‘My mother desires me to tell you that I am a very good housekeeper, which I have no reluctance in doing, because I really think it my peculiar excellence, and for this reason – I always take care to provide such things as please my own appetite, which I consider as the chief merit in housekeeping.’

📢 We’re excited to announce the last project of this year’s REIMAGINE RESIDENTS, from Laboni Islam.

📝 Born in Canada to Bangladeshi parents, Laboni is a poet, arts educator, and author of the poetry chapbooks Light Years (Baseline Press, 2022) and Trimming the Wick (ignitionpress, 2023).

🪡 Laboni’s project is inspired by the muslin shawl in our collection, believed to have been worked by Jane Austen. Through research and poetry, Laboni will trace one possible history of the shawl inspired by her Bangladeshi heritage.

It was here, in the Drawing Room at Jane Austen’s House, that Jane Austen first read aloud from a published copy of Pride and Prejudice, on 27 January 1813.

📖 Today, in a quiet moment, you too can read from our small copy of P&P in the Drawing Room, just as Jane did 210 years ago!

🪶 In a letter to her beloved sister Cassandra, Jane described how their neighbour, Miss Benn, had dined with them on the very day that the first copy of Pride & Prejudice had arrived. After dinner Jane and her mother ‘set fairly at it’ and read half of the first volume to her, without telling her that Jane was the author:

‘She was amused, poor soul! that she cd not help you know, with two such people to lead the way; but she really does seem to admire Elizabeth. I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know.’

🏡 Moments like these can still be felt within Jane Austen’s House and the village of Chawton, Hampshire, where she lived and wrote for the last eight years of her life. Even the house where Jane’s neighbour Miss Benn lived still stands!

The most treasured Austen site in the world

Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, Hampshire, is the country cottage where Jane Austen lived and wrote.

It was here that Jane’s genius flourished and where she wrote, revised and had published all her major works: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Jane lived at what is now Jane Austen’s House Museum for the last eight years of her life. She moved here in 1809 with her mother, sister Cassandra and friend Martha Lloyd. The cottage was owned by Jane’s brother Edward, who had been adopted by the wealthy Knight family and had since inherited the Chawton Estate. The cottage was offered to the women rent-free for life.

Today, Jane Austen’s House Museum is a Grade I listed building and one of the most important literary sites in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. The Museum holds an important collection of objects associated with Jane Austen, including letters written by Jane and personal effects belonging to her and her family. Particular highlights include her jewellery, first editions of her books, textiles and the table at which she wrote her much loved novels.
