“Orientalism is a reconsideration of what for centuries has been considered an impassable gulf between East and West. My aim was not so much to eliminate differences – who can deny the constitutive character of national and cultural differences in human relations? – but to challenge the idea that differences necessarily entail hostility, a frozen and reified assembly of oppositional essences, and the entire polemical knowledge constructed on this basis. What I hoped for was a new way of reading the separations and conflicts that had provoked hostility, wars, and the assertion of imperialist control”.
Edward W. Said, “Orientalism: The European Representation of the Orient” (1978)
