NILS STÆRK is a contemporary art gallery with an international profile based in Copenhagen. Today, the gallery represents both upcoming, mid-career, and established national and international artists working across various media and genres, united by a conceptual narrative exploring current societal values and conflicts in today’s globalized society. Since its inception, NILS STÆRK has fostered gl

obal collaborations, particularly within the Central and Latin-American art scene, as well as with global art institutions, biennales, and galleries, creating new projects and opportunities with its represented artists and placing their work in significant art collections. The gallery has since its inception participated in several international art fairs such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Arco, Art Brussels, FIAC and ZsonaMaco. Initially located in a small gallery in the warehouse district at Islands Brygge, followed by a large space at Carlsberg Copenhagen, the gallery relocated to a 500 m2 former car workshop in the Northwest part of Copenhagen in the spring of 2017. This location still bears the mark of a raw, industrial aesthetic, a stark contrast to the gallery’s minimalistic interior designed by Henning Larsen Architects. In 2024, the gallery expanded with a second space in Copenhagen's city center, responding to increased interest in exhibitions featuring its artists. Situated on a bustling high street, this space intertwines its shows with the vibrant city through large, street-facing windows.

OPENING TODAY

Join us today for the opening of Violeta Maya’s solo exhibition, "Absoluto Estado de Proliferación", from 5 – 7 pm at Holbergsgade 19, Copenhagen.

Captivated by nature's continual process of creation, Violeta Maya explores the capacity of matter to sprout, multiply, and generate form. Across painting and sculpture, "Absoluto Estado de Proliferación" (Absolute State of Proliferation) unfolds through forms suspended between the botanical, the corporeal, and the geological.

Visit our website for more information about the exhibition.

We are pleased to present "Absoluto Estado de Proliferación", Violeta Maya’s first solo exhibition with NILS STÆRK, opening on August 21, 5–7 pm at Holbergsgade 19, Copenhagen.

What is it that compels matter to take form? In "Codex Seraphinianus" (1981), Luigi Serafini imagines a world in which plants, animals, and bodies exist in a constant state of transformation, resisting explanation as much as classification. Rather than offering a taxonomy of nature, Serafini proposes a universe in perpetual becoming. It is within this territory – where life exceeds definition and form remains in flux – that Violeta Maya situates "Absoluto Estado de Proliferación".

ON VIEW

"Humans", Olaf Breuning's solo exhibition at Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, is on view through 27 September 2026.

Bringing together many newly commissioned works, the exhibition explores what it means to be human today through Breuning's characteristic blend of humour, simplicity, and critical reflection. Addressing themes such as environmental responsibility, resource consumption, and artificial intelligence, "Humans" invites visitors to reflect on the complex relationship between people and the world they inhabit.

Among the works on view is 20 mm, a bronze monkey holding a 300-metre blue rope representing the 4.5-billion-year history of the Earth. The small golden tip marks the brief period of human existence, offering a poignant reflection on humanity's profound impact on the planet.

IN FOCUS

Carlos Amorales continues his investigation into language and abstraction in "Partituras para ocarinas por azar", a series of abstract collages based on a coded alphabet developed by the artist over the past decade and employed in various projects, including work presented at the 57th Venice Biennale.

Constructed from cut-paper shapes arranged like an unreadable text, the collages evoke secret messages or fragmented narratives. Built entirely from gradients rather than flat colors, the works generate shifting rhythms of movement and contrast while transforming fragmented forms into dense visual fields that suggest language, memory, and hidden meaning.

Lea Porsager’s solo exhibition “…and snEEzE” is on view at Simian, Copenhagen, through September 13, 2026.

Taking Simian’s subterranean architecture as its point of departure, “…and snEEzE” draws on the site’s cold, bunker-like atmosphere. Throughout the exhibition, displaced and transformed references to theoretical physics emerge, creating an environment in which scientific imaginaries and psychological states converge.

Developed through research in the ice core archive at the Niels Bohr Institute, the exhibition brings together polarized ice, empty beds, chakra wheels, and unrestrained thought experiments. Scientific material is transformed into an anarchic wasteland, where fractured time, dulled senses, and catatonic anxiety prevail.

“SUPERFLEX: Rainbows, Sponges, Flies, and Spoons” is on view at the MAK Center at the Schindler House in West Hollywood through September 13, 2026.

Designed by Austrian-American architect R.M. Schindler in 1922, the Schindler House was conceived as an experiment in communal living. Playing on this history, the exhibition presents distinct bodies of work, each occupying its own space: completely separate, yet strangely connected.

”The Spoons” (1994), an early photographic lightbox depicting a circular arrangement of spoons; “Hunga Tonga Rainbow” (2016), presenting two photographs in which a rainbow is mirrored, creating a sense of artificial symmetry – a false whole; “Proposal for the World’s Second-Tallest Building”, a sculptural installation in ceramic sponge proposing a new form of architecture; and “Two Flies Staring at Each Other (on a Glass of Water)” (2025), a meticulously fabricated sculptural vignette arranged in a perfect formation that would be nearly impossible to find in nature.

IN FOCUS

Lea Porsager’s work "FEMI HORN [MORE AND MORE GHOSTS CUM INTO THE VACUUM]" (2020) is on view as part of the current focus26 presentation in our gallery space at Glentevej 49 in Copenhagen.

The three-metre stainless-steel horn – takes its name from fermions, the class of particles that constitute matter, including neutrinos – the elusive “ghost particles” that pass almost undetected through the world around us – named after the physicist Enrico Fermi. The missing “r”, initially a typo, was retained, lending the work a playful and suggestive charge.

First presented in a restroom at Den Frie, Copenhagen, the sculpture emerged from Porsager’s self-described “horny phase”, where scientific terminology merges with erotic undertones. Acting as both transmitter and echo, the horn channels ghost particles through a convergence of humour, desire, and high-energy physics. The work brings together scientific inquiry and bodily desire, blurring the boundaries between fact, fiction, and speculation.

IN FOCUS

Carlos Amorales' "French Calendar Paintings, Thermidor" (2011) is currently on view at our gallery at Glentevej 49.

"French Calendar Paintings" is a series of twelve paintings that stems from "The Liquid Archive", a visual vocabulary of images that Amorales developed in the early 2000s and employed across animations, drawings, and installations.

The series marks an important shift in his practice, introducing an exploration of abstraction through the transformation of figurative imagery into an illegible visual language – a line of inquiry that would continue to shape many of his subsequent projects.
