Art Buffet is BACK for a special summer edition! 🌞🎨

Every Wednesday from June 3 to July 29, we gather in the space outside Mitchell Art Gallery in Allard Hall's Main Atrium for self-directed art-making that encourages mental wellness. Drop in any time from 12 - 4 p.m. - materials and encouraging words provided!

What is the Art Buffet?

The Art Buffet is the Mitchell Art Gallery’s own “art hive”, a concept developed over two decades of research by Dr. Janis Timm-Bottos rooted in ideas of art therapy and inclusivity. Since 2023, the Mitchell Art Gallery has hosted Art Buffet as a welcoming space for those who need an inclusive, low-pressure, and community-oriented space to create. Over the years we have met and shared this creative space with many members of the Edmonton community, our neighbours in the Downtown core, and students, staff and faculty from across campus.

So come join us starting next Wednesday, June 3, from 12 - 4 p.m. in the Allard Hall Atrium outside Mitchell Art Gallery. This summer, we will also be unveiling a special collaborative project to celebrate this creative community that we have fostered over the last few years. Watch this space for details!

That's a wrap on our Winter programming! Mitchell Art Gallery will resume exhibition programming in the fall, as we renovate our gallery space over the spring and summer.

Just a few days left to view Layers: MacEwan Design Portfolio Show 2026! Here are some fun moments from Industry Night.

From typography to videography, LAYERS represents the breadth of pathways pursued by MacEwan’s Bachelor of Design students.

Peeling back the LAYERS, we reveal the vast, chaotic, and sometimes polarizing perspectives that define us as designers — and the shared foundation beneath it all. Each of us brings a distinct talent, a creative spirit that shapes what we make today, and what comes next.

Our LAYERS run deep: in the hours spent, the interfaces learned, the colour modes mastered, the community that forms around all of it. There is overlap in how we approach problems, intersectionality in how we see the world, and always more beneath the surface.

Different experiences, different ways of seeing — layered together into something none of us could have made alone.

Reminder: Opening Thursday - LAYERS: MacEwan Design Portfolio Show 2026

Join us in celebrating the opening of LAYERS, the annual MacEwan Design Portfolio Show. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 30 from 5 - 7 p.m. for industry and invited guests, followed by a public reception 7 - 8:30 p.m.

The exhibition showcases work by the 2026 graduating class of the MacEwan Design Program and runs from May 1 - 9 at the Mitchell Art Gallery. Link in bio for details!

Your last chance to view Bowers: Studio Arts BFA 2026 Graduate Exhibition is this Saturday, April 25! Visit us from 12 - 5 p.m.

Tracing the students’ individual, winding artistic journeys through their degrees, Bowers features the work of MacEwan University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts: Studio Arts 2026 graduating students. The exhibition presents slow, contemplative explorations of resistance, care, kinship, and the organic within intersectional embodiments from artists Sakina Badani, Alana Bennett, Bree Bylsma, Anna Fehr, Kyana Gormsen, Ivan Lazaruk, Orisha Neufeld, Stephanie Po***ck, and Daniella Pyne.

Curated by careful hands, the bowers inside this labyrinth offer stories from the center of the self, bound together by community, collaboration, and kinship. Featuring an array of media, including textiles, printmaking, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and installation, Bowers offers a place to rest and critique, celebrate, and question the world we live in.

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! Today we want to turn the spotlight on and thank our wonderful MAG volunteer team!

This year, our volunteers engaged with gallery visitors, facilitate art-making and conversations at Art Buffet, and helped make our events a success. Our Fall team included Autumn, AmberLynn, Ciera, Julianne, CJ, Carolina, Lhiv, George, Jenny, Charlotte, Deanna, Raquel, Savannah, Paige, Francisca, Serge, Mara, Clinton, Tamara, Pari, Simran, Niveen, Mariia, and Pim.

In Winter the crew was joined by Melina, J, Sabra, Tara, Antoinette, Satira, Aliceea, Emmanuel, Tye, and Jesselle. Special thanks to our ArtBus volunteers Aisha, AmberLynn, Andi, Emmanuel, Cam, Ciera, Charlotte, Ella, Fern, Harmanjot, Josie, Kaila, Kari, Maysa, Rigbe, Riya, Serge, Shaula, and Tamara. Thank you volunteers, we couldn't have done it without you!

Did you know, almost all of our volunteers are current students? The MAG focuses on providing volunteer opportunities to students, to offer learning opportunities and to help build work experience. A big thank you to our student volunteers who balance their work and studies with their MAG volunteer duties!

ArtBus 2026 RECAP!

It's been one month since we hosted ArtBus 2026! A big thank you to everyone who joined us for its 3rd iteration. Each year we are blown away by the community showing up to celebrate the vibrant network of art galleries and artist run centers in downtown Edmonton. This year’s ArtBus saw about 50% more gallery visits and 25% more ArtBus ridership than 2025. ArtBus is motivating further engagement with arts and culture downtown too, with 95% of audience survey respondents indicating ArtBus increased their interest in visiting art galleries more in the future.

We are forever grateful to all our ArtBus collaborators, gallery staff, volunteers, artists, curators, and ETS partners who helped make ArtBus possible. We could not have done it without all the hard work and time you’ve invested in the event!
