In the mid-1960s, Mel Ramos developed his iconic style, depicting beautiful, flawless, and seductively n**e women alongside everyday consumer goods. Using a traditional painting technique, Ramos crafted a distinctive Pop Art aesthetic, initially showcased through cartoon heroines.
His artificial female figures shift between pin-up models, film stars, Californian beach beauties, and the girl next door, embodying familiar female archetypes. Ramos’s artistic reflections are both affirmative and playful. While he underscores the phenomenon of equating women with products, his protagonists confidently dominate the consumer world with their iconic femininity.

"To become a living example of the potential of art“ is the driving force behind Takashi Murakami’s work.
Murakami leverages his profound understanding of Western art to embed his creations within its framework, using ”Japanese-ness“ as a revolutionary tool in the art world. As an artist, he challenges the distinctions between East and West, past and present, and high art and popular culture.

Peter Halley’s art is rooted in Constructivist Colour Field Painting, with compositions that emphasize the relationship between predominantly rectangular forms and color fields. He enhances his repertoire by incorporating various color qualities and textures and by mixing sand or other particles into his paint, creating a three-dimensional relief effect.
Conceptually, Halley addresses contemporary semiotic systems and forms of communication, particularly digital code systems like the Internet and circuit diagrams. He views this technological structure as a prison of perception, referring to his geometric color fields as "prisons".
Through his bold color contrasts and cultural criticism, Halley fuses a striking aesthetic with profound intellectual depth, establishing him as one of the foremost abstract painters of his generation.

Mel Ramos‘ ”Superman“ is a quintessential example of his contribution to the Pop Art movement, characterized by the appropriation of commercial and popular culture imagery.
In this work, Ramos employs the visual language of comic books, with a superhero depicted in a dynamic, almost heroic pose, highlighting his status as a cultural symbol of strength and virtue.
”Superman“ can be seen as part of Ramos‘ broader critique of and engagement with the themes of commercialism, heroism, and the myth-making machinery of American culture. By elevating a comic book character to the status of fine art, Ramos challenges traditional distinctions between high and low art, urging viewers to reconsider the cultural significance of everyday media.
Today we are remembering the artist who was born on this day, July 24, 1935.

Known for his carved wooden figures, Stephan Balkenhol often leaves his sculptures partially painted and marked by chisel traces, giving them a raw, tactile quality.
The unicorn, a mythical creature symbolizing purity and grace, is rendered with a sense of grounded realism that contrasts its fantastical nature.
Balkenhol’s work invites viewers to explore the intersection between myth and reality, imbuing the unicorn with a contemporary relevance while maintaining its timeless mystique.
This sculpture, like much of Balkenhol’s oeuvre, challenges traditional perceptions and encourages a deeper contemplation of both the ordinary and the extraordinary.

🥂 Happy Birthday Franz Erhard Walther!
The German artist is born on this day, July 22, 1939.
Even though Franz Erhard Walther’s works, with their simplicity and reduced form, are reminiscent of Minimalism, the artist’s approach is different. He sees his objects as materials for work, which can be used to trigger fundamental experiences. By this, Walther means questions of self-definition, orientation, and the formation of consciousness.
When the artist married Johanna Friesz, a tailor’s daughter, in 1963, it profoundly influenced his artistic work. In the workshop of his in-laws, he encountered cotton fabrics, muslin inlays, and padded linings, which he immediately recognized as new materials for his creations.

Otto Piene’s abstract aesthetics and unconventional production methods signify a decisive shift in the treatment of canvas, pushing its material limits beyond traditional paint application. Consistently exploring themes of light, movement, and space, Piene began creating light ballets in 1959, drawing inspiration from elemental natural energies and incorporating smoke and fire into his works.
Fire, in particular, plays a central role in Piene’s artistic development, profoundly influencing the appearance of his creations. Through various manipulations, he introduces a new artistic vocabulary, with the creative process significantly driven by the unpredictability of fire.

In ”K-FRA FRA (Madria I)“, Georg Karl Pfahler directs the viewer’s attention to a centrally positioned red area, surrounded by three color fields: blue, green, and black. A yellow stripe closes off the right side of the green rectangle, while the black and blue fields, along with the red one, feature rounded edges on one side, revealing white 'empty‘ spaces.
Pfahler skillfully combines chosen colors with the non-colors black and white, creating a composition that juxtaposes light and dark, cold and warm, angular and round elements. This interplay results in a piece brimming with contrasts, conveying a unique presence and intensity.

Imi Knoebel, a master of abstraction, skillfully navigates the boundary between painting and sculpture in his creations. Even in smaller formats, his vibrant pieces captivate viewers and engage with the surrounding space.
Knoebel’s art consists of layers of individual elements, which he continuously reconfigures in novel ways. For him, the interplay of form, color, and materiality is essential not only to his own art but to the nature of art itself. Knoebel brings a playful lightness to the formal rigor of his influences, Russian Suprematist Kazimir Malevich and Dutch Constructivist Piet Mondrian.

Eduard Bargheer who died on this day, July 1, 1979, was a renowned German painter and printmaker celebrated for his distinctive blend of expressionism and abstraction. His body of work, especially the radiant, mosaic-like watercolors of the 1950s, showcases this artistic fusion.
During this period, Bargheer’s pieces are marked by the abstraction of motifs, woven into intricate, fabric-like compositions. For him, spatial perception shifted from being objective to becoming a dynamic interplay of color and light across the painting’s surface.

Sam Francis, who was born on this day, June 25, 1923, developed his distinctive style in the 1950s by blending elements of Action Painting and Color Field Painting from Abstract Expressionism with Tachisme and influences from Japanese art and calligraphy.
His paintings are characterized by their rich colors and spontaneous brushwork. Some of his pieces, with their minimalist and focused compositions, invite viewers to engage in quiet contemplation.
In the 1960s, Francis created a unique form of spontaneous and gestural Drip Painting, using circling and splashing movements to guide oil, acrylic paint, or watercolors across his canvases.
During the 1970s, his "Grid Pictures" featured surfaces covered in intricate, meshed structures.
Besides his work on canvas, Francis also explored other techniques such as lithography, etching, and monotyping.

💥 Remembering an Iconic Art Moment
The Wrapped Reichstag by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, depicted in this collage, stands as one of the world’s most significant and impressive public artworks.
Conceived in the early 1970s, the project faced over two decades of contentious debate before receiving approval from the German Bundestag in 1994.
The wrapping process, with over 100,000 square meters of silver fabric and 15 kilometers of blue rope, executed by 90 climbers and 120 workers, was integral to the artwork itself.
Displayed for two weeks, starting , June 24, 1995, this monumental installation captivated millions and remains a testament to the power of art in public spaces, symbolizing new beginnings, freedom and democracy, particularly in the context of Germany’s reunification.

Julius Bissier, who died on this day, June 18, 1965, developed a distinctive non-representational style of painting. Influenced by the calligraphy of Far Eastern brush painting and by his friendship with Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister, he was encouraged to fully embrace abstract painting.
During the 1930s, his work gained more recognition, and he began experimenting with tempera and ink on small formats, a hallmark of his style. From 1955 onward, Bissier focused on these small formats, known as ‚Miniaturen.‘
His later works, including the one presented here, are characterized by meditative qualities and minimalist forms. These pieces often explore themes of nature and spirituality, reflecting his interest in Zen Buddhism and Chinese calligraphy.

Lyonel Feininger was captivated by the diverse landscapes and meteorological phenomena of the sea. His significant engagement with the sea began during a period when he was transitioning away from the surreal figure paintings of his early career.
Feininger’s artistic fascination with the expansive and ever-changing Baltic Sea was sparked by his initial visit to the bay of Lübeck in 1921. Having grown up in New York near the harbor, Feininger had always been intrigued by boats and ships.
However, it was his first visit to the village of Deep in Pomerania, located at the mouth of the river Rega into the Baltic, that solidified his enduring interest in the sea and coastline.

George Rickey, born on this day, June 6, 1907, is recognized as a leading figure in kinetic art.
His monumental yet delicate stainless steel works are noted for their precise and laconic formal language. Rickey meticulously constructed bent or right-angled lines and planes, achieving a perfectly balanced relationship between them.
His sculptures possess a lightness that let the viewer forget that they were developed on the basis of a great technical knowledge. The elements of his work move with a sense of weightlessness, making every breath of air visible and highlighting the interplay of light and shadow. In Rickey’s mobiles, nature is transformed into art, while simultaneously contrasting with their technical and aesthetic environment.

“Game Byter”, Nam June Paik’s sculpture from 1994, belongs to a group of “robots” in which Paik created mostly anthropomorphic figures out of television screens, playback devices, furniture, cameras and other technical components. Paik not only juxtaposes tradition and modernity, nature and culture, he also shows how noticeably the individual’s and society’s perception of the world has changed and is influenced in general as a result of the media. The sculpture was created at the beginning of the golden age of music videos, when music channels such as VIVA and MTV started their triumph. Paik contrasts the traditional and essentially individual experience of music with the rapid development of those years, which led to the collective, even visual presence of popular music. Taking note of the current transformation in which a significant number of people experience their environment and communication only through the interface of their mobile phones, Nam June Paik’s critique of civilization in form of this “Cyborg”, consisting only of media receivers, seems almost painfully relevant. Today we are remembering the artist, who died on this day, January 29 in 2006. . Just arrived: Peter Halley’s new edition “Red, Nine Times”, 2023. The “Nine Times” edition features Halley’s hand-painted textured surface digitally rendered and reproduced using Halley’s signature fluorescent hues. . “I have always been fascinated by new digital technology. I always assumed it would someday be possible to reproduce the texture of paintings or other textured surfaces digitally. But when I first saw a sample of LITO’s realization of the surface of one of my paintings, I was stunned by the accuracy of the texture — as if the future had suddenly arrived. … The new editions are made up of a grid of nine rectangles, all of which have an identical surface created by digitally reproducing a single prototype. I wanted to draw attention to how a unique painterly surface can be infinitely repeated by this new digital technology.” Peter Halley . During the 1980s Peter Halley developed his signature vocabulary of geometric abstraction that has used in his work now for over forty years. A pictorial system of ‘prisons’, ‘cells’ and ‘conduits’ enabled him to produce diagrammatic paintings representing social subjects, such as the impact and legacies of urbanisation and industrialisation within a post-industrial society marked by technological change. . Artist Spotlight: Collin Sekajugo . Collin Sekajugo’s work is part of the group show “Impulse” on view @galerie_thomas through October 21. Born 1980 in Masaka, Uganda, Collin Sekajugo explores issues of social, cultural, economic and political identity in his work. The artist uses stock images, which he manipulates in painterly collages. The strong bond with his East African home country is of great importance to Sekajugo. This is not only revealed in very personal narratives, but also in the use of materials such as polypropylene bags, denim or other found objects that typically occur in his homeland communities. In 2022, works by Sekajugo and Acaye Kerunen were presented in the Ugandan National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, which received a special mention. . Artist Spotlight: Odili Donald Odita . Odili Donald Odita’s work is part of the group show “Impulse” on view @galerie_thomas through October 21. Odita describes his approach as follows: “The organisation and patterning in the paintings are of my own design. I continue to explore in the paintings a metaphoric ability to address the human condition through pattern, structure and design, as well as for its possibility to trigger memory. The colours I use are personal: they reflect the collection of visions from my travels locally and globally.” Having grown up in the USA as the son of African war refugees, Odita combines both Western and African influences. He is committed to Geometric Abstraction and sees himself primarily as a successor to black abstract artists from the 1970s and 1980s. His work can be found in renowned collections such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Art or the Pérez Art Museum, Miami. . Artist Spotlight: Matt Mullican . Matt Mullican’s work is part of the group show “Impulse” on view @galerie_thomas through October 21. „When I think, I think in pictures.“ Matt Mullican Representing the so-called „Pictures Generation“, Mullican processes images from the mass media in his attempt to conceive and visualise an order of the world. Exploring questions of reality, perception and projection, he has developed a complex system of signs, pictograms and images in his multimedia work, which reveals a wide diversity of materials including paintings and works on paper alongside digital art, installations and performances. The results can be purely abstract - like his „Untitled (Elements)“ - or feature figurative elements, such as the cartoon-inspired works presented in the exhibition. Following a cosmological approach, Mullican has conceived various categories of order to classify the world, each defined with different colours. Everything has a meaning and is symbolically charged. Mullican, who taught time-related media at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts until 2019, received the Possehl Prize for International Art in Lübeck in 2022. Since 1997, MoMA PS1 has presented a long-term installation by Mullican who participated in documenta three times. .
