Every year on October 16, the world celebrates World Food Day, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to raise awareness of food security and hunger and to emphasize the importance of ensuring access to food for everyone.
On the occasion of World Food Day, we highlight one of the museum’s objects associated with the transportation and preservation of food in the royal palaces.« The Vegetable Carriage»
This carriage dates back to the reign of Khedive Abbas Hilmi II (1892–1914). It was used to transport vegetables and fruits and to provide the royal palace kitchens with their food supplies.
The carriage was specially designed for this purpose. Its interior was lined with tin, which helped preserve its contents and protect them from spoilage during transportation.
This carriage offers an insight into an aspect of daily life inside the royal palaces. It also shows that carriages were used for purposes beyond ceremonies and official processions, playing an important role in serving the palace kitchens and providing food supplies.
