BGI Group announced that the severe thalassemia gene therapy independently developed by its subsidiary Hemogen Therapeutic has been approved for implementation at West China Lecheng Hospital of Sichuan University in the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone.

The treatment cost has been reduced to RMB 1.2 million, or approximately USD 180,000, creating a more accessible pathway for patients living with severe thalassemia. Treated patients have the potential to end lifelong dependence on blood transfusions.

This milestone marks a new stage in the clinical application of BGI Group’s self-developed gene therapy and reflects our continued commitment to advancing innovative biomedical technologies for patients and families affected by serious inherited blood disorders.

New findings published in Nature offer a detailed view of how major human organs begin to form after gastrulation, including the heart, brain, eye, and kidney.

The study identifies candidate regulators of the embryonic heart’s natural pacemaker, refines the timeline of early brain development, traces cell-fate transitions in retinal and kidney development, and connects organ-specific gene expression patterns with developmental disease and infection-related vulnerability.

Co-led by the State Key Laboratory of Genome and Multi-omics Technologies at BGI-Research, the research presents a whole-embryo spatial transcriptomic atlas of human organ formation from Carnegie stages 12 to 23, corresponding to four to eight weeks post-conception.

Using Stereo-seq spatial transcriptomics and single-nucleus RNA sequencing generated on DNBSEQ platforms, the team mapped 13 euploid embryos, 77 sagittal sections, and more than 600,000 single nuclei across 50 organs and 198 molecularly defined substructures.

The HGP2 Rare Disease Alliance of the Asia-Pacific Region (HGP2 RaDiAnce-APAC), co-initiated by regional partners across APAC and the BGI Group under the framework of the Human Genome Project II (HGP2), was officially launched in Kuala Lumpur on May 10.

HGP2 RaDiAnce-APAC is designed to strengthen regional collaboration on rare disease diagnosis, research in genomics, capacity building and public health response, while concurrently addressing persistent gaps in diagnostic capacity, uneven access to precision medicine, and fragmented standards and experience-sharing across Asia-Pacific.

The inaugural launch meeting brought together clinical experts, researchers in genomics, and representatives from public health and policy sectors from 10 APAC countries.

Alliance members jointly signed the Joint Declaration of the HGP2 RaDiAnce-APAC Initiative.
