EUROM. European Observatory on Memories

EUROM. European Observatory on Memories EUROM is a transnational network committed to the research of remembrance policies and the promotion of memorial initiatives The European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) started in 2012 as a project driven by the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation with the support of the Europe for Citizens Program in the framwork of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission (EACEA).

Its main goal is to create a multidisciplinary and transnational network of memories to observe and analyze how memory policies are being developed in Europe and abroad. For that purpose, EUROM promotes interdisciplinary research and academic activities related to the construction of public memory, contributes to the analysis and management of the politics of memory, and influences in the right of citizens to use and interpret the memorial heritage.

Misión: EUROM’s network purpose is to analyze how collective memories have been addressed through 21st century public policies: the consequences of Nazism, Fascism and Stalinism; the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship; the vindication of civil rights in Northern Ireland; the pro-democratic movements in Eastern Europe during the Cold War; the resistance movements against dictatorships in Greece and Portugal; and the transitional processes in several European countries, as well as others. Similarly, the EUROM aims to act as a bridge between Europe and Latin America - where memorial policies have had a very significant presence in the political and social sphere in the past decades-, as well as countries that do not formally belong to the European Union but are part of Europe, such as Norway, the Balkans area countries and others.

The fall of the Berlin wall epitomized the end of the Cold War and the beginning of a new era. A series of events happened over a very short period of time as the result of many political, economic, and military factors that culminated in the reunification of Germany in October 1990, and in the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The memorial performance "All along the watchtower" was presented last year in Berlin @zionskirche and in Barcelona @elbornccm in the framework of the commemorations of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is a collective exercise of memory made from the perspective of a heterogeneous group of artists whose lives were marked by those events. Far from the ostalgie, the show presents songs and poems of hope and disappointments becoming a reflection on the contradictions that came along with the changes. @norabuschmann @rexrex1975 @alexbrende @inesburdow @frank.diersch #RobertConrad #HerbstInPeking #TheSame @natalloreta

AP Interview: Barcelona Mayor Wants Columbus Statue Debate

"Jordi Guixé, professor of history of the @Universitat de Barcelona
and an expert in public memorials as director of the European Observatory of Memories (#EUROM), believes that Spain has not reckoned with its imperial past because its society is still painfully absorbed by its conflicting memories of its 1936-39 civil war.

Many Franco-era monuments and place names have been removed, but the debate still rages over what to do with the tens of thousands of civilian victim s of the war and the subsequent right-wing repression that still lie in mass graves. "

“The focus of collective memory is always drawn to the most recent trauma. There is a never-ending debate about the memory (…) of the Civil War,” Guixé said. “(The colonial period) has gone overlooked in our society, so how can a society react to something that it ignores?”

#Schuman70 👉 Professor Sylvain Schirman, The Jean Monnet Chair @universite_strasbourg 👁️‍🗨️ "The Schuman Plan was first and foremost, a response to a particular context. The proclamation of the People's Republic of China in October 1949, the independence movements on the Asian continente and the situation in Korea all bore witness to the spread of communism on a planetary scale. The Cold War had now spread to Germany, as the two German states competed with each other to be the embodiment of the bation: the Federal Republic was stablished on 8 May, 1949, and the Democratic Republic on 7 October of the same year."

Defining and commemorating the legacy of Robert Schuman, 70 years after the declaration that forged today’s Europe, is more than necessary. From the #EUROM Fundació Solidaritat UB we do it as a claim of the “idea of Europe”, a Europe full of challenges and crises, but also full of hope and opportunities that must not forget the collective nor the individual processes that shaped our free societies, our memories, and the democratic values of peace, solidarity and social justice. This special online issue aims to contribute, in a critical and constructive way, to the debate about our common and indeed diverse past.

Setzen wir gemeinsam ein Zeichen!
#Liberation1945
