Established in Gstaad in 2005, Patricia Low Contemporary is a Swiss gallery specializing in Contemporary art. The focus is primarily on introducing the most prominent international artists to our audience, with an emphasis on the legacies of Neue Wilde, Contemporary German Painting, Young British Art, Contemporary Photography, Post-Feminism, and Pop. Pivotal artists who have exhibited in the gallery at the height of their careers include André Butzer, Sylvie Fleury, Peter Halley, Axel Hütte, Bjarne Melgaard, Jonathan Meese, Marc Quinn, Anselm Reyle, Katharina Sieverding, Gavin Turk, and Thomas Zipp. In December, 2011, Patricia Low Contemporary expanded by opening a second larger space in St. Both Alpine galleries are centrally located and ideal for viewing cosmopolitan world-class art while providing inspiration to artists, curators, and clients alike. The program has also evolved to include newly emerging positions in contemporary art such as Gabriel Vormstein, Sebastian Hammwöhner, and Nathan Mabry. PLC offers an innovative, diverse, and multi-platformed program of solo and curated group exhibitions running concurrently at each venue. The gallery participates in select international art fairs while also advising on secondary market works by key figures such Damien Hirst, Robert Indiana, Takashi Murakami, and many others. Major artists – including Thomas Zipp and Marilyn Minter – have organized group exhibitions at the gallery, providing insight into their influences, thought processes, and creative networks. Patricia Low Contemporary has a strong commitment to facilitating the artistic process and actively encourages innovative practice. From 2007 to 2009 the gallery ran the Maison Jaune residency program in Gstaad, where invited artists created site-specific work; though the residency is now on hiatus, the chalet location is still used by many of the gallery artists as a studio retreat. From 2009 to 2012 the gallery held operations in Geneva, presenting strong exhibitions from the roster of gallery artists and dynamic group shows such as Pop my Cherry a critically hard-hitting exhibition focusing on the glamour of pop.

Happy Birthday to Anouk Lamm-Anouk (Anouk Lamm Anouk). Anouk has exhibited with Patricia Low Contemporary over the years, and we’re delighted to share the details of the artists’ first solo museum presentation in Austria.

“Anouk Lamm Anouk presents her first solo museum exhibition in Austria at the Francisco Carolinum. Her conceptual practice encompasses painting, sculpture, immersive installations, text-based art and more. In Linz, a selection of her most important bodies of work will be presented, including the extensive painting series post/pre and Le***an Jazz, alongside several installation-based works. New sculptural works have also been created specifically for the exhibition.

Anouk Lamm Anouk’s artistic practice frequently reflects on overlooked aspects of the relationship between humans and animals. Through the study of animal communities, she examines the relationship between the individual and the collective, questioning anthropocentric perspectives and the assumption that humans occupy the centre of the world.

Anouk Lamm Anouk studied painting and sculpture at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2021, she won the prestigious Strabag Art Award. For several years, her work has featured successfully in solo and group exhibitions across the international exhibition circuit.

In Das Feuer (2019), part of Mario Testino’s Meissen series, the photographer turns his attention to one of the most enduring legacies of European porcelain.

At the heart of this history is Johann Joachim Kändler, the celebrated Meissen modeller whose work helped transform porcelain from a precious material into a vehicle for sculptural expression. His figures, celebrated for their movement, theatricality and intricate detail, brought the physical world to life in three dimensions.

Testino approaches these objects from a different perspective. Through photography, he returns Kändler’s sculptures to a two-dimensional plane, yet the precision of his digital C-type prints preserves, and arguably intensifies, their illusion of depth, gloss and texture. The porcelain seems to exist beyond the surface of the photograph, its glazed finish catching the light with an almost tangible intensity.

Through his wider depictions of the four elements in Meissen, Testino captures the porcelain object not simply as a historical artefact or sculpture, but as something that continues to command our attention through his mastery of light, surface and form.

Photographed in Jaipur for Vogue Paris in 2017, Vittoria Ceretti is enveloped almost entirely in shades of soft pink — a palette particularly fitting for Jaipur, famously known as the Pink City.

Layers of fabric envelop the figure, while a translucent veil softens Ceretti’s features, leaving her bare hands in striking relief. The image, photographed by Mario Testino, recalls the great Venetian tradition of the veiled figure, and in particular Antonio Corradini’s Dama velata at Ca’ Rezzonico (just steps from the gallery where this work currently sits). The symmetry and stillness of Ceretti’s pose further heighten the sculptural quality of the image.

In Testino’s current Venice exhibition, the photograph reflects his interest in classical ideals of beauty, proportion and perfection. Another edition of the work is in the collection of the Palais Galliera in Paris.

A few memories from our first PLUS weekend, organised around Mario Testino’s opening in Venice.

PLUS is our by-invitation programme, offering special access to artists, exhibitions and places we want to share.

Our warmest thanks to Eugenio and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo for opening San Giacomo to us; to Elise and Erwin Wurm for arranging our visit to Dreamers at Palazzo Fortuny; to the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore for facilitating our visit to Barry X Ball’s The Shape of Time; and to Dries Van Noten and Patrick Vangheluwe for so warmly welcoming us to their foundation at Palazzo Pisani Moretta.

Mario Testino’s Meissen series, 2019, depicts the celebrated Four Elements — Earth, Water, Fire and Air — conceived by Johann Joachim Kaendler for Meissen in the 1740s and among the most ambitious creations of the great Saxon porcelain manufactory.

Monumental in scale and extraordinarily elaborate, the original vases transform each of the four elements into a complex sculptural composition of figures, animals and mythological references. The four masterpieces belong to the celebrated porcelain collection at the Zwinger in Dresden, assembled by Augustus the Strong, whose passion for porcelain was also instrumental in the establishment of the nearby Meissen manufactory.

Augustus dreamed of creating a true “porcelain palace”, an idea Peter Marino later revisited when he completely reimagined the presentation of the collection at the Zwinger.

Testino photographs each vessel individually, almost as a portrait: Earth against lilac, Water against turquoise blue, Fire against green and Air against pink. The unexpected colours give the eighteenth-century porcelain an entirely contemporary presence while bringing its extraordinary detail and exuberance into focus.

In Venice, the four works resonate particularly with the exhibition’s exploration of Rococo theatricality, beauty and excess.

Growing up watching horse racing with his family, Mario Testino developed an early fascination with horses — their physique, proportions and movement.

In Horses (II), Urtasaray, Uzbekistan, 2023, he photographs an Akhal-Teke, the ancient Central Asian breed celebrated for its refined proportions and extraordinary, almost metallic coat.

Isolated against a dark, painterly background, the horse becomes almost sculptural. The image also recalls the long tradition of equine painting — from the great horse portraits of George Stubbs onwards — in which the animal is not incidental to the picture, but its entire subject: anatomy, character and beauty observed with the attention normally reserved for human portraiture.

Testino’s use of light accentuates the sheen of the coat and the precision of the animal’s form, giving it what the exhibition describes as the “presence and dignity of classical marbles.” Mario-Testino pr 08.09.26.pdf

The work forms part of A Beautiful World, Testino’s ongoing exploration of cultures, traditions, people and the natural world across the globe.

“I wanted to find a way of doing flowers that had the same energy that my fashion pictures had.” - Mario Testino

In the monumental five-part London (2019) and Tokyo (II) (2018–2019) by Mario Testino, the photographer turns his attention directly towards the botanical world. Yet the two works approach it in markedly different ways.

In London, flowers, leaves, berries and branches accumulate across a dark ground in a composition of abundance, texture and changing states of nature.

Tokyo (II) offers a striking counterpoint: individual stems, blossoms and branches occupy a luminous gold field, creating a spare, graphic rhythm across its five panels. In both, something inherently ephemeral is fixed and made monumental through photography.

In 2004 for American Vogue in Los Angeles, Mario Testino photographed Daria Werbowy wearing a scarlet Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche gown beneath a canopy of bougainvillea.

“We grew up with bougainvilleas in Peru. They were the flowers that called my attention the most growing up because of their vibrancy and their lasting power. I found some in the house where we were shooting, so I decided to put Daria in a perfect position with just a little movement in that dress in front of these flowers. Until then I’d only used flowers as a backdrop, never in front.” - Mario Testino on Daria Werbowy, 2026.

Red dominates the photograph. Daria’s elongated silhouette and the flowing fabric of her dress seem almost to disappear into the cascading bougainvillea. The photograph has been exhibited internationally at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MALBA, Buenos Aires; FAAP, São Paulo; and the Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Congratulations to Enrique Martínez Celaya on ‘The Things We Know’, a monumental new curtain artwork commissioned by LA Opera for its 2026/27 season.

Spanning approximately 70 feet, the work will become a recurring part of the experience of LA Opera, welcoming audiences into the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion throughout the season. For Martínez Celaya, whose practice moves between painting, sculpture, installation and writing, the commission brings his longstanding interest in memory, perception and the human experience into a new setting, connecting visual art with the ritual and anticipation of performance.

We exhibited Enrique Martínez Celaya back in April for our Cables of Cobwebs group show in Venice, so we’re thrilled to see this commission come through for the artist. A major new work for a major cultural stage.
