Rebekka Benzenberg’s work "All the names" will be on view at Salon der Gegenwart opening on Friday in Hamburg.

Dr. Astrid Legge wrote about the series: "Benzenberg develops an appropriate visual language in her latest group of works, entitled ‘Brandbilder’, that are inspired by the subcultural aesthetics of nightclub toilets with their anonymous scribbles and graffiti. In these works, drawn in soot from cigarette lighters and candles, ghostly-looking images of women from art history and mythology come to light, images that have been etched into our collective memory to this day."

"In Warburgs body of work always dwells the wit. In Warburgs wit always dwells the discomfort. The discomfort is infinite, it resides in the Internet, in pop, in cinema, at the university and in Germany anyway. Everything is hard to bear, the past, the present, the future, this triad of transience which, even reading these words, evokes the repetitive boredom of human existence.“

Nicholas Warburg’s exhibition Titelbilder is now on view at the gallery.

Thanks to everyone who was there for the beautiful opening last week!

Hilka Dirks writes in her text about the show:

"Sentences written on the canvas with a rough brush are filling the format. Is the title the depiction or the depicted the title? Do the words become merely placeholders, blanks,
dummy text? Does the self-description become the motif? Do the images show themselves? Are they equally depiction and description of the piece? Is this the essence of self-reference?
While in the past it was mostly the content, it is now additionally the form that sets Warburg’s characteristically strong conceptual emphasis. The familiar motifs of Warburg—the old
Federal Republic, German Angst, America, the male genius, and, again and again, fascism—are still clearly recognizable, though they are now joined by new subjects.
The sticky, dusty shadows of West German baby boomers are no longer the center of reference: Warburg's new series of works has arrived in the framework of international '90s
millennials: Rebellion is a warm jacket – on sale, now also in your local mall. The evoked No Future!-feels have been commodities of the pop- and subcultural attention economy for a long time."

Come by and visit the exhibition from Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 6 pm.

Rebekka Benzenberg’s work "Too much future", 2020, is part of the exhibition "Dawn of Humanity" .

The exhibition “Dawn of Humanity. Art in Periods of Upheavel” presents works of art from the Kunstmuseum Bonn’s collection of classic modernism which were created during the first two decades of the twentieth century and are now entering into dialogue with contemporary artistic positions. Common to the works of both epochs is that they arose and continue to arise in an era of profound social, political and interpersonal crises, and that they depict and contemplate this experience: back then the countless lives changed by the impact of the Industrial Revolution; today the ongoing transformation of our social interconnections in a grim confrontation with climate change and the exhaustion of the resources of our world. The beginnings of both the 20th and 21st centuries are marked by wars and violent conflicts threatening our very existence as well as by issues of identity and self-determination.

Participating artists:

Nevin Aladağ, Francis Alÿs, Kader Attia, Yael Bartana, Rebekka Benzenberg, Monica Bonvicini, Andrea Bowers, Heinrich Campendonk, Louisa Clement, Max Ernst, Georg Herold, Franz M. Jansen, Alexej von Jawlensky, Käthe Kollwitz, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Max Liebermann, August Macke, Helmuth Macke, Goshka Macuga, Marie von Malachowski-Nauen, Carlo Mense, Zanele Muholi, Heinrich Nauen, Grace Ndiritu, Anys Reimann, Deborah Roberts, Daniel Scislowski, Paul Adolf Seehaus, Tschabalala Self, Monika Sosnowska, William Straube, Emma Talbot, Hans Thuar, Lawrence Weiner

The exhibition is on view until February 18th 2024.

"It is not a coincidence that the Dutch thinker Johan Huizinga published Homo Ludens in 1938 on the play element of culture, which forms the basis of game studies today. The play is where art and poetry are created; it is a territory of joy and resilience against the silences protecting various forms of oppression, imperialism, and colonialism. How may we transform silence into language and action, keeping the advice of Audre Lorde close to our hearts? Don’t play hide and seek, is often a request when communication between two humans is interrupted. What Sari suggests is not to play hide and seek with the world but to play hide and seek for joy, pleasure, and curiosity to make an equal world possible."

"Silence=Death (packed)“ is part of the exhibition Hide & Seek and belongs to a new group of works in which Dorian Sari deals with the famous project Silence=Death.

Övül Ö. Durmuşoğlu writes in her text on the exhibition:

The initial steps of the project "Silence = Death" highlight the equality and side-by-sideness of the pink triangle and the green circle. In 1986, Avram Finkelstein, Jorge Soccaras, Chris Lione, Charles Kreloff, Oliver Johnston, and Brian Howard’s AIDS consciousness mutual support group created the historical poster that used a pink triangle known for its association with the persecution of homosexuals in N**i Germany in the 1930s and 1940s against the societal and governmental blindness towards the AIDS pandemic. This blindness translates today into blindness towards the growing ecological crisis that demands long-term decisions and solutions for the planet and our co-habitation. Sari appropriates "Silent = Death" for the ecological crisis, creating a continuation between the different imperialisms and racisms we are trying to breathe within. The ripped-off surfaces Sari created slowly reveal the green circle, desiring to strengthen our consciousness for immediate, straight-forward actions. While we get lost in the games of human-to-human relationships, we risk losing the bigger picture.

"The photography installation series ‘The Itch is Back’ (2022–ongoing), present in the heart of ‘Hide and Seek’ with some freshly produced editions, is a good example of how the artist plays with the performative as an exercise of versatility in the visual economy of reproducing the self. They are their various ‘victim’ selves in these images. Yet they are also the ones that hit and crack the glass in front of them, hinting at how, as ‘homo ludens’, the playing human, we create the cyclical games with ourselves in the first place. In this parody, Sari portrays us as our own aggressors and victims before anyone else.

The game of aggressor and victim is only one of the games we intentionally or unintentionally choose to play. They feel the necessity to point their finger at the theatricality of a society built on such codes of individualism and identity. Without such an outing, it is almost impossible to move towards the gist of relationality and the desire hidden in the flesh of constant craving. "

Please join us tomorrow from 6-9 pm for the opening of Dorian Sari‘s exhibition Hide & Seek!

"We hide in order to be seeked. It is a desire as ancient as the fresco found in the volcano-buried city of Herculaneum showing three cupids at play, what was then called ‘apodidraskinda’. Children take a particular pleasure in hiding, not because they will be found in the end, but by the very act of hiding—of being concealed in a laundry basket or a cabinet, of curling up in the corner of a garden—to the point of almost disappearing. How smooth we go in hiding may become a dominant strategy for survival and self-protection in contemporary life, to hide the fragilities and vulnerabilities that make us humans who we are. Sometimes it is in that hiding that some of the most precious pieces of literature and poetry appear. How clever we get in seeking may signify a potential lust and curiosity for life, always looking for something and not afraid of being seen."

Let us introduce you to Dorian Sari, whose exhibition "Hide & Seek" opens on Friday at the gallery:

Dorian Sari born in 1989, in Izmir, Turkey. Studied Political Science and Languages, Greek literature at Paris Sorbonne University, Visual Art at HEAD Geneva, and Visual Art Institut Kunst Basel. They live and work in Basel and Geneva, Switzerland.
Dorian Sari is an observer of public reactions to contemporary politics and social movements. The main core of their work is looking into human beings, cultures and projecting them with personal and collective mythology into completely fictional, theatrical scenes, based on anthropological and psychoanalytical interpretation of humans and their symbols. They create a certain perspective for a certain period in their narrations. Mostly in the form of sculpture, video, and performance. Their goal is requestioning cultural norms and hierarchies.

Sari's work has recently been presented at; Musée d’Art Modern du Grand Duc Jean de Luxembourg, Luxembourg (2023); Kunsthalle Geneva, Switzerland (2022); Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2021); Gallery Öktem & Aykut, Turkey (2021). In 2021 their received the Manor Kunstpreis and in 2019 the Swiss Art Awards.
