UPCOMING EXHIBITION | Taste Is the Lack of Appetite – Hybrid Approaches to Architecture. 25 Years of GRAFT
“Taste Is the Lack of Appetite” is an exhibition on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of GRAFT and celebrates the curiosity for the special, the unique, and the unexpected. The internationally active architecture firm is known not only for individual forms and design, but also for its social engagement. For the team, the design practice is defined by optimism and a pleasure in experimentation – leading to the realisation of hybrid solutions for a wide range of challenges. The exhibition features a selection of residential, mixed-use and cultural buildings, each of which reflects the firm’s exemplary design strategies. In line with its multifaceted work, the show also sheds light on the topic of “Architecture Activism” and presents a prototype of the community-building “Solarkiosk”.

"Small-scale projects are very important for HPP as we learn from the details implemented. They can send a strong signal both internally and externally - even for the next generation", says Matthias Latzke, HPP Associate Partner, about their principle of Learning by Doing and the BOBK7 project for GEMA Immobilienverwaltung. Both are an outcome of their so-called Next Level Discourse, in which they discuss and develop (further) sustainable building strategies. Explore more about the Next Level Discourse in the exhibition Re/View the Next!

09/10/2023

With input from international design alliances and partners and with a trans-generational approach, HPP Architekten recently started the Next Level laboratory process, a series of four creative innovation labs to question and re-shaping the practice. The exhibition gives an insight into the labs, which focus both on the offices’ challenges in building culture and corporate strategy. Designs connected to this topic are the timber hybrid office building “Gema” in Berlin and “Knipex” in Wuppertal, the new construction of the company headquarters for KNIPEX, one of the world's leading manufacturers of pliers.

The "Trube-Becker-Haus" in Düsseldorf (picture), a centre for child protection and a drop-in centre for victims of (domestic) violence, is an example of HPP Architekten’s buildings in the field of urban resilience, which also includes the university hospital “Neue Medizinische Klinik des Universitätsklinikums Tübingen” (2032). Here, HPP, together with White Arkitekter, are combining healing environments for patients with an efficient working environment for the clinic's staff.

In Memoriam Zvi Hecker 1931–2023

I accompanied Zvi Hecker's work and his complex life as an outstanding architect, exceptional artist and great human being both professionally and as a friend since the early 1990s, when he decided to move from Tel Aviv to Berlin after winning the competition for the Heinz Galinski School.

For Zvi, the "so-called" final sketch was never the end of the design process, which caused some trouble during the construction phase but after completion brought him worldwide recognition, an exhibition at Aedes and a publication I edited at Wasmuth Publishers. During a lecture-tour through Israel, I was able to follow his architectural footsteps, such as the expressive town hall in Bat-Yam, reminiscent of crystals, the futuristic synagogue in the Negev desert and his meanwhile legendary residential spiral in Ramat-Gan, which, like all his architectures, defy any categorization in their powerful originality. And it is the same with Zvi's personality: his charismatic presence, his admirable intellectual independence and intransigence, his boundless creativity and, finally, his everyone-captivating charme.

When I asked Zvi what he would like to pass on to young architects, he replied that the knowledge acquired at universities is important and useful, as long as it leaves the freedom to forget this knowledge again in order to create something of one's own, "Forgetting and not knowing are not the same". All those who met and experienced Zvi Hecker will not forget him.

The mixed-use quarter AND Pastel (2018) in Istanbul is an untypical arrangement for Istanbul with an eight-storey perimeter block development to create individual neighbourhoods, whose design embodies individuality and separateness and thus encourages a particular quality of exchange between the residents and at the same time creates a protected atmosphere and green space within the busy city. Explore “AND Pastel” and the other newbuild quarter projects by HPP Architekten “Nanshan Stic” in Shenzhen and “Eclipse” in Düsseldorf in the exhibition.

Urban Transition is one of the six thematic fields, which HPP Architekten are addressing in their current and upcoming projects. The exhibition gives insight to the projects “Südliches Überseequartier” in Hamburg, “Four Frankfurt” in Frankfurt am Main and “Xujiahui Sportpark” in Shanghai. In the “Südliches Überseequartier” for example, HPP integrally master planned an innovative mixed-use quarter with spaces for retail, housing, offices, hotels, restaurants and entertainment on a former harbour wasteland area on the edge of the city.

For many decades, HPP Architekten has been a significant protagonist of German architecture. Founded by Helmut Hentrich who studied at Poelzig’s class in Berlin, the office has been involved giving expression to the architectural face of the Wirtschaftswunder, while some of their buildings being among the icons of post-war Germany. HPP was managed early on with varying partners and the studio today is headquartered in Düsseldorf with 12 other (inter)national offices. Its projects range from new and revitalised office high-rises like the iconic “Dreischeibenhaus” (1960) in Düsseldorf, housing, hotel, hospitals, sports and leisure facilities to buildings for culture, shopping, education and research or industry all around the world. Thus, HPP has influenced the architectural discourse internationally. As an extensive walk-through collage installation, the exhibition “Re/View the Next” presents a cross-section of the architectural spectrum of HPP from now and then, and reflects the continually evolving design practice within diverse spatial settings and cultural environments.

Our Story

The Architecture Forum Aedes has become one of the most successful institutions internationally for communicating architectural culture, urban design and similar topics. Aedes strives to focus public attention on the cultures of building and architecture and to present and convey architectural visions, sustainable urban concepts, urban planning and landscape architecture. In more than 350 exhibitions and catalogues in the typical Aedes format, renowned architects and current Pritzker-Award winners such as Zaha Hadid, Thom Mayne, Daniel Libeskind, Frank Gehry or Rem Koolhaas presented their work long before acquiring world fame. In addition to 10 to 16 exhibitions per year, the dialog with outside experts and an interested public is supported by simultaneous symposia, series of lectures and discussions. Aedes was founded in 1980 by Kristin Feireiss and Helga Retzer († 1984) in Berlin-Charlottenburg as the first private architecture gallery in Europe. In memoriam Kongresshalle Berlin was the title of the opening exhibition, which became a groundbreaking success. As one of its kind Aedes served as a prototypical model for many architecture-museums and similar institutions established later. In 1985 the architecture forum Aedes West moved to the S-Bahn vaults at Savignyplatz. In 1995, under the name of Aedes East, another branch was opened in Hackesche Höfe in Berlin-Mitte by Kristin Feireiss together with her partner Hans-Jürgen Commerell. In June 2006 Aedes moved to Pfefferberg, the grounds of a former brewery in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg.
