LAGE EGAL is a non-commercial project space co-founded and run by Berlin-based French artist and curator Pierre Granoux. Since 2010 LAGE EGAL exists as an artist's studio as well as a place to experiment with different forms of display in close collaboration with artists and guest curators. LAGE EGAL can be read identically from both sides, making it a perfect name for the space: Pierre Granoux al

The exhibition project GOOD GOOD HUMOR DAY ART will present a series of works by Asian artists based in Europa with cross-cultural life backgrounds. The selected works include a series of installations by Chinese artist YUQIU MAO; video works by Japanese artist RUI YAMAGUCHI; video works by Korean artist SOJIN KIM; and performances and workshops by another Chinese artist JIANZE ZHAO.

The exhibition uses the differences between Eastern and Western cultures as the source of inspiration, and explores the challenges of identity and confusion that Eastern artists living in foreign lands often face when they are culturally lost, and “humor” may be a way to break through this dilemma and allow wanderers to enter the exit of the world situation with a more comfortable attitude.

SEBASTIAN BURGER walks a fine line between representative and abstract painting. The starting point for his work consists of stylized imagery, often composed in a manner akin to collage, alternating precisely executed illusionism with two-dimensional representation. His work bears the influence of the legacy of surrealism and magic realism, as well as the metaphysical painting of Giorgio de Chirico. Furthermore his various methods to negotiate visual impressions by painterly processes that deal with deconstruction of display the paintings but also sampling and abstracting relations, tackle and empower the trial of translating an individual perception and expression.

(…)
JOLYON JONES’ sculptures are based on the dialectical tensions between opposites. Through processes of working on solid and permeable materials, Jones considers the physical limits of materials often chosen for their historic or economic uses. With “rapid loading”, concrete fabrications of furniture upholstering become objects that reflect matter often concealed behind walls. By creating multiples a relic of the former is produced, each revealing slight differentiations in the chemical signatures on their surfaces from the use of metal oxides, found within liquified earth after an earthquake. The typically load-bearing building materials, such as concrete and steel, become the supported elements, and the fragile elements exert the decisive force. By partially inverting the steel barricade, “container” interrogates the spatial confrontation between obstacle and viewer allowing bodies to breach the boundaries of the space it once contained.

SHINOH NAM was born in South Korea and lives and works in Berlin. He received a Meisterschüler Diploma from Monica Bonvicini at the Universität der Künste in Berlin (2022) and previously studied Fine Art and Architecture at the Kunstakademie. Nam explores ruins and their depths already inherent in the things that desire has achieved in a structure that seems solid. Through this process, the meaning of the norm is dismantled, and the subject can resist it and question the Absurdities and Dogmas that exist in society. In particular, Nam uses the relationship between intuitive forms and fragments to induce the viewers to subjectively contemplate the architecture or structures of inner selves closely linked to the individual’s cognitive process and self-understanding.

While historical conceptual art aimed to convert images into language, the work of PIETRO SANGUINETI reverses this process, once again transforming language into images. Sanguineti’s sculptural word-objects, or word-sculptures, digitally crafted and meticulously produced, defy the ‘conceptual’ label with their hyperbolic physicality. Their sensual “shaped canvases” result from technical production, featuring preexisting forms like letters, signs, logos, and words, which are laden with various meanings and interpretations.

The sculptures of BEN GREBER evoke the essence of everyday objects while transcending their original form, becoming autonomous works of art. Using materials like cardboard and epoxy resin, Greber captures the evolving environment, reflecting human impact on utilitarian landscapes through his mastery of form.

Concurently, we explore the themes of seriality and text with NADINE FECHT, reproduccibility and archiving with BEN GREBER and the traditional attributes of painting challenged by FRANZISKA REINBOTHE.

NADINE FECHT’s exploration of value concepts is epitomised in “surplus” (on-going since 2013). Arranged in a grid, price tags of cheap goods become a symbolic representation of the flow of goods and the struggle to transcend it. Each tag symbolizes an individual with inherent value, navigating the market’s network logic for exchange.

For our inaugural showcase at ART DÜSSELDORF, we pay tribute to the legacy of the late Italian-German artist PIETRO SANGUINETI by presenting a varied selection of his work spanning various periods. Concurrently, we present also works by the following artists, each exploring themes such as seriality and text (NADINE FECHT), reproduction and archiving (BEN GREBER) and the questioning of the traditional attributes of painting (FRANZISKA REINBOTHE).

Exciting news! Get ready for ORNAMENT UND VERBRECHEN’s seventh exhibition, featuring captivating textile works by JESSICA BUHLMANN and painting series by DAG. The two artists will also create an unique collaborative wall installation for the first time and at the special occasion of this exhibition.

Jessica Buhlmann’s textile works unfold in space like living structures. The spatial constructions consist of interwoven lines and organic nets borrowed from the study of plant structures, veins or maps. Struts tightly wrapped in fabric and coloured fields create views and insights and interweave the space in a painterly way.

DAG’s works are created in series. In the latest paintings, lines stagger, intersect, overlap, form alliances and dissonances, enticing the viewer to explore their own lights and shadows. They can represent anything: a fragment of an object, a hint of a shape, ghosts, niches, traces, or necessary clouds. “Subversion must create its own chiaroscuro” (Roland Barthes in “The Pleasure of the Text”, 1976).

The exhibition will be held in our temporary space at Strausberger Platz 19, nestled in one of architect Hermann Henselmann’s iconic neoclassical towers, the edifice is also known as ‘Haus des Kindes’ (Children’s House). Inspired by Adolf Loos’ provocative essay, this series of curatorial projects in the form of a duo exhibition challenges perceptions of ornamentation, inviting you to explore intriguing narratives of modernity and minimalism in today’s society.

♥︎ Our friend and artist Pietro Sanguineti left us far too soon last year, and we decided to celebrate his work for the first time, surrounded by a number of artists and close friends. His sculptures and word-plays reflect a benevolent energy that reminds us of the spiritual and playful illuminations of our past conversations.

We are pleased to present the sixth ORNAMENT UND VERBRECHEN exhibition, featuring a wide selection of works by artists who have accompanied LAGE EGAL this year or whom we have met recently. The series of exhibitions takes place at our temporary space at Strausberger Platz 19, located within one of the historic neoclassical Hermann Henselmann towers, also known as “Haus des Kindes”. The title of this series takes inspiration from the renowned essay by architectural theorist Adolf Loos, who asserted that ornament was a sign of decadence and violence in modern society.

The selected works compose again an unique landscape of objects and architectural elements that reflect the narratives of modernity and minimalism and the role they play in contemporary society. This prompts us to question our own conceptions of ornamentation and the underlying complexities of our built environment.

Our Story

LAGE EGAL was founded in 2010 in Berlin as a production and exhibition space. LAGE EGAL still regards itself as an experimental laboratory intent on tampering with the prevalent mechanisms of art presentation, mediation and marketing in a rather playful way. The project space is a non–profit artist–run–space mostly curated by the French conceptual artist Pierre Granoux since 2012; it offers continuously a professional ground for curatorial practice and critical exchange for selected artists and guest curators. Even though the designation ‘project space’ as such suggests a local constant, the concept of LAGE EGAL (‘location no matter’) is rather unattached to one specific location. LAGE EGAL is not only a play on words (LAGE read reversely is EGAL), it also describes exactly the process of a textual and programmatic dynamism where the location becomes irrelevant. The emphasis is on curatorial projects that scrutinize and reconsider the stature of exhibitions as such. Furthermore, LAGE EGAL distinguishes itself through its engagement with artists’ books, editions and multiples — and accordingly, with questions concerning the original, copy or reproduction.
