Né à Alger en 1883, Henry Valensi est peintre, théoricien et grand voyageur. Il rêve de libérer la peinture du simple réel pour explorer quelque chose de plus vibrant.

En 1932, il fonde un mouvement qu'il baptise le musicalisme : pour lui, la peinture doit suivre les mêmes lois que la musique, traduisant rythme et mouvement à travers la couleur et la forme.

Born in Algiers in 1883, Henry Valensi was a painter, theorist and avid traveller. He dreamed of freeing painting from mere reality to explore something more vibrant.

In 1932, he founded a movement he called musicalism: for him, painting had to follow the same laws as music, translating rhythm and movement through colour and form.

New on view: Helen Frankenthaler’s Blue Form in a Scene (1961)

In 1952, Frankenthaler placed canvas onto the floor and poured turpentine-thinned oil paint directly onto the unstretched surface, creating a technique that became known as “stain painting.” The uneven rate of the paint’s absorption into the fabric creates the swaths of color you see here.

Frankenthaler once said, “I don’t start with a color order but find the color as I go.”
