EUROM. European Observatory on Memories

EUROM. European Observatory on Memories EUROM is a transnational network committed to the research of remembrance policies and the promotion of memorial initiatives The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) started in 2012 as a project driven by the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation with the support of the Europe for Citizens Program in the framwork of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission (EACEA).

Its main goal is to create a multidisciplinary and transnational network of memories to observe and analyze how memory policies are being developed in Europe and abroad. For that purpose, EUROM promotes interdisciplinary research and academic activities related to the construction of public memory, contributes to the analysis and management of the politics of memory, and influences in the right of citizens to use and interpret the memorial heritage.

Misión: EUROM’s network purpose is to analyze how collective memories have been addressed through 21st century public policies: the consequences of Nazism, Fascism and Stalinism; the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship; the vindication of civil rights in Northern Ireland; the pro-democratic movements in Eastern Europe during the Cold War; the resistance movements against dictatorships in Greece and Portugal; and the transitional processes in several European countries, as well as others. Similarly, the EUROM aims to act as a bridge between Europe and Latin America - where memorial policies have had a very significant presence in the political and social sphere in the past decades-, as well as countries that do not formally belong to the European Union but are part of Europe, such as Norway, the Balkans area countries and others.

Defining and commemorating the legacy of Robert Schuman, 70 years after the declaration that forged today’s Europe, is more than necessary. The EUROM. European Observatory on Memories publication ‘Schuman 70’ does it as a claim of the “idea of Europe”, a Europe that must not forget neither the collective nor the individual processes that shaped our free societies, our memories, and the democratic values of peace, solidarity and social justice. This special issue aims to contribute, in a critical and constructive way, to the debate about our common heritage and diverse past. Published on the occasion of Europe Day 2020, it has been extended and printed in a bilingual book (English and French) that is now available for download at https://europeanmemories.net/stories/schuman70/.

🕵️‍♂️ The publication includes an article by the professor Sylvain Schirmann (University of Strasbourg), contributions by Philippe Le Guen (Maison Jean Monnet - European Parliament) and Martí Grau (Maison Jean Monnet - European Parliament), and an interactive timeline that highlights the most relevant facts about Robert Schuman’s life.

Los historiadores que devolvieron la memoria a Companys: ocho décadas para reconstruir el fusilamiento de un president

#OTH 1940, the last Republican president of Catalonia, Lluís Companys, was executed by firing squad at the moat of Santa Eulàlia in the Castle of Montjuïc in Barcelona. Exiled in France after the #SpanishCivilWar, he was captured and handed over by the Gestapo to the Spanish State of Francisco Franco in the border city of Irún, Basque Country. As discovered by historian Jordi Guixé in his book "The persecuted Republic: Exile and repression in Franco's France, 1937-1951" (Publicacions Universitat de València), Companys was captured and interrogated in Paris by the agent Pedro Urraca with the collaboration of the Gestapo and the Vichy government. Guixé spent years investigating the persecution of the republican exile in France and found the report written by Urraca on the first interrogation of Lluís Companys after his arrest. The research reveals Franco's obsession with pursuing the losers of the Civil War beyond its borders.

The book covers unpublished passages of this history of persecutors and persecuted and explains Franco's spy network installed in France since 1937, unmasking secret agents such as Pedro Urraca Rendueles and Victor Druillet during their cooperative actions between Nazis, Francoists and French collaborators, and goes as far as the police operations of "witch hunts" against the Spanish communists in the late 1940s and early 1940s. Operations developed on French soil under Franco's auspices, revealing why Franco could perpetuate himself in power after having lost his dirty war in favor of the Nazi-fascist axis.

In an article published today at elDiario.es, Arturo Puente pays tribute to a whole tradition of Catalan researchers who worked to explain what happened 👇👇

Beyond the wall. 30th anniversary of the German Reunification

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the German reunification, a crucial turning point in the contemporary history of Europe and its unification process. To discuss the lights and shadows of the reunification process, the EUROM - Fundació Solidaritat UB and the Goethe-Institut Barcelona invited three German artists of the “post-wall generation” to share their memories and thoughts about the historical, social, and cultural contradictions that emerge from this commemoration.

The writer and screenwriter Stefanie Kremser will introduce her first documentary, Hin und Her (From Here to There), filmed between Munich and Berlin in 1989 and 1990 and co-directed by Margit Ruile. It portrays two moments in the lives of five anonymous people who had fled the GDR through interviews conducted shortly before and just after the demolition of the wall.

The screening will give rise to a conversation with solo guitar player Nora Buschmann, born and raised in the GDR, and actor Alex Brendemühl, whose father left the Eastern country in 1961. Continuing the collaboration that emerged from the show “All along the watchtower” (2019), they will close the meeting with a brief performance of music and poetry, a bit of food for thought.

With the support of Barcelona Cultura and Europe for Citizens

The act will be held in Spanish and will be broadcasted online: https://europeanmemories.net/videos/beyond-the-wall-live-streaming/

#cjbbalcans 🇭🇷 Tunel Grič was built as a bomb shelter and a promenade during the #secondworldwar. It felt in disuse until the 1990s, when hosted one of the first rave parties in Croatia, and was used again as a shelter during the #CroatianWar of Independence. Remodeled in 2016, the tunnel is now a shortcut linking different areas of the city center and a place for cultural events.
