which are frequently enormous in scale, often allude to ceremonial artefacts.

Jason Wason: A Journey through Clay and Culture runs until 13 January.

Thanks to funding from Arts Council England we are starting work to upgrade our toilet facilities. The new design will feature four individual cubicles that can be used by anyone, which will improve accessibility for people with young children, disabilities or extra support needs.

The work begins on Monday and will last for approximately six weeks.

During this time we will have temporary toilets, including accessible and baby change facilities, situated outside our building for use during opening hours. These have been supplied by Exmoor Luxury Loos.

The toilet refurbishment work will be carried out by North Devon Bathrooms & Heating Ltd, with Bideford-based Windows Direct replacing the windows to improve energy efficiency.

If you are planning a visit and would like more details about the temporary facilities please do call us on 01237 471455 or email [email protected]

If you are planning a visit to The Burton please note that we are trialling new opening hours from 6 January.

Monday: Closed (Café du Parc open as normal)
Tuesday to Saturday: 10am–5pm
Sunday: 11am–4pm

This change will allow us to better align with busy visitor times, giving us an opportunity to explore new programmes for families after school and for groups who need a quieter setting for their visit.

We will be monitoring how the trial goes through 2025 and welcome visitor feedback.

Café du Parc will remain open on Mondays, offering drinks, cakes and a lunch menu.

Thank you to everyone who entered the raffle at the recent Friends Annual Open Exhibition. The winner was Helen Sheard, who won a watercolour by renowned Bideford artist James Paterson.

As a teenager Helen attended art classes taught by James Paterson and is a huge fan of his work. She is a friend of his son Rob (who created the beautiful stained glass window in The Burton in memory of his father) and his daughter-in-law Rachel, and has frequently helped them look after his great-grandson Edward.
So the prize is going to a good home where it will be well-loved!

Thank you to The Friends of The Burton for organising. For more details about The Friends see https://www.burtonartgallery.co.uk/become-a-friend-of-the-burton/

If you're looking for a book for an art lover, our Learning and Engagement Manager Carole recommends 'Ritual Ecstasy of the Modern' by Yinka Shonibare CBE, whose exhibition Modern Spiritual took place at The Burton earlier this year.

"We have so many fantastic books at The Burton,” says Carole. "This one is especially beautiful, with the brightly coloured tactile cloth cover and the wonderful reproductions of Yinka’s prints inside. It also has a fascinating interview with the artist where he talks about his processes and inspirations."

Don't forget we are open until 4pm on Christmas Eve for all your last-minute shopping needs! 🎁

One person who's going to be disappointed on Christmas morning is Kath, our Finance Officer. She has fallen in love with this pig in our current Friends exhibition but sadly it has already been snapped up.

'Pork' by Dawn Drew will be off to its new home when the exhibition closes this weekend. But there are still some beautiful artworks remaining that would make a unique Christmas gift. Come and fall in love with something special ❤
