Riikka Piippo | Flora I–III (2026), stoneware clay, matte and glossy glaze • As part of firstly our 3daysofdesign exhibition in Copenhagen, and now our summer exhibition At First Blush • Lokal Billnäs Satellite + www.lokalhelsinki.com

Riikka Piippo is a designer who works across a range of mediums, including ceramics, textiles, and accessories. She strives to create pieces that are both beautiful and durable, objects that can enrich our lives and endure over time. Piippo finds inspiration in the possibilities of clay, and enjoys the challenge of exploring textures and hues through experimenting with glazes. Her works are characterized by an earthy, harmonious expression that is both modern and timeless.

“I find the coiling technique to be an essential aspect of my practice as it keeps me closely connected to the clay, providing me with a deep understanding of its possibilities and limitations. I am fascinated by the versatile nature of clay as a medium – creating the vase can be a meditative process, while executing delicate, almost gravity-defying embellishments requires breathless concentration.”

Eija Koski | Viisaus on ulottuvilla (2026), Energian virta (2026), Hetkestä toiseen (2025), Muuntaja (2026), organic rye straw • As part of our summer exhibition At First Blush • Lokal Billnäs Satellite + www.lokalhelsinki.com

Koski, who lives in a farm near Vaasa, on the west coast of Finland, uses only organic rye from her own field to make her himmelis. She selects and hand cuts her own rye straws. Even though himmelis seem quite geometrical and architectural, many designers consider the himmeli more of a sculpture than an ornament. As a full-time himmelist, she travels round the world teaching courses, she has shown her work in innumerable exhibitions and her first book, Himmeli, is in its fifth printing. Her books are published in five languages.

“The quiet motion of a himmeli speaks to me in a language of mathematical beauty. A himmeli is like the Kalevala; it holds within it secrets if only one knows how to open its door.”

Aimo Katajamäki | Vaivainen (2024), Ratsastajapatsas (2026), Kadotus (2024), Jänis laukkaa (2026), Moikka( 2026) & Päällikköjänis (2026) • As part of our summer exhibition At First Blush • Lokal Billnäs Satellite + www.lokalhelsinki.com

Aimo Katajamäki is an artist, illustrator, and graphic designer. His typical techniques include wood carving, ceramics, and metal block printing. In recent years he has become renowned for his superhero wood sculptures, which depict human nature in a subtle and delicate way. His sculptures exude delightful, pitch-black comedy. They borrow their imagery from pop culture, the animal kingdom, and the afterlife. His skull characters, which have a human and frail aspect, highlight the importance of the here and now, and the transience of life. Katajamäki’s award-winning sculpture, “Wood People,” can be seen in the foyer of Little Parliament, Helsinki.

“In my work, I have been influenced a lot by popular culture. Although as a graphic artist and illustrator I have not drawn cartoons myself, very often the characters in my sculptures are familiar from the pages of comic books. Nature and animal subjects have also been very dear.
My art is characterised by a warm humour. Handcrafting, and the direct contact with different materials such as wood, ceramics and bronze, is important to me in my work. Contrary to the mainstream of contemporary art, my works do not aim to be societally opinionated.”

Lokal Galleria x Cover Story | At First Blush -satelliitti 2.7.–23.8.2026 • Bulevardi 17, Helsinki

– Hanni Koroma, sisustusarkkitehti

WHITE WALL | Réka Király: Plants on Paper  5.8.–30.8.2026 • Lokal Gallery + www.lokalhelsinki.com

“Green of the rosemary brings hope, meadowsweet takes the pain away, the black currant awakes the senses. Butterflies to please the eye, rabbits for the funny sounds. The works at this exhibition are recordings of my daily observations and thinking through making.
Enter gardens, where plants are depicting human emotions. Landscapes of minds. Filled with juicy imperfections, obscure connections, the gardens tell stories of lived lives. Awareness becomes resilience, fragility transforms into strength on paper, that speaks of the invisible pact between the eyes and hands.”

Király works on the border of imaginary and real, weaving lines between the lives of plants and our emotions. The recurring patterns in both create the cornerstones of her practice.
