Rather than preserving the original, these processes gradually consume the image, producing loss, displacement, and material residues. Carrera approaches this erosion as a generative space, where new meanings emerge through the image’s continuous reconfiguration.

Sifting The Blue — Art Tonic 2026

The Language of the Mountain is a project that emerges from the observation and collection of materials that invite us to imagine the ebb and flow of the processes that shape the multiple eco-politics of materials. These materials are presented as overlapping and in contact with one another, forming a rhythmic and noisy composition that establishes a formal relationship with the landscape from which they originate. Based on these relationships, the project questions notions of development, modernity, and comfort by constructing landscapes of waste and remnants. The project employs objects found on-site, local materials, and photographs taken in the area. In particular, the pieces *Ixtle* and *Quiote* explore two ways of understanding life and death through the maguey, a plant native to Mexico that also grows in this region. Both pieces reflect on the processes of speculation and commodification of the maguey—understood as both a material and symbolic asset—and on the way this plant is integrated into contemporary real estate markets. By placing these relationships in dialogue with the landscape, they play with the symbolism of materialities and the tensions between the site’s ecological processes and the transformations of the territory.

Sifting The Blue — Art Tonic 2026

Created following the presentation of Sea of Love at the Philippine Pavilion of the 61st Venice Biennale, Sediment Paintings Tonic Series continues my exploration of the sea as a site of memory, labor, and material transformation. Developed during a five-week residency at Port Tonic Art Center on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the series responds to a landscape shaped by both natural processes and the maritime history of a former shipbuilding port. Comprising Intimate paintings, each work incorporates found materials gathered through daily walks, including stones, shells, driftwood, and other everyday fragments. Rather than illustrating the surrounding environment, these elements become physical records of encounter, embedded within the painted surface through successive layers of salt, soil, paint, acrylic medium and epoxy resin. The paintings accumulate like shorelines themselves, where traces of movement, erosion, labor, and time gradually settle into form. Accompanying the paintings is a series of sculptural floor works assembled from found coastal materials collected throughout the residency. Together, the works extend the language of Sea of Love into a quieter, more intimate register, where painting and sculpture become acts of gathering and sedimentation, allowing the landscape to persist as both material presence and lived experience.

Sifting the Blue begins with an act of attention. Blue becomes depth and distance, sea and sky, horizon and reflection: an unstable space in which forms emerge, disappear, and transform.
Developed during a residency at Port Tonic Art Center, the exhibition explores the landscape as both a natural environment and a site shaped by labour, movement, extraction, and memory. Fragments found within it—shells, stones, residues, discarded objects, and fading images—become traces connecting personal experience with ecological, political, and historical narratives.
Through distinct practices, Gabriele Carrera, Jon Cuyson, and Oscar Formacio approach images, materials, and landscapes as living processes rather than finished objects. Their works gather different forces, encounters, and temporalities, carrying Port Tonic not as a fixed representation, but as a network of traces, relations, and transformations.
