This golden face was never meant to show King Psusennes I as he looked when he died.

After a reign of about 50 years, Psusennes I died as an old man. Yet his funerary mask presents him forever young, with an idealized face, a nemes headdress crowned by a uraeus cobra, and a finely braided false beard.

Look closely at the broad collar. It contains twelve rows of small narrow discs and three rows of leaves, petals and lotus flowers.

The mask itself was made from two sheets of embossed gold leaf, overlaid and secured together by five twin-shafted fasteners. The eyes, eyebrows and the straps of the false beard were inlaid.

More than the gold itself, it is the precision of the workmanship that makes this mask extraordinary.
