Two Rivers Gallery proudly sits on the traditional, unceded territory of the Lheidli T’enneh. Operated by the Prince George Regional Art Gallery Association, the Gallery serves the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, which includes the traditional territories of the McLeod Lake Indian Band, Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and Simpcw First Nation. The regional district consists of approximately 1

00,000 people across seven electoral areas and four municipalities, including Prince George with a population of 79,000. Two Rivers Gallery is contracted to provide services to the entire regional district and each year we travel with outreach programs and an exhibition to the District of Mackenzie (two hours to the north), the Village of Valemount (three hours to the east) and the Village of McBride (two hours to the east). The geographical area we serve is 51,083 ㎢ which is just shy of that of Nova Scotia. The name Two Rivers Gallery derives from the confluence of the two main waterways in the region, the Nechako and Fraser Rivers. Two Rivers Gallery is located within the city of Prince George, in Central British Columbia, nine hours north of Vancouver. Prince George, once considered a logging town, is a service centre for the northern half of the province. The next nearest public art gallery of comparable size and scope is five and a half hours away by car, and as a result Two Rivers Gallery is the main venue for experiencing contemporary art for the regional community.

Daniel McCarthy Clifford uses commonplace items to explore the material features of prisons and other institutions of state power based on his previous experience of imprisonment. He describes his works “as entry points into broader conversations about social control, race, class, and sexuality.” Since Clifford’s release, his art has also investigated objects and ideologies that are forbidden in carceral institutions.

Clifford began The Leavenworth Project during his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. This research-intensive project focuses on the history of the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, where many political activists and radical dissenters have been incarcerated, as well as the United States Disciplinary Barracks, a nearby military prison. Using food trays similar to those found in prison, school, and hospital cafeterias, Clifford created memorials to antiwar activists imprisoned during World War I. The artist mailed these trays to the warden of Leavenworth, asking that they be displayed in the prison to honor those previously incarcerated there. His requests were met with silence or the return of the trays. The sculpture One Ton Ježek reconfigures hundreds of stacked trays into an “anti-monument” against militarism, censorship, and the prison-industrial complex.

This work, along with many others, are currently on view at Two Rivers Gallery in Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration – on now ‘til October 6th, 2024.

Tameca Cole began to experiment with collage while incarcerated at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women and Birmingham Women’s Community Based Facility and Community Work Center in Alabama. Since release, she has continued to work in collage and other mixed-media practices to explore the link between penal time and other forms of racialized subjugation and violence against Black people. Her collages combine images from newsprint, books, and photographs as interrogations of the U.S. criminal legal system and the nation’s long history of anti-Black violence. During her imprisonment, Cole participated in Die Jim Crow, a sound arts organization created by New York–based producer and activist Fury Young to address histories of racialized captivity through music and art. She also took art classes through the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project and was mentored the project’s co-founder, Kyes Stevens. “I was constantly trying to reach out and find programs to remind myself that I had self-worth,” she notes.

This work, along with many others, are currently on view at Two Rivers Gallery in Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration – on now ‘til October 6th, 2024.
