The Iron Curtain Museum. A History of Life during the Cold War

The Iron Curtain Museum. A History of Life during the Cold War A history of the east and west during the Cold War. Lessons learned lessons not learned. I am building a cold war museum. to 1992 when the Berlin wall came down.

it is to document and report on the period from 1946 Winston Churchill's speech at Fulton Missouri on the 5th March. Plus I plan to look at the way Russia has developed since the fall and how it is slowly getting itself back to being a world power.

Goodbye to the man that very nearly instigated World War 3. Fidel Castro died today in 2016 aged 90.

He was a man of strong principles and was a very special man.

Not sure of Cuba benefitted or not from his adoption of communism but it has lasted for a long time.

The P1154.

In many terms so far ahead of it’s time even the RAF couldn’t see its future.

A supersonic VTOL aircraft is in many ways a misnomer. There seems little point having VTOL and being up front where the action is doesn’t quite flow. However sadly for the P1154 history says that the RAF wanted a true interceptor to stop the waves of USSR bombers that were expected to attack the UK.

And as is always the case you have the Navy and the RAF unable to agree much of anything and so it was doomed.

The RAF wanted the swing wings, it was the in option at the time F111, F14, MIg23. The phantom was about and the p1154 was looking more and more substandard in the world of fighters and interceptors.

Much has been said about the HS and BAC and the McDonnell Douglas Harrier.

But let me first say it started out as a French idea.

However the French solution was cumbersome heavy and inelegant and unlikely to work. A drawing got to our own Stanley Ho**er of “not much of an engineer” fame, of Bristol Aero Engines. He liked the idea and drew up a new design the BE 26. They the French man Wibault and the English engine Hordon Lewis (sorry I forgot to put his name) designer patented the idea for a vtol engine.

The engine got to Hawker Aircraft to look at building an airframe for the engine. It eventually made its way to a Ralph Hooper who can truly be called the father of the Harrier. It was he who took
On the task of designing and developing the p1127 ( the company project number of the time)

The harrier was on its way. The p1127 went from Michel Wibaults first ideas in 1956 to first flight of the P1127 XP831 in 1960. Just four years.

Interesting fact is that XP831 went supersonic in a shallow dive in the 12 December 1961.

What was the only ever sinking of a surface combat ship by a nuclear submarine. What ship was sunk and what submarine sunk it.

Anyone know what weapon was used by the submarine to sink said ship.

Bradley has worked so hard on getting this machine ready. Over the past couple of weeks I have tried to do my bit to help and move some things along and give Brad the moral support he needed.

He deserves a medal working 16 hour days.

Well done son. I am proud of you

Fitted a new alternator to the Kraz. But the alternator light was not going out. Resided it and it seemed to be charging but the alternator light was not going out. Traced the wires and it did not seem right. No positive to the charger light from the battery. Put that in and still wasn’t working. Switched it off and left it for two weeks. Came back and it’s working fine light goes out and all hunky dory. Am happy with that.

So Russia has lost 2400 confirmed modern ish tanks. Late Cold War 1990 to 2000 to current types. That leaves around 1000 active inventory tanks left. However they do have over 10000 older tanks still in reserve. T55/T62/T64/ and finally the most prevalent one the T72. We don’t think they have any reserve t80’s but they may have. No one can be sure.

In total some nearly 12000 military assets trucks tanks APC mobile artillery etc etc have been destroyed.

The war has however gone defensive and static. The Russians are dug in, heavily mined with anti tank and anti personnel mines. They are using old fashioned techniques of destroying a location then when everyone moves out calling it a victory. Tanks will also be in dug in defensive positions not so vulnerable or easy to find.

The fact is now Russia have basically turned the war into a long term slug fest. It will be hard to get the Russians out of their positions. The Ukrainians will have difficulty getting to the Russians due to the mines anti tank defended and other sssetts the Russians will have created.

Likely The only way forward is to get around their defensive positions and come at them from the rear. Using the Russians supply routes as a way of encircling them cutting off their supplies and getting them to surrender.

Frontal assaults will be bloody and hard work. Come on Ukraine get around them and close their supply routes and get them to surrender.

Our new business as Tanks4hire is growing steadily. We are very new and breaking into many new areas. It’s fascinating how much interest their is in hiring tanks or military machines.

However we now also have Locations4Hire and Props4Hire.

Our locations include 200 acres in Guildford 8 acre farm in Hampshire and woods in Godalming and houses and flats and character buildings. All available at a moments notice.

For the props we have very nearly 40 containers full of potential props for all kinds of events. We have just started documenting them. It’s a massive task.

The museum, by the nature of the period has a strong military aspect, showing much of the equipment that could would and was used throughout the period. But life still went on and the period from 1946 to 1991 is about people. I am very very keen to hear peoples stories, especially those who lived through the occupation of the eastern european countries...I have a questionnaire that helps people tell their stories. If any one wants one let me know...also people in BAOR, funny stories fun stories, hard stories. whatever if its of the period its what it was.
I am also very keen to find pictures as many as we can of the period, 1946 through to 1991, whatever you have let me know especially those in eastern europe...or simply home photos, where we lived etc etc...

Get in touch and let me know what you have...

These dropped in today.

We have to vacate the museum
Site this week ready for the car show. Then we will be laying out the vehicles relative to their era and to the Cold War chronological story. For instance Korean War, not a great deal of Korean War memorabilia yet, then Cuba, we have one of the first missile systems given to Castro, then we have Vietnam, again a few items some uniforms but can’t display those yet. Then there are historical
Events during the period, Aden, BAOR, we have historical items to add for all
Of these periods and much more. Sadly due to us being only allowed to display our stuff outdoors much of the longer term items that need to be indoors will stay hidden. But a plan is developing
