Flexofold Flexofold develops, designs and manufacture low drag folding propellers for sailboats and multihull

With a fixed prop you'll most likely have to turn on the engine earlier than someone with a folding propeller.

How can that be? - Watch 'till the end

If you're still running a fixed propeller, that feeling isn't in your head.

A fixed prop drags through the water under sail, even in neutral. That means you need a decent breeze just to overcome that resistance before the boat even starts moving. You'll have to start the engine earlier than you'd like and earlier than someone with a folding propeller.

A folding propeller works differently.

With the blades folded together when the engine is off, there's almost nothing dragging through the water, so it takes far less wind to keep pressure in the sails.
More hours sailing, fewer hours motoring.

Key facts every sailor should know:

🔹 Reduced drag and higher speed
Folded blades present a smaller profile moving through the water, and our twisted blades allow water to flow around the surface and between them, increasing speed by up to 1.5 knots!

🔹 Better sailing performance
Hydrodynamic design delivers superior thrust ahead, in reverse, and when stopping. Carry your speed through every tack.

🔹 Driven by the laws of nature
Centrifugal force opens the blades when the engine starts, and water pressure folds them back as soon as it shuts off.

🔹 Easy maintenance
Descale, clean, polish, and replace the anode if needed. That's it!

🔹 Increased safety
Folded blades are less likely to snag old fishing lines, crab pots, and marine debris. In the worst-case scenario, caught debris can leave you without engine power.

🔹 Increased comfort on board
No noise under sail. Enjoy nature's own sounds instead of the growl of a spinning fixed prop.

We all have a responsibility to protect our beautiful oceans and the planet. Buying less to reduce overproduction means fewer CO2 emissions, which is one place to start.

Optimizing the production of long-lasting products is another place to start:

All the cooling water used during the production of our hubs and blades is filtered in our factory and reused for new manufacturing.

Our propellers are made from ALCARO, an aluminum multi-alloy bronze developed specifically for the marine industry. It's built for strength, durability, and performance, so it holds up in even the harshest conditions.

Let's dive deeper into how ALCARO stands out:

🔹 Corrosion Resistance
ALCARO forms a self-protecting layer when exposed to seawater. If that layer gets damaged, it regenerates on its own, keeping the propeller protected and extending its life.

🔹 Efficient to Produce
ALCARO is quick to shape by drawing or pressing with high precision, which keeps manufacturing costs down without cutting corners on quality. Shorter production times mean less energy used per propeller manufactured, which is better for the environment.

🔹 Strength & Reliability
ALCARO has strong tensile strength and holds up to thermal stress up to 400°C. It's highly resistant to erosion, cavitation, and general wear, which matters when you're putting real hours on the water.

🔹 Smooth Performance
Its low-friction properties let moving parts run smoothly, even under heavy loads and slow speeds, so there's less wear over time.

👉 A propeller that lasts longer and needs less maintenance isn't just good for you, it's fewer parts produced and replaced over time. That's the footprint we're talking about.

So: durability, performance, or sustainability? What matters most to you?

How to make sure the prop doesn't fall off (or parts of it)

4 key steps to be aware of:

👇 Saildrive:
1. Tighten the shaft nut to the specified torque (see the torque chart included with the installation guide)
2. Tighten the shaft nut locking screw to the specified torque
3. Bend the tab washer as shown in the manual (see slide 5). Only bending one side is NOT enough!
4. When reinstalling: apply Loctite® 243 to the tapered pivot pin locking screws, shaft nut locking screw, cover plate screws, and anode screw. Note: for best results clean the screws before applying Loctite®

👇 Shaft:
1. Degrease the taper before mounting
2. Tighten the shaft nut to the specified torque (see the torque chart included with the installation guide)
3. Tighten the shaft nut locking screw to the specified torque
4. When reinstalling: apply Loctite® 243 to the tapered pivot pin locking screws, cover plate screws and anode screw (But NOT the shaft nut locking screw). Note: for best results clean the screws before applying Loctite®

Folded blades create way less drag under sail.
That reduced drag increases your sailing speed by up to 15%, which on average means 1-1.5 knots more speed! Without even doing anything!

Side note:
You’ll save hours getting from A to B and even days if you cross the Atlantic.

Already have a Flexofold installed, and upgrading your engine?
Then it might be worth taking a look at your blades.

The prop needs to match the engine for optimal performance. The biggest, best engine on the market is useless if the prop behind it can't get that power into the water. A new engine sometimes means adjusting pitch or diameter to get the most out of it.

The good news: you might not need a whole new prop. Sometimes replacing only the blades is enough.

As always, we'll run the numbers to make sure everything fits, and we'll always point you toward the most cost-effective solution. In short: if you don't need a whole new prop, we won't try to sell you one, just the blades.
