In 2015, Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei planned a large-scale LEGO installation for a political exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.
When Weiwei attempted to order the large quantity of LEGO bricks needed for the work, LEGO initially refused, citing a company policy against supplying bricks for political projects.
The decision quickly sparked controversy online. Supporters around the world began sending their own LEGO bricks to Weiwei, turning the rejected order into a global act of participation.
With the donated bricks, Weiwei was able to complete the massive floor mural, creating an artwork built not only from LEGO but from contributions sent by people around the world.
The controversy also led LEGO to reconsider its bulk-order policy, eventually removing the requirement for customers to explain what they intended to use large quantities of bricks for.
What started as a refusal to supply materials ultimately became part of the story of the artwork itself.
