Mark your calendars! Fibreworks 2024 is coming soon.

Fibreworks is a biannual exhibition that showcases contemporary Canadian fibre art. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fibreworks, Cambridge Art Galleries has curated two incredible exhibitions.

From August 24 to November 10, come see Next In Fibre: 20th Anniversary of Fibreworks on show at the Queen’s Square Gallery. This exhibition presents works by emerging artists working with fibre as a medium.

From September 7 to December 1, visit the Preston Gallery to view a selection of works from the Cambridge Art Galleries permanent collection of contemporary fibre art acquired through previous Fibreworks exhibitions.

On October 4, celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fibreworks at the Queen’s Square Gallery with a tour of the exhibition and a panel discussion with special guests.

We hope to see you there!

Ever wonder what was on view at Cambridge Art Galleries in the past? 🧐 Take a minute to look back in time and discover Libby Hague’s solo exhibition, Inventing Hope (2015).

In Inventing Hope, Canadian video and print installation artist Libby Hague examines complex social relationships in a precarious and interconnected world. The abstract wall sculptures are punctuated by small gleaming video projections and hanging installations.

Keep an eye out for special Exhibition Archives posts as we count down to Fibreworks 2024!

Thursday, July 11 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Queen’s Square join us in the studio to try out visible mending! ✂️🧵

Local mending enthusiast Elysha will guide you through the basics of garment repair. We’ll talk about buttons, zippers, and darning but the hands-on component will focus on learning basic stitches to create hand-stitched patching techniques. You’ll bring something to mend: anything with a knee, elbow, or other hole is a perfect candidate for a patch.

Participants will bring a garment in need of repair. All other supplies will be provided. All skill levels are welcome including complete beginners to the world of sewing and mending.

The Japanese indigo planted by Hitoko Okada at Cambridge Art Galleries, Idea Exchange are getting bigger! 🌱 If you look closely, you will see buds beginning to grow on some of the plants. In a few weeks, these buds will blossom into little pink flowers.

While the flowers are beautiful, it’s the leaves that are used in the dyeing process. The leaves can be used fresh to create a turquoise dye or fermented for several months to produce a dark blue colour.

Be sure to check out Hitoko Okada’s solo exhibition at Queen’s Square this fall!

On Saturday, July 6 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, join us in the Queen’s Square studio for a Community Quilt Workshop with the Grand River Community Play Project.

There are no rules for creating a square aside from a final size of 10 x 10 inches. Any approach is welcome (sewing, painting, applique, felting, etc.), and we encourage experimentation and creativity. The most important thing is that each square should tell your story or depict your relationship to the river. Rather than a traditional rectangular quilt, each of your squares will be tied together to create the shape of the river and be displayed with a map of the Grand River watershed identifying where each square came from. We will also display a matching “quilt” of your stories about each square.

Go to the Idea Exchange website to register.

Judy Major-Girardin: Shallows is on view at Cambridge Art Galleries, Queen’s Square until August 10!

Through her meticulously crafted artworks, Judy draws attention to wetlands' intricate beauty while addressing the pressing concerns of their loss. Utilizing a diverse range of materials—from translucent fabrics to printed, collaged, and sewn elements—she creates a visual language that speaks volumes about the fragility and resilience of these vital habitats.

This is your last chance to see Mere Phantoms: Undergrowth at Idea Exchange, Preston 🐝🐛 Closing Saturday, June 22.

“Much like stories, memories, hopes, disappointments, joys, and grief that lurk underneath our skin, an entire universe teems with life under our feet in the undergrowth. Invisible at first glance, this world is filled with plants and creatures living in symbiosis and in constant metamorphosis.

What can we learn if we look closely?” - Mere Phantoms

Art is all around us at Idea Exchange! You may recognize this sculpture located outside of the Preston location. 📚️

In 2002, Canadian artist Stephen Cruise was commissioned to create a public art piece for the renovation of Preston. The resulting sculpture, named Stock, consists of seven sandstone structures. Taking inspiration from the seven trees depicted on the original Preston coat of arms, there are seven stacks of books, cut from sandstone, arranged in a pattern loosely based on the path of the Speed River. The placement of the artwork encourages visitors to interact with the sculpture as they enter the library.

Judy Major-Girardin: Shallows is on view at Cambridge Art Galleries, Queen’s Square until August 10!

Shallows is an immersive exploration of wetland habitats. The themes explored in Shallows are as varied as the wetlands themselves. From celebrating biodiversity to the urgent call for conservation, each piece offers a glimpse into the artist’s multifaceted approach to capturing the essence of these environments.

Ever wonder what was on view at Cambridge Art Galleries in the past? ⏳️ Take a minute to look back in time and discover Jeremy Drummond’s solo exhibition, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (2010).

In Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Canadian artist and curator Jeremy Drummond investigates our perceptions of the suburbs. The works in this exhibition take the form of unconventional anthropological studies, in which the artist excavates, sorts, documents, and sometimes manipulates signs of suburbia, as a way to reveal their history and hidden meaning.
