Imam al-Layth ibn Sa‘d was one of the great Muslim scholars of the 2nd century AH. He was born in Qalqashandah, Egypt, in 94 AH (713 CE) and became the leading scholar and jurist of Egypt, founding his own independent school of Islamic jurisprudence. However, his school did not survive like the four major madhhabs, as much of his knowledge was lost after his students failed to preserve it. He was known for his vast knowledge and remarkable generosity—Imam al-Shafi‘i once said, “Al-Layth was more knowledgeable than Malik, but his followers did not preserve his knowledge.”
The Mosque and Mausoleum of Imam al-Layth ibn Sa‘d are located in the Imam al-Layth district in al-Qarafa al-Sughra (the Lesser Cemetery) in Cairo, near the Mosque of Imam al-Shafi‘i. The mosque houses his beautifully decorated shrine, topped by an ornate dome with traditional Arab motifs, and surrounded by a prayer area for visitors.
