After my first attempt at plique à jour enamelling (see previous post) I was contacted by a lovely friend asking if I were to do more whether I could do something in similar colours but larger. Of course, with my hungry enthusiasm for this new technique I was more than happy to see if I could do bigger 🤗

The jumping whale won hands down with the portrait coming in a definite last, "definitely not the portrait" one person said..... but in fact, that was my favourite, plus I thought it would be a good practice piece for using my painting enamels, so despite public opinion, I did it anyway 😝 and this is the result.
It's not perfect, some of the black paint just went a clay colour along the cloisonné wires, I don't know if that was because I overfired or under fired, I shall ask someone more in the know. But otherwise, I do like him. With a piece this size it's necessary to enamel the back too, often done with black, but I thought I'd see if you could do something just a little more interesting, I do love hidden detail.
With a bar across the back so it can be used as a scarf clip.

SOLD.

Enamel and fine silver on copper.

I had such a fantastic time in the workshop this morning. I thought I would try out an enamelling technique called plique à jour where the enamels are laid into cells without a backing thus creating a stained glass effect. And apart from a 'what a bloody idiot' moment on my first attempt it then went remarkably well. I'm sooo happy with them 🤗 typically there is no sun today so I can't get a great outside image 🤨
I have 3 more blank pairs made up, I think I'll be up extra early tomorrow I'm so excited to do some more 😍

Abstract drop earrings in shades of green (parrot, turquoise and leaf)
20mm drop, 8mm wide hanging on silver wire.

Now available in my etsy shop, follow link in bio. 🙂

When I posted back in June full of enthusiasm for making monthly I was unaware of the accumulative effects of looking after someone 24/7. Being someone who has always been a night owl, finding it easier to focus through the quiet hours of the night, I would say to myself, 'tonight, tonight I will go into the workshop', but by the end of the day I would flop into bed and sleep like the dead. Months went by, monthly challenges piled up and nothing creative was happening. Something had to change. Making jewellery, making anything is like therapy for me. So over the last month, and with the help of the clocks going back I slowly changed myself into an early bird, now rising around 5am and at the bench with cup of tea by 6. And the result, is my first ever pre-Christmas Etsy shop update 🤗🎄please take a look.

Find there my necklace for
June : letter V, plant.
Some perfectly wearable play/practice/seconds at reduced prices and, completely unheard of for me, some earrings.

August, letter S and September, letter L are on the bench. October, letter K, another plant and November D are still in the design stage, so, hopefully if things proceed well, more to follow.

But here, exclusively is July, letter B because Etsy have deactivated my listing due to prohibited items 😔 This piece contains a Bumblebee Jasper that is mined from volcanoes and contains sulphur and arsenic. But this stone is polished, is set in silver so does not touch the skin, and is safe to wear but I wouldn't recommend eating it.

Interesting fact about bees:
Communication in the bee world is a waggle dance! (That’s real.) When a forager bee finds a great food source, she returns to the hive and does a special dance to let her sisters know where to find it. The angle and duration of the dance convey important information about the location of the nectar. It’s like a choreographed routine that helps the whole hive stay informed.

Flying Bee necklace

Overflowing silver honey pot charm holds the hallmark and adds hidden detail.

Almost hunted to extinction, the Humpback Whale (Megaptera, meaning large winged) can now be found in healthy numbers throughout the world's oceans.
Swimming at a lazy 3-6 miles/hr they can travel 1000's of miles from their feeding ground to their breeding ground and often become active, breaching out of the water, slapping the surface with their fins and tails. A true gentle giant of the sea.

Not quite to deadline but here is the result of my 1st month of the . I'm not as happy with it as I'd hoped to be, due to its size and my need for better glasses I wasn't as confident as I should have been with the etched body stripes but though tempted to go over them again I knew it would just end up messier. But I do like how my lightbox studio has nicely created some good highlights and lowlights making it look rather dramatic.

Oxidised silver with grey moonstone. 25mm x 30mm

June challenge has been set. The letter V and it has to be a plant, watch this space 🤔

Sketching again 🙂
To keep me at the bench on a monthly basis but without too much stress, now that time is limited, I've decided to take part in originally just for felters (one of my other favourite crafts) but now open to anyone.
One letter and occasionally a rule are picked out of a hat, and you have a month to create an animal or something inspired by an animal that starts with that letter.
This is the 1st month, letter H, rule is monochrome. If you're interested in the challenge, go check out bibabopuppets.com for more information 🙂

So, I've chosen the Humpback Whale 🐋 I'm still playing with poses, but so far, these little sketches have got me thinking "ooh, I could" and "hmm, I wonder if that" which is what I enjoy most in the design process. But which one to develop? I haven't worked that out yet. I like the portrait, it would be a nice enamelling challenge. The jumping whale would lend itself nicely as a relief piece. The diving whale just has a lovely form. My overzealous brain says do all 3! But I know that leads to none finished, so choose I must. Do you have a favourite? 🤔
