He broke barriers in depicting sacred ceremonial dance and transformation scenes and stories. Indigenous Art of the Day: Sacredness of the Four Seasons, 2025 by Isabel Rorick (Haida). Steeped in generations of weaving traditions (grand daughter of Florence Edenshaw Davidson), Rorick is one of the living masters of the form. Long exhibited in important museum shows and in collections all over the world, she is known widely as the best. This intricately made basket of spruce root and sun bleached grass stems, displays the preciseness of her work. Capped by a rattle in the lid’s bulb handle! An exhilarating piece!

Indigenous Art of the Day: The Raven and the Big Fisherman, 1983 by Bill Reid (Haida). Graphite on paper. We are so honoured to have this original master work by one of the grandfathers of contemporary Northwest Coast art. This is one from a series of 10 Haida myth drawings exhibited in 1983. The 10 drawings and myths were published as “The Raven Steals Light” and later turned into a set of five lithographs. A sight to see!

Indigenous Art of the Day: “Trickster 4: What Me Worry”, 2025 by Randy “The Raven” Babichuk (Nuu-chah-nulth). Painting on board.

Statement: “Alfred E Newman of Mad Magazine (1955 - present) is compared to the Northwest Coast Raven in this painting. Both are tricksters and shape-shifters who challenged societal norms, offer satirical critique, provide cultural reflection, and use humour to convey important messages.”

We welcome Randy the Raven to Mark Loria Gallery. Steeped in a decades long practice in Victoria of graffiti art, street and skateboard culture, comic books, and the punk rock scene, Randy brings a Banksy-like mix of social commentary, humour and contemporary flair - all grounded in his Nuu-chah-nulth indigenous heritage. We are excited to introduce Randy to our community with a special thanks to Aunty Collective on their 2025 exhibition of Randy’s new work.
